Acht (The Turning Point)

A/N: This was actually the very first thing that I wrote in the Danveur series. As I said, the whole thing was just a random prose, and it may be difficult to understand what was going on in this chapter but this was just a small summary of what Danveur had become from over the years. He used people for fun, then leave them in a ditch somewhere once he'd have his amusement. Vampires are meant to do that. He will have a drastic character development because of the time lapse (in which I'll fill in in the later chapters). It would soon make sense if you continue reading onward, hahaha.

"What would you like to call this? A peace gathering?" Danveur asks lazily as he rests his hips against the door frame, both hands shoved inside his pockets.

The people inside scowled and averted their attention to the newcomer. They were filthy, their clothes tattered and torn in some places. But Danveur was clean, well clothed, and fresh. His green intoxicating eyes glimmered with sheer arrogance and his lips formed a mischievous smile as he stepped in.

"How pathetic, aren't we? This is what we do the moment we realize we're in deep trouble." He goes on. "We gather around and talk it out. Sometimes we end up with useless outcomes, but nonetheless..."

He eyes a young woman sitting still on a stool by the window. Her white dress shirt dirtied and missing a sleeve. Her red vest was opened halfway and by her side was a crutch. She was frowning, her lips pressed tightly together. Danveur recognizes her as Sera and he made his way towards her in the most flamboyant approach he could muster.

"You went to the war with them?" He asked loudly as if they were the only two present in the little room. He was sneering.

"Need must. I reckon I'd at least participate and show my face at the depressing event." She answered back but her eyes were settled far from Danveur, past his shoulders and form. After a short silence, she added, "You didn't come."

"You say that as if you invited me." He countered back, his eyes narrowing but his smirk was still present. "And look at you, fighting and trying to be a sufferer for a cause."

"And what does it have to do with you?" She snaps but her movements were slow as if she was in deep pain. She inhaled shakily.

Danveur shrugs, then he went out. He disappeared as quickly as he appeared.

"I wanted to marry you," It was a statement, untrue and spoken on the spur of the moment. A short, simple one and Danveur was not expecting any reply in return, nor he was hoping.

"The way you acted upon it wasn't helping. You merely confused me in the past... until now, to be frank. Your actions tend to scream otherwise. I hope you are not offended by me turning you down."

"Worry not, I am apathetic." He said, his poisonous emerald eyes, shimmering in greed and pride, pierced her through her very soul. "But as I have said, wanted, that was before. I now do not wish any connection towards you."

Sera sighed heavily. "Then why are you here with me? Beside me exactly. Breathing the same air I breathe."

Danveur only stared at the punctured holes on her neck. He then slowly climbed out of the bed and stood with his back on her. He was completely naked.

"I recall saying that I needed you countless times already. Not wanting to marry you has nothing to do with me staying with you."

"I could break you into tiny little pieces until you're dust and still, I wouldn't be able to understand a thing about you." Sera murmured, her patience on the edge but she was calm and unruffled.

Danveur didn't bother to say anything else as he proceeded to dress for the day job, one cloth after the other. He was in the middle of knotting his tie when Sera spoke once again.

"What exactly are we?"

He paused, unsure if he should continue what he was doing or ignore the question as if he didn't hear it. In the end, "I daresay I don't know. A one sided relationship, I suppose."

A leech using you for needs.

It was Sera's turn to be silent and Danveur turns to her fully dressed. He waited as he listened to the tick of the grandfather clock somewhere outside the room. When he concluded that she wasn't going to say anything else, he responded with, "Another silent treatment. How apt. Here's the thing, my darling." He takes her chin and planted a soft yet filled with nothingness sort of peck on her forehead. "Other people may be running after me but my eyes are only settled just for you, even if you label me as an encumbrance or a simple acquaintance."

"How sweet," She smiles faintly. "But I'm afraid I'd become too attached and won't be able to let you go."

"Oh, my dear," Danveur smiles slyly. "It's much too late to be afraid of that."

"If you scream, and nobody tells you to shut up, it's either they can't hear you or they're pretending that they can't." Danveur whispers, his lips moving slothfully against Sera's ear.

"I somehow believe that you'd rescue me if ever I will call for you," She replied a bit uncomfortably and uncertained. Danveur chuckles.

"How sure are you that I would be there, hm?" He leaned in some more. "My love is unstable and will fade if not properly attended."

"Then why stay?"

"Because you interest me. If love could silence their demons, love awakens mine."

"I need her," Danveur said, his eyes were slits and his orbs a vicious green. "But the more I say it, the less I believe it."

"And?" They were sitting inside an office, Danveur on the other side of the couch and across him was the city's best soldier, Andrew.

"I have said it numerous times. I think, and I most likely consider, that my feelings for Sera are void and pointless. I ought to move on and find a better one but the urge to stay with her is still as strong as ever."

"I see,"

"But you, you don't believe me, don't you? You think I stayed with her because I am slowly falling for her charms and looks. That I have an intense feeling for Sera that I intentionally try to disregard. You have no qualms in me protecting her until the end."

Andrew was still, his eyes unblinking, but soon he laughed softly and nodded with small incomprehensible glee. "Yes, yes, you had me there!"

"Then I hope the best that what you think is true. She once admitted to me that she couldn't understand me but on the contrary, it is I who couldn't sort her out."

Couldn't sort of what to do to her.

xvii.

They were surrounded with rubble and ruined buildings. The sky was in between gray and blue and from not a far, fire was present. On the ground lay a bloody individual, gasping and choking on her own tears. Beside her was a young man, kneeling on one knee and watching her with disinterest.

"I trust that even you, who went under rough circumstances in life could understand what I did was a noble thing. You could tell the difference between importance and unwarranted exploitation, no?"

There was no answer, just continuous uneven breathing patterns. "I need nothing from you anymore. The fun that I had was becoming a bore." He added.

Still no reply.

Danveur laughed. "Look at me, trying to make a little conversation just after I devoured you. I frequently had to remind myself that I shouldn't finish you. That that is someone else's job."

He stood, dusting off the sand that had collected from his dark khaki pants. "You shouldn't have engaged with a monster, Seraphina." He said before he turned his heel around and left without turning his back. "You shouldn't have." He muttered, a sinister smile forming on his face as a figure blurred passed him and into the dying young woman.
