10- Something's Missing
Above is a picture of Logan
I sigh as I sit in a never-ending traffic jam on my way to the ]mall.
HONK! HONK!
My eyes widen as I hear the honking coming from behind me. I slowly turn around in my seat and look at the car through my back windshield.
I frown in annoyance. How dare they honk at me? I wasn't the one causing the traffic.
HONK! HONK!
He did not just do that again. If he keeps honking, I will be the one causing the traffic, and he's going to get an ear full.
HONK! HONK!
That's it!
I climb out of my car and slam the door shut and glare at the car. More honks erupt, and I just smirk. If I have to sit in this traffic jam then so does he. And if he's going to honk at me, well then I'm going to give him something to honk about.
More honks sounded, and each one got louder than the last. Finally, on the tenth honk, I calmly walk over towards the car and stand in front of the driver's side window.
I smile and squint my eyes as I tap on the window. As the window rolls down, I instantly gulp. Sitting in the car was one of the most beautiful specimens known to man. I almost melted on the spot.
But then I remembered who I am--a cold, hard savage. But then I also remembered the dare, meaning that I had to be nice about this. "Um hi, excuse me, can you please stop honking?" I said in the best voice I possibly could.
The boy raised his eyebrows and scowled. "What the flipping fuck do you think you're doing? I have places to be!"
Now it was my turn to raise my eyebrows. "Excuse me?" I asked with a threatening glare. He rolled his eyes and gave me an annoyed look. "Oh please, keep rolling your eyes and you might find a brain back there." Oops, just broke a rule of the dare, but this doesn't count because I'm defending myself...in a way.
"Listen, baby. Why don't you give me your number and we can have this argument later when I take you out?" he winked.
He winked.
"Are you seriously hitting on me right now?" I asked, and he nodded with a smirk. "If I wanted to kill myself, I climb your ego and jump down to your IQ."
The boy's jaw dropped, he placed a hand over his heart and pretended to be hurt. "Well, baby girl, I don't think I like your tone. Someone's going to have to fix that," he said with a smirk as he glanced down toward his crotch.
I was so taken aback by his forwardness I almost forgot to reply. "Shut up; no way do I want to be near your peanut-sized tic-tac."
His lips formed an 'O' shape, and he whistled. "You're a tough one, aren't you? I like that. Look, I'm sorry. I didn't mean what I said; you're probably one of the most beautiful girls I've had the pleasure of meeting. So please, give me your number so I can take you out sometime."
I raised an eyebrow. This was an interesting change of events. "How do I know you're not some fuckboy wanting to get some?"
He smirked. Damn, did he look good.
"Guess you're going to have find out, aren't you?"
I'll admit, he's pretty smooth. I hesitate for a second before I fished a pen and sticky note out of my purse and scribbled down my digits. I passed it over, and he smiled as he took it.
"It was nice getting to know you...?"
"Ashley," I responded.
"Ah, I'm Logan. As I was saying, it's been nice getting to know you, baby."
I rolled my eyes, "Whatever, micro-penis."
"Ouch, Ashley." he laughed. "By the way, you're cute when you're mad," he winked as he drove off.
I sighed as I shook my head and climbed back into my car. It was still early in the day, I had already managed to piss off half of the highway and score a hot guy, classic me.
~~~~~~
Some time later, I finally find a parking space and walk into the mall. I walk through the endless paths and walkways and dodge people who are in a rush. It wasn't usually this crowded, something important must be happening today.
As I approach the Apple Store, I mentally slap myself.
How could I forget today was the release of the iPhone Seven? Of course, I come to the mall on the one day where it's crowded most.
A long line snaked around the mall and as I walked I could see that it lead straight towards the front of the store.
I groaned. There was no way I was going to wait in this long line to just get into the store; I didn't even want the new iPhone!
I reluctantly walked towards the back of the line. I might as well wait while I come up with a plan to get ahead.
I had stood for about five minutes before I saw a familiar face in a blue Apple employee shirt.
"Alec!" I shouted, and he whipped his head in my direction. His eyes swept the area until they found me and he smiled. He said something quickly to the customer he was helping and then jogged over to meet me.
"Hey Ash, whatcha doing here?" he asked.
I rolled my eyes and sighed. "Some stupid hacker gave my phone a virus and broke it; I just came to get a new one."
"Man, that sucks," he said with an apologetic expression. Then, his eyes suddenly lightened up, and his expression changed into a bright smile. "I can help you get into the store if you want."
My eyes widened, and I threw my arms around him and jumped up and down, "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I did not want to sit in this line all day."
He laughed awkwardly and took my hand in his. "No problem, I'll just bring you over, and we'll be on your problem in no time."
"Aw, thanks, Alec! You're so sweet," I said, and he blushed a little.
We walked into the store ignoring the loud protests of anger coming from the people waiting in line.
We sit at a secluded table away from everyone else. "What seems to be the problem?" Alec asked me.
I brought out my phone showed him how it wouldn't turn on and some of the edges were singed from the burning. "I got this anonymous text, and after they had been done talking they sent a virus to my phone, and it's been broken since," I responded.
"Okay, I'm going to take it to the back and have the experts look at it. Stay here, and I'll be back quick, got it?" he suggested, and I nodded.
He disappeared behind a set of double doors.
I sighed as I slumped down onto my elbows as I waited. I never realized how much I depended on my phone until I didn't have it anymore, it's kind of pathetic.
I had waited for about five minutes before Alec came back holding something behind his back. "I have good news and bad news," he said with a wink, "Which first?"
I rolled my eyes, "Bad, I guess."
"We can't fix your phone."
"Ugh, dammit. Nothing you can do?"
Nope, sorry," he said, "Ready for the good news?"
"Sure."
He smiled and pulled out a rectangle-shaped, white box with a picture of the iPhone Seven on it. "What do you have there, Alec?" I asked confused.
"I was able to pull some strings, and I got you the new iPhone," he said with a smile as he handed it to me.
"Oh my god Alec!" I exclaimed, "I can't believe you did this for me!"
"You're welcome. All I have to do is work a few extra hours," Alec said.
"Aw, you're so thoughtful," I thanked. "But what about the people who are waiting in line for this?"
He smirked, "Well, they can wait. None of them are you."
I smiled up at him. He was just so kind.
"Um, Ash?"
"Yep?"
"Can you do me a favor, please?" He asked.
"Yeah sure, whatever you need!" I responded.
I was happy to do whatever he wanted; he just gave me a new phone!
"Can you open the box and pick up the phone?"
I frowned at his request, but I shrugged and did it anyway.
As I picked up the phone, I gasped. Under it, there was a message written,
Will you be my girlfriend?
I slowly looked up at him to see him staring hopefully at me.
I placed a hand over my mouth. I did not expect this to happen. I didn't know Alec that well, but he was cute. It would also throw Hunter a curveball...Oh, what the hell.
I looked up at his face; eager to hear my decision. "Do I have an answer?" he asked.
I nodded and smiled, "Yeah, sure!"
His expression changed so quickly I barely had any time to react. In half a second his arms were wrapped tightly around me and my body consumed in a giant bear hug. "You won't regret this, I promise!"
I laughed and hugged him back.
"Okay, I have to get back to work, but I'll see you tomorrow," said and I nodded.
He kissed me on the cheek and rushed off to his next customer leaving me dumbfounded and standing in the middle of the store.
Wow. I have a boyfriend. It felt weird, but it was nice.
I walked out of the store and drove all the way home with a smile on my face.
When I got upstairs, I changed into some sweats and climbed into my bed. I grabbed my computer and opened up my Spotify playlist and smiled when Just The Way You Are came on by Bruno Mars.
Not even twenty seconds passed when I heard a knocking on my window. I rolled my eyes and got up to open it.
Hunter climbed in, but I didn't even really care that he showed up, again, unannounced. I was in a pretty good mood.
"What's got you in such a good mood, Sweetheart?" he asked with a smirk. "I know I'm pretty amazing, but you're never this happy to see me; ready to lose the bet?"
I roll my eyes and shake my head, "It's Alec."
Hunter frowns in confusion, "What do you mean?"
"Um, well, I guess we're dating?"
Hunter's jaw drops and his expression changes. Why would he care?
"Um, what?" He asks again with a concerned look.
"He asked me to be his girlfriend; I said yes," I repeated awkwardly.
"Why on Earth would you say yes?" Hunter demanded.
I winced at the sound of his voice raising. Why does he care so much? Because he's losing the dare? Deal with it!
"Because I like him, and he's sweet and nice to me. That's why." I retorted.
Hunter scowls, "Fine. Night, Ashley." he grunts as he starts to climb out the window.
I think that might be the first time he's called me by my real name. Something must be up. "Hey," I shouted as he was jumping down onto the neighbor's roof, "What's your problem?"
He looked up at me and something flashed in his eyes but quickly went away. "Nothing. Have fun with Alec."
I shocked to hear the bitterness that came with saying his friend's name. I frowned, this isn't the Hunter I know. "Hunter-"
"Stop talking, alright? Just stay away from me." he slammed his window shut and closed the blinds.
"Stay away from me"? What was that all about? Why was he so mad at me? Whatever it's fine. He'll probably be back to pick up lines, sweethearts, and insults by tomorrow morning.
I climb into bed hurt by his harsh words, but I try not to let it affect me. I didn't realize I cared this much about our friendship. The feeling that grew inside of me when he said those things was indescribable. One thing's for sure; it was not a feeling I ever wanted to feel again.
~~~~~~
I walked into school the next day with a smile on my face. I had completely forgotten about my encounter with Hunter last night and focused on finding Alec.
My face visibly lit up when I saw him at the end of the hall. I trotted over, and he smiled when he saw me.
"Hey, Ash," he greeted, and I smiled. His voice was so dreamier than life itself. God, I sounded like such a girl.
Before yesterday, I had never thought about Alec in a romantic way. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that he's the only one who's always been exceptionally friendly to me.
We had chatted for a few more minutes before I spotted Hunter standing little ways away, "Hunter!" I shouted. As he looked up, I waved.
He almost waved back, but then he saw who I was standing with, and his expression quickly turned into a scowl, and he walked away.
I frowned. Hunter really was upset, but what did he have to be so upset about? If anything, I should be the one that's angry!
What bothered me the most was how much this was bothering me. Why did I care so much? Isn't it a good thing that I've finally gotten Hunter off my back?
There's that feeling again. It's this horrible feeling I get in the pit of my stomach. It physically aches. It's the sense that something truly important is missing. And the only way to get rid of this feeling was to find whatever is missing. That thing, believe it or not, is Hunter.
