Seyeght (Part 7)

LONDON UK, SATURDAY

The Relevant One and the Young Officer walked side by side in the pouring rain on the London Street, exhausted and hungry. They had run from the one thing you could never run from, but they didn’t know that. They thought they were safe in the most dangerous place you could be.

They went in the bakery where they had been working the past two weeks and put on their required uniforms. The bakery was cozy and warmly lit. Not many people were there yet, so they talked to each other in hushed tones about their actions. They had fled from the Organization aimlessly, knowing that if they were caught, they would be sentenced to death. Giving the sIght to a random person was not permitted. You had to be invited, verified, tested… proven that you were worthy to have it. A total of three people in the world had the sIght. One was the Organization’s leader. The second had disappeared years ago. The third could not handle it and was in an asylum.

The two continued discussing, talking in code as they worked throughout the day whether or not there were customers. At the end of the day, fifteen minutes before closing time, the owner went into the back, leaving the Relevant One and the Young Officer cleaning in the front. Two men walked in, dressed completely in black and wearing black bike helmets with tinted visors. The Relevant One asked them to remove their helmets, as it was store policy. The men did not move. The Young Officer froze and stared at the men in horror. The Relevant One pulled out a small taser and pointed it at the Men as they backed up from them. No one spoke as this went on. People passed by and they saw, but they did not see. The Relevant One and the Young Officer backed out the emergency exit and turned and faced the alley as soon as the door was closed. Another Men was standing in front of them when they turned around. The Young Officer cried out as the Relevant One was grabbed by the Men and he attacked it, shooting his pistol at its head. It was flung back by the force of the bullets, but it was not injured or even slowed. It continued dragging the Relevant One to the opening of the alley and the other two Men appeared there. The Young Officer kept shouting and tried to fire, but he had run out of bullets. The Relevant One fought the Men’s grip uselessly and they both fought and screamed. Police sirens wailed in the distance, but it would take too long for them to get there. By then the Relevant One would no longer be Relevant.

She managed to free one arm, and luckily it was the one that held the taser. She hit the Men in the chest and he shook violently before crumpling to the ground. She ran to the Young Officer and they pointed their empty weapons at the Men, their threat as empty as the things in their hands. The Men looked to their left, and walked back the way they came. The Relevant One and the Young Officer stood in shock as police cars drove up. Next thing they knew, they were in handcuffs in the back of a squad car.
