Raat ke Rahi
Chapter 6:
Under the serene light of a full moon, the vibrant city pulsed with life, but for Daya and Shreya, the evening held an air of unresolved tension. Daya had always envisioned this moonlit backdrop as the perfect canvas for a romantic evening with Shreya, filled with laughter and sweet moments. Instead, the dimly lit streets, bathed only in the soft glow of streetlamps, became a stage for unexpressed feelings and simmering frustrations. They had just wrapped up a particularly challenging case, and while Shreya's mood was clouded with anger, Daya found himself wrestling with a storm of emotions of his own.
Daya: (Thinking) Boss ke hisaab se to Shreya ko meri marham paati karni chahiye thi, apna dupatta... (he glanced at her attire) Aaj kal ladkiyaan dupatta pehna hi bhool gayi hain. Kash, wo apne dupatte se mere haath ko sambhal leti, kuch nazre milti, kuch baatein hoti... (apne aap ko shake karte hue) Lekin yahaan kuch nahi hua. Kya hua? Yeh hai ki meri hone wali biwi khud mujhe hospital le ja rahi hain sirf ek choti si marham paati karne ke liye... (whispered) Daya, yeh sab bohot mushkil hone wala hai. Bohot mushkil.
Shreya sat behind the wheel, her expression a complex blend of frustration and determination. She was still stewing in her anger, her focus solely on her responsibilities as a CID officer. Daya stole glances at her, longing to breach the emotional chasm that had opened between them.
Daya: (cleared his troat) Huh... lagta hai is gaadi mein main akela hoon.
Shreya remained fixated on the road, her thoughts seemingly miles away, ignoring his remark.
Daya: Main keh raha hoon ki hospital jaane ki zaroorat nahi hai, Shreya.
Shreya: Chot lagi hai aur jaise Abhijeet sir, Sachin sir, Purvi sab ke kehna sahi hain, mujhe apne senior ka dhyaan rakhna chahiye to...
Daya: (interrupting)To uske liye hospital ki kya zaroorat hai, wo to tum bhi...
Shreya shot him a glare, cutting him off. Daya sighed, feeling the weight of their unresolved conflict. In an attempt to lighten the mood, he fiddled with the car radio but found nothing suitable. Frustrated, he banged the dashboard, eliciting a fleeting glance from Shreya before he hesitantly began to sing.
Daya: Teri tasveer hai nigaahon mein,Door tak roshni hai raahon mein.. (he looks at the moon peeping from window while Shreya glance at him from corner of her eyes)Kal agar na roshni ke kaafile hue....(smiling)Pyar ke hazaar deep hain jale hue.. Dekha ek khwaab to yeh silsile hue... Door tak nigahon mein hain gul khile hue.(he turn his head and glance at Shreya driving) Yeh gila hai aapki nigahon se.Phool bhi ho darmiyaan to faasle hue.
His voice mingled with the soft hum of the engine as he gazed out at the moon peeking through the window..Shreya glanced at him from the corner of her eye, but her attention was soon diverted back to the road.
As they arrived at the clinic, Daya felt a flicker of hope—maybe this would be the moment to reveal his softer side and bridge the gap between them. But as he entered the doctor's room, disappointment washed over him. This was far from the cinematic moment he had envisioned, where Shreya would gently tend to him, her concern enveloping him in warmth. Instead, she sat outside, scrolling through her phone, oblivious to the romantic scene he had imagined.
Daya: (thinking) Kahi main Shreya ko uncomfortable to nahi feel karwa raha hoon, yeh sab mein use zabardasti to nahi kheech raha hoon...
Outside, Shreya occasionally glanced toward the doctor's room, worry etched across her face, despite her stern demeanor. Daya noticed her peeking in for the third time and couldn't help but smirk. Just then, a nurse entered and caught sight of Shreya waiting outside.
Nurse: Aapki wife aapki bohot chinta kar rahi hain, choti choti choton ke liye lekin 3 baar pooch chuki hain ki kahi aapko dard to nahi ho raha, kahi iski koi side effect to nahi rahega... Lagta hai aapse bohot pyaar karti hain.
Daya felt a blush creep onto his cheeks with metion of "wife", a smile spreading across his face as he caught Shreya peering in again. An idea sparked in his mind, filling him with a sense of mischief.
When he exited the doctor's office, Shreya stood up, eyeing his bandaged hand.D aya glanced at her, a playful smile gracing his lips as She rolled her eyes.
Shreya: Chale?
Daya: Ye dawai laani thi, tum le aaogi...
Shreya:Aapki dawai hai, aap jaake le aaiye.
Daya: (lamented dramatically) Senior ki respect hi nahi rahi CID mein, nahi marham paati ki aur ab to khud hi dawai leke aao... Kahan gaye wo din jab meri lambi umar ke liye koi vrat rakhta tha...
Shreya bit her lip, clearly trying to stifle a smile. Just as Daya began to walk away, she called him back, snatching the prescription from his hand before heading to the pharmacy. Meanwhile, Daya stealthily slipped out of the clinic, making his way to their car. As he rolled up another prescription paper and tucked it into the car's silencer, a satisfied smirk graced his face. He looked at the moon and whispered to them.
Daya: Please aaj ki raat ko special bana dena.
When Shreya returned, she found him lounging casually at the reception. With a gesture, she beckoned him to leave, and they stepped out together. Daya struggled to contain his excitement, while Shreya eyed him, her curiosity piqued by his broad smile.
Settling into the driver's seat, Shreya noticed Daya's sudden shift in demeanor as he turned his head away, the lightheartedness fading from his expression while he glanced back.
Shreya: Kya hua Sir, kuch reh gaya hai?
Daya: K..kuch nahi, chalo chalte hain.
He stammered, trying to play it cool while internally wrestling with the weight of his unspoken feelings, his gaze drifting toward the moon that shine brightly overhead.
Shreya: (faintly) Pata nahi kyun itne ajeeb behave karne lage hain.
As they drove on at a distance, the car suddenly sputtered and came to a halt. Daya seized the moment, exclaiming his excitement.
Daya: Yes...
Shreya turned to him while he pretended on getting hurt exaggerated, trying to maintain the façade
Daya: Aahh...!
Shreya: Daya sir kya hua, aap theek ho?
Shreya worry creeping onto her face as she reached out to check on him. Daya reveled in her concern, a warm glow spreading through him as he playfully winced.
Daya couldn't suppress the smile as he brushed a stray hair behind her ear, their eyes locking in a moment that felt suspended in time. Shreya's gaze held a depth of emotion, while Daya's reflected a blend of affection and remorse for past mistakes. In that silent exchange, their hearts beat in unison, weaving an unspoken understanding that transcended words—a tapestry of love, longing, and the hope for a future they both yearned for.
Daya felt a warmth spreading through him as he gently brushed a stray lock of hair behind Shreya's ear. In that fleeting moment, their eyes met, creating a connection that felt like it had suspended time itself. Shreya's gaze was imbued with a profound depth of emotion, while Daya's reflected a poignant mixture of affection and remorse for the mistakes of their shared past. Their silent exchange resonated with an unspoken understanding, weaving a tapestry of love, longing, and a flickering hope for a future that they both desperately yearned for.
As Daya delicately traced his fingers along Shreya's hair, he couldn't help but observe the way her breath quickened, a telltale sign of her own racing heart. She instinctively clenched her hands against his waistcoat as he moved closer, their closeness charged with unfulfilled promises and dreams.
Yet, before this moment could deepen, Shreya abruptly pulled away and stepped out of the car to examine it. Daya leaned back, a sense of sadness settling heavily on his chest. The moment spoke volumes; they were a story waiting to be written, and the fear of losing her loomed large in his mind. As she busied herself inspecting the car, he was reminded of the pain he had caused her. The weight of his failures pressed down on him, and he couldn't help but wonder: would their story ever find its resolution?
As his thoughts spiraled, something glinted in the rearview mirror—a sliver of light catching his attention. Daya's curiosity piqued, he turned back to discover a diary that had slipped from Shreya's bag resting on the back seat. He hesitated for a moment, contemplating whether to return it when he noticed a photo peeking out from the corner. Intrigued, he pulled it out, revealing a picture of himself. Daya's heart swelled as he gazed at Shreya, who was intent on fixing some wires beneath the open bonnet.
Cradling the photo in his hands, he allowed himself a smile, the corners of his lips lifting as he opened the diary. As he read the handwritten lines dedicated to him—words penned during the time he was on a mission—he felt the chasm of distance between them narrow.

To Daya Sir,
Happy New year sir.. Daya sir..
Daya ke liye hai yeh khat, dil se hai humne likha,Mission pe jab aap gaye, humne aapko yaad kiya.Aapka intezaar karte, hum sab rahe udas,Aap bina sab lagta hai, kuch adhura sa yeh aas.
Naye saal ki khushiyon mein, aapki kami mehsoos hui,Abhijeet sir ki muskurahat, aaj ke din chhupi hui.Salunke sir ki chinta, ACP sir ka gham,Freddy aur Pankaj bhi, the udas saare hum.
Dairy mein hai yeh pal, aapke saath ki yaad,Har lafz mein hai chhupi, aapki yaadon ki baat.
Kya karein, kahan jayein, aap ho to sab kuch hai,Kanhaji se dua karte, bas aapki yaadon ka jahan hai.
Aayiye, ek naye safar ki shuruaat karein,Daya sir, aap ho toh khushiyon ki baat karein.
Aapka intezaar hai, yeh dil se kehna hai,Aap ho saath toh hum, har mushkil se ladna hai.
Daya sir, aapke bina humari duniya adhoori hai. Yeh shayari sirf ek chhoti si koshish hai aapko yaad dilane ki ki aap hamesha humare saath hain, chahe aap physically saath na ho. Aapke liye humesha pyaar aur samman!

Lost in her words, he was startled by the sound of the bonnet closing. Daya quickly shut the diary, tucking it into his waistcoat just as Shreya approached him, her earlier words echoing in his mind.
Shreya : Daya sir lagta hain kuch problem hain, Auto lelijiye.
She suggested, her voice filled with concern. He nodded, watching her search for a rickshaw, his mind racing with questions.
Daya : Mujhe laga Shreya mere saath nahi rehna chati lekin agar aise hota to wo ye dairy kabhi nahi likhti.. Nahi Daya iss ladki ko apne zindagi se nahi jaane de sakte, Main Bhagwan mein believe nahi karta lekin Shreya to karti hain to ussi kanhaji ke barose main apni puri jaan lagadunga, jitne baar bhi kyu na haru, wapas koshish zarur karunga aur wo koshish abhi se shuru hogi.
With a sudden rush of determination, he leaned out of the car window and called out to her.
Daya : Main tumhe chod ke nahi jaane wala.
Shreya:(turned towards him)Sir, aap ko chot lagi hain aapka ghar jaake aaram kijiye.
Daya: Shreya.. Mard ko dard nahi hota aur tum bhul rahi ho main Daya hu, tumharaaaa Daya sir.
She stared at him, seemingly caught between worry and exasperation. Then, with a slight smile, she approached the window. Shreya glanced at his injured hand, and without warning, she took hold of it firmly, causing him to wince in pain.
Daya : Ahaa... kya kar rahi ho..
Shreya:(smiked)Dekh rahi thi ki mard ko kitna dard nahi hota...
Daya : Shreya suno, main ek gentleman hoon aur ek CID officer bhi hoon to main tumhe akele nahi chhod sakta.
Shreya : Main bhi CID officer hoon, yaad hain aapko?
Daya locked eyes with her, his voice steady and full of conviction.
Daya:(stared at her) Lekin main tumse pyaar karta hoon, aur main tumhe raat ko sadak par akele nahi chhod sakta chaiye tum kuch bhi kehlo.
As a grin spread across his face, Shreya's heart raced anew. She took a step back, hesitating, but he continued to admire her, recalling their late-night conversations about the moon and those moments shared at the ice cream stall, driving her home after cases filled with laughter and camaraderie.
Patting her heart, Shreya turned back to grab her bag from the car's back seat. But as she started to walk away, Daya felt a pang of urgency. He quickly exited the car, locking it behind him.
Daya : Shreya, ruko..kahan jaa rahi ho
As she continued to walk, he followed, content just to be near her. Their shared silence created an air of hope, igniting a spark within him. Shreya remained quiet, aware of his footsteps softly trailing behind her. It was enough for Daya—these steps felt like the first towards mending the rift between them, a hint of promise blossoming in the space between their hearts.
