Chapter 2

The city never slept. In Hell's Kitchen, night meant more than darkness - it was a prelude to another day full of violence and chaos.

Murdock sat in his office - a small, still unfinished room on the first floor of an old building in Hell's Kitchen. On the desk lay carelessly scattered case files that Foggy had been trying to organize for a week. Through the open window came the sounds of the city - horns, conversations, police signals, the sounds of buildings living their own lives.

Matt held in his hands a cup of coffee, whose aroma was intense but bitter. Every sound at the moment was clear to him, every murmur was a reminder that the city does not sleep, and his duties as Daredevil never end.

Foggy entered the office, holding a bag of sandwiches in his hands.

" Can you smell it, Matt? The smell of fresh coffee and a hot ham roll. Nothing like that to lift the mood!" - he said enthusiastically, sitting down in a chair opposite his friend. " You need to start eating something decent, or you'll collapse in the middle of the trial, and I have no intention of bailing you out in front of the judge."

Matt smiled slightly, but his thoughts were elsewhere.

"Foggy, do you have anything on this Karen Page case?"

Foggy set the bag down on the table and looked at his friend with a mixture of concern and determination.

"Mahoney sent me a report. Karen was at the scene, she was holding a knife, and a man's body was lying next to her. All the evidence points to her, Matt said. But... something is not right here. I haven't known Karen long, but this doesn't look like her style. Do you know what I mean?"

Matt nodded, placing the cup on the desk.

"I know, Foggy. When I talked to her at the station she was honest. She wasn't lying. She is innocent, but someone tried to make it look different. The question is - who?"

Foggy sighed, reaching for his notes.

"Mahoney mentioned something else. The victim is Daniel Fisher an employee of Union Allied - Fisk's company. If this is true, we may have a bigger problem than just defending Karen. Fisk doesn't let his people die for no reason, and certainly not under such circumstances."

" Fisk..." - Matt repeated the name with a bitter taste in his mouth. " If Fisk is involved, that means this is not just a murder. It's a game. The question is who is playing the game."

Building under construction

That same night, all the important leaders met. There was no one on the construction site. The only source of light was a whispering lamp, hung from the ceiling, which cast light on the people present.

The first person was James Wesley, Wilson Fisk's closest advisor. He was calm, precise in his movements, as if every minute of this meeting had been planned in advance. To his left  Nobu, dressed in a traditional red robe, whose embroidered designs glistened in the pale light. Nobu was silent, his presence like a blade hidden in the shadows - inconspicuous but menacing.

Madame Gao, a petite and unassuming elderly woman, held a cup of tea in her hands. Her smile was gentle, almost polite, but everyone knew that her words could carry an unbearable weight.

Leland Owlsley, a financier and cynic, nervously rearranged his pen in his fingers. He was visibly nervous, as if he didn't quite understand why the meeting was taking place under such unpleasant conditions.

The last person was Vladimir Ranskahov, a representative of the Russian syndicate. His face was as hard as a rock, and frustration burned in his eyes. The Russians felt that their position in the arrangement was weakening, which only heightened the tension.

Wesley moved closer. He corrected the cuffs of his elegant suit and looked at those gathered, "Thank you for taking the time for this meeting." - His voice was calm but firm. - "We realize that recent events may have raised some doubts about our cooperation, but Fisk believes it is in the interest of all of us to resolve this situation."

Leland snorted, hiding his phone. "Doubts? That's putting it mildly, Wesley. The Russians are losing ground, Nobu is playing with his secret societies, and Madame Gao's people are dictating prices as if we were their servants. Fisk may want solutions for himself, but he's not the one at risk here."

Madame Gao said something in her language. No one understood anything. Leland turned to Nobu. The Japanese didn't understand what the old lady said either. Vladimir was next to speak.

"Enough talking! Fisk promised us an equal distribution of influence, and now my warehouses are being looted by people in black masks! We lose, and you all sit quietly in your mansions!"

Wesley looked at the Russian coolly "I understand your frustrations, Vladimir, but Fisk assures that the situation will be brought under control. Daredevil is not our only problem. There is a new player in town. Someone who wants to enter our territory and destabilize the system. That's why we are here.

Nobu was another , who joined the conversation "If you're talking about a new player, Wesley, you should know that I've already seen their moves. They are not amateurs. They know us, our structure. I doubt they will act without inside information. "This sentence hung in the air, making everyone look at each other with a slight shadow of suspicion. Wesley tilted his head, analyzing Nobu's words.

"All the more reason for us to act together. Fisk does not tolerate treachery, but he also does not intend to let anyone upset the balance. Therefore, I ask all of you to increase your vigilance. Every movement is to be reported. If we find someone who is cooperating with this new player..."

Madame Gao interrupted Fisk's right hand. She decided to finish the sentence in English.

"...He will be exemplarily punished."

Silence reigned for a while, broken only by the sound of a lamp whirring. Finally, everyone dispersed to their bases. Whoever this new enemy is , he is a danger to everyone.

When the job was done, Murdock was not a lawyer . He was Daredevil - the devil from Hell's Kitchen. Black tailored clothes, a mask covering his eyes and two batons in his hands. He walked on the roofs of buildings with such ease, as if he knew every inch of them. He stopped at the edge of the roof, listening to the sounds of the night.

Screams. Two blocks away, in an abandoned warehouse. One of Fisk's gangsters, Turk Barret, a known arms dealer, was arguing with someone.

- "I told you that you would pay,Turk! Fisk is not happy, and you know what that means!" - the voice belonged to one of the minor players in Fisk's organization, probably just a messenger.

- "I don't care about Fisk!" -  Turk roared  . - "It's my money, my job! I'm not afraid of your threats!"

Matt moved toward the warehouse. When he got close enough to hear the heartbeat, he sensed tension in the air. One of the men was about to draw his gun, but Daredevil acted faster.

He broke into the warehouse through a window, landing gracefully on the concrete floor.

- "There's no need to escalate this," he said calmly, though his voice was cold as steel.

The men looked at him in horror. One of them tried to attack, but Matt dodged the blows with ease. His batons bounced off the hands of the attackers, knocking them out one by one. After a short while, only Turk remained conscious.

"What do you want?" - he asked with a tremor in his voice.

Matt approached him slowly, leaning down to look him straight in the eye.

"Karen Page. I want to know who framed her for Fisher's murder. Tell me."

Turk tried to keep his cool, but felt he had no choice.

"I don't know... But... Fisher was supposed to meet someone new. Someone who wanted to report more dirt on Fisk. That's the only thing I know, I swear!"

Matt stopped for a moment, analyzing his words. Finally, he stood up and turned around, heading for the exit.

"If you're lying, I'll be back."

Turk, though terrified, breathed a sigh of relief as Daredevil disappeared into the darkness.

Murdock decided to return to the apartment where Fisher was found dead. There, according to the report, was Karen Page. Daniel was to meet with someone who would help report more information on Fisk. There, there could have been evidence of Page's innocence.

But there was already someone in the room. A person dressed in a smart navy blue shirt was already rummaging through Fisher's belongings. Murdock sensed an enemy. The figure moved toward him. Matt threw his sticks in his direction. It did nothing. With straight legs he flew and kicked the enemy in the chest. The figure fell to the floor. Murdock approached and began to beat the enemy until he was unconscious. When , finished he called the police, they took the defeated enemy. Murdock himself took the enemy , so that he did not escape. He then left the place , leaving the would-be assassin alone. Before he left the apartment , he took evidence on Fisk. Everyone knew , that Fisk was in prison. This evidence would keep Fisk in jail for longer.

Murdock ran to the courthouse. He intended to drop off the evidence under the building as an anomalous person. He heard the sound of police cars in the distance. The police were on their way to pick up the killer. Matt was close to the building. He perfectly jumped over another building and threw the evidence under the courthouse door in one swift motion. He then disappeared from there unnoticed.

Matt reached his apartment. He took off his mask. He went to his locker , where he kept his equipment. He began to change into normal clothes. He hid his batons , which he took from Fisher's apartment , after tying up the criminal. His entire equipment was stowed away. His phone rang. It was Foggy. Murdock answered the call.

"Matt?" Foggy had a strange voice. He was obviously drunk "Where is brother?"

"At home," Murdock replied. Foggy definitely wanted to persuade to go to the bar "I'm working on a case."

"Come on Matt!" Foggy called out. "Come to me! I don't want to be alone!"

"Tomorrow we have a case in court and you get drunk!" Matt was a little upset. "You know , this is not a joke," he added.

"We will win this. I'll be the first avcot , who won the case in a hangover!" Foggy called out again over the phone. "Come on Matt. Join me! You'll be the second lawyer , who wins the case on a hangover!"

"No thanks Foggy" Murdock refused 'I'll try to get some sleep'.

"Okay. See you tomorrow" Nelson hung up. Murdock lay down on his bed. He ignored the pink neon sign , which glowed outside. Tomorrow, the case for Karen Page's freedom.

The next day Murdock and Nelson were in court. Karen Page was between them. A judge entered the room. They all stood up. Then they sat down again. The judge allowed Matt to start. Murdock decided to give it his all.

The case was won. Karen Page is innocent. All three walked out of the courthouse. At the same time, Daniel Fisher's murderer hung himself in his cell. Murdock ignored the threat , which was at his door. All three decided to go to the office of Nelson & Murdock , to celebrate the victory.

"First thing," Nelson took out the champagne. Matt was pleased with the win. "You have to keep the bottle."

"Oh yes Foggy" Murdock smiled 'Your first victory on a hangover'.

"It won't be long before a mass of customers come to na." Foggy smiled. Karen looked around the place.

"Nice office."

"It'll get better soon." Foggy poured champagne into the first cup "There will be more stuff. Today my brother and his team will drop by here , to do renovations. Then there will be computers , elegant chairs. "

"Where will we get the money for this?" Karen asked

"We?" Murdock quipped.

"Well. You know I have nowhere to go so. Can you hire me?" Karen asked with a smile.

"I don't mind" Matt agreed "Foggy?"

"There are three cups" Foggy pointed to three plastic cups. "Me , Matt and you Karen. Welcome to Nelson & Murdock. Advocados at law."

"Are you guys seriously called that?" Page was puzzled by the name of the law firm.

"No. But me and Matt called ourselves that in college." Foggy handed the woman a champagne cup. "Here's to victory!"

"To victory!" Karen and Matt exclaimed. They quickly drank their drink "Only problem will be with the checks for Karen. You see we don't have much money."

"No problem," Page smiled, "I'll work for free."

"We'll get you a deal" Foggy put down the cup " and the desk. My cousin has this old white desk. My brother will refurbish it."

"I can't wait for the first day" Karen laughed. So are Nelson and Murdock. It's going to be a long happy day.
