Chapter 18
The following day, after knowing for certain Danny wasn't waiting on you, you flew to the block before the school and changed in and alleyway and walked the last part. A smile tugged on your lips seeing the three people walking to the entrance. Going into a jog you called out, "Good morning!" The three turned head and while Danny and Tucker smiled at the sight of you, Sam didn't seem as pleased. Slowing into a walk next to Tucker you looked at the others. "How's it going?" you questioned, "did I miss anything in four days?"
"Miss something? You mean besides Dash being an ass and Lancer giving new homework. Not much" Tucker shrugged and took out his phone. "Want me to send you the new assignments?" he questioned. "That would safe me a lot of trouble" you grinned. Tucker tapped on his phone, "And~" he tapped one more time, "Done!" he grinned proudly. "Thanks".
Suddenly you felt a cold sensation run through your body, keeping your mouth shut on reflex, while a misty breath left Danny's mouth. We all looked at him as he scowled. "Seems I'm going to be late" he said and held his bag out. Tucker took the bag, "toilet?" he questioned. "Good excuse" Danny stated before running off to some garbage bins, changing and disappearing.
You continued walking into the school with the others and arrived on time in class. A few minutes later Danny came in with a scowl on his face. When he sat down Sam was the first to speak up. "Something happened?" she asked. You glanced from her to Danny who's scowl deepened. "Only an escaped ghost and a ratting sister" he grimaced. "Escaped? Hope he doesn't come back" Tucker sighed. Sam shot him a pointed glare before looking sympathetic at Danny. "I'm sure she meant well" she said, trying to cheer him up. It only worked the opposite way and before Sam could say another word the teacher came in and demanded silence.
In the next lesson I was sitting alone in class. Danny was called on by Lancer to go to some councillor. He didn't seem to happy about that. When lunch break arrived you met up with the others and walked to the cafeteria. "Dude, you okay?" Tucker asked, seeing as Danny looked even more slumped than when he arrived in the lesson. "I'm fine. I can't believe my sister told that Shrink I'm a loser" he complained. "Are you sure Jazz said that? That doesn't like Jazz to me" Sam questioned.
Your eyes flicked over to the front. 'Speak of the devil' you thought to yourself. You hadn't talked a lot with Jazz over the time that was past. All you knew about her was that she was smart and stuck her nose in other people business. Not really the most fun type to hang out with, especially in your case.
"Hey you guys" everybody looked up surprised finding Jazz in front of us. "What doesn't sound like Jazz to you?" she asked. Danny's scowl immediately deepened, causing Jazz to frown, "Still mad?"
"Wow, you are the smart one" Danny mocked. "Danny, I know you are angry but I'm worried about you. Ever since the accident-" "Jazz, I know you think you're helping and I'm sure when I'm older I'll appreciate it. But right now, I don't" he interjected. "You have to talk to somebody Danny. You barely have any friends" Jazz declared making us all glare at her. "Besides these three" she said, disapproval in her voice. A simmering anger seeded itself within your mind at that comment. At least he has friends which he can trust more than he can trust his family. "And you have absolutely no extracurricular activities!" she reprimanded. "Unless you count ghosts" Tucker retorted. "Shut it" Sam hissed at Tucker. The embers of anger slowly ignited at the ignorance of the ginger girl.
"Well, maybe this is me now, huh!" Danny exclaimed spreading his arms in frustration. He crossed his arms, his scowl back "not everyone is pumped up, full of spirit all the time, you know" growled.
A sudden cold sensation leaving your mouth had your eyes darting around. A feeling of relieve welling up at the knowledge that no one had seen it. Two ghosts and it isn't even the end of lunch!
"Ghost sense? I don't see anything" Danny whispered to himself as he shivered. You were about to take a step to him but Jazz was faster as she put a hand on his back. "Danny? You are shivering" she gushed worriedly. "Leave me alone!" Danny snapped as he ran away. Your emerald eyes following him round a corner of the hall.
"It's worse than I thought" Jazz exclaimed looking at him leave as well. A small boy with spiky blond hair stepped up to the ginger and pointed behind her. "A freakishly large hornet!" he shouted and screamed as he ran as fast as his little legs could carry him. Jazz turned on her heel and gasped at the sight of the gigantic green hornet. As he came close she screamed, its mouth opened and a slimy tongue licked over her face.
While Sam and Tucker looked on in panic you felt something was off. This ghost didn't go for an immediate kill. "Back off ghost bug!" Danny phantom snapped as he dropped kicked it through the wall, turning intangible to leave on ruin in its wake. "Ghost bug? That was a ghost? That were two ghosts?" Jazz stared dumbfounded at the wall. Jazz ran off leaving us three alone. I turned to the others. "Don't you think something was weird with that ghost?" you questioned. "Like what?" Tucker questioned confused. Sam narrowed her eyes but you ignored that. "It didn't go for an immediate attack. It just scared Jazz" you explained. "Isn't that what ghost do?" Sam asked as if it was obvious. You rolled your eyes, "remember Skulker? Going for immediate kill? The lunchlady, immediate meat rain" you summed. "What's your point? That it just came here for fun?" Sam retorted. "I'm just saying it's weird okay" you glared, which Sam returned. Tucker looked between the two of you and waved his hands, breaking the glare. "Uh guys, lunch is about to be over" he remarked. We both stopped glaring and huffed. "Let's go ea-" Sam was interrupted as the bell rung and we all scowled, walking to the next lesson.
The following day you met up with Tucker and Sam, while Danny was handling some ghost god knows where. What wasn't expected was Jazz cornering you and the other two. "Don't you think Danny has been acting weird? I mean, haven't you noticed how gloomy and negative he's been lately?" she questioned, honest concern in her eyes. However, it triggered no kind of sympathy from you. "Uh Jazz? We are Danny's friends. That means we keep his secrets, from you" Tucker said matter-of-factly. Jazz rummaged in her small pink back and pulled out twenty bucks, handing it to Tucker who took it with a smile. "Although-" Sam interrupted him by snatching the money, "we've all got our problems Jazz" she said, handing the money back, "I know you're worried. But Danny is okay" she smiled innocently. She turned to me and I gave her an innocent smile. "And even if he wasn't, we would help him" you shrugged, gaining an elbow in the side from Sam who deemed that unnecessary information. "He may keep things to himself but it's not like he is a criminal" Sam smiled.
A movement behind Jazz caught your eye and your smile turned into a frown as a green hand appeared from the wall and hooked Danny's backpack to the fire alarm lever. Before you could even step in to warn him he stood up and walked off causing the fire alarm and the sprinklers to go on.
A sigh escaped your lips as everyone was wet and shooed out of the building. It didn't take long for Lancer to find the guilty one, with the help of tattle tale Dash.
"A month detention?" Danny exclaimed indignantly, "but I didn't do anything!" Jazz, Tucker and Sam all glared at him like a bunch of wet cats. You on the other hand glanced around, wondering if the ghost was close to see his result.
"Hey, mister Lancer, it was an accident" a woman with a red and oddly shaped hair-do, green eyes and sunglasses stepped in between Lancer and Danny. Now turning to Danny with a smile that seemed ominous to you she spoke, "but we are going to take that accident and make it an acci-don't, and learn from it so it never happens again". Danny's eyes widened "But-" "No buts. You could learn a little bit about school spirit from miss Spectra here. When I was in school I received the same advice" he intercepted. Spectra grinned at the comment of Lancer. "And look how I turned out!" he cheered jumping in the air, wanting to seem like a cool cheerleader but only ended up looking like an old man not acting his age. We all looked sceptically at the old teacher.
When everyone was getting themselves dry clothes and Spectra had made an appointment with Danny in half an hour you pulled Danny to the side of the school building. He looked confused as to why you did so but soon scowled. "Don't tell me you are going to scold me as well". You arched a brow, "Danny, you should know I don't care about the rules" you retorted. Danny flinched, eyes widened before he looked down and rubbed the back of his neck. "Sorry (y/n), everything just has me on edge. I honestly didn't pull the alarm but even Sam and Tucker don't seem to believe me" he sighed. "I believe you" you declared making him look up in surprise. "I saw something hook your backpack to the fire alarm. It frustrates me that I can't vouch for you because it is probably a ghost" you growled. "It's already a relieve that at least someone believes me" Danny gave a small smile looking down on you. Taking a good look at him, you take notice of some things. Like how the spark in his eyes were dimmed, dark circles were under his eyes and his posture revealed his fatigue. "I would believe you even if I hadn't seen anything though" you huffed and gave a knowing grin, "you would do the same for me".
That had him smiling while he gave a nod. "Of course" he murmured and leaned forward, his forehead resting on yours while his eyes closed. "Can I stay like this for a bit?" he asked. "Sure" you chided and ruffled his hair. "Take your time and collect yourself before seeing that witch like woman" you chuckled. He smiled at the remark but kept his eyes closed.
After ten minutes he pulled back and stretched before looking you over. "Shall I-" you spread your arms "If you would be so kind" you grinned. He returned the expression and put his hands on your shoulders, turning you intangible. The water from the sprinklers dropped to the ground and you turned back. "Thanks" you smiled. "No problem, Sam and Tucker probably didn't realize I could help them as well....." he muttered glancing to the right where the entrance of the school was. "They will be fine" you said and once again ruffled through Danny's raven hair. "Good luck with the shrew". "Thanks" he scowled at the thought of her, "I'll need it" he said and walked off.
After the last lesson, you had on your own since Danny had counceling, you joined the gang at the Nasty burger. There you ordered a ice cone with strawberry and white chocolate, before sitting down with the others. "Hey. What's the sour face for?" you questioned looking at Danny's scowl. "It was brutal (y/n). The councillor lady made Danny wear a stupid baby suit. I could hardly watch! Though I did take some good digital picks" he grins holding up his phone. You looked at the screen and frowned as it was Danny with a top hat, a diaper and a lint with spirit on his torso. In the left side of the screen there were girls laughing at him. Danny wore the same disheartening expression as he was wearing now. Your eyebrows creased into a frown. "Why would a councillor pull such an evil stunt" you growled, annoyed with the fact that even adults were on the same level as Dash.
Danny scowled at the picture, "hey! Who's side are you on anyway?" he ventured glaring at Tucker. "Danny, come on. You know he's kidding" Sam retorted. Danny's eyes widened before he dropped it in his arms. "Yeah I know" he murmured, "I don't get it!" he glanced up from the table, "why am I so depressed and angry all the time!" he said raising up and glaring at his hands, "that shrink was supposed to be helping me. Ever since I started talking to her, I've been feeling worse".
Before you could share some of your suspicion that something fishy was going on, related to ghosts, Jazz walked up to the table with her annoyingly cheerful expression. 'I think Danny's irritation is rubbing off on me' you thought to yourself.
You licked your ice cream as Jazz started. "Hey Danny, how is it going?" "Like you care. Just go away Jazz" Danny responded as he propped up his hand and leaned his head tiredly on it. A shudder went over you spine and it wasn't because of a brain freeze. You saw Danny look up as well and immediately turned to Paulina who was fussing on her make-up. It seems the others didn't notice the ghost appearing behind the Latina girl. "Gotta keep Jazz busy" Danny whispered to himself and suddenly stood up, making everyone look up at him. "Yeah? Well if you are going to take her side then you hang with her too!" he exclaimed and pulled Jazz in his seat. "There. Take my seat. You have already taken my friends" he said melodramatic. You rolled your eyes as his acting wasn't any better than the worst acting video clips online. As he turned on his heel and ran away, probably out of sight to change, Jazz stood up "Danny wait!" she yelled and ran after him.
Sam's eyes glared as Jazz leaped out of her seat. "Come on!" she demanded and the three of us ran after her. Tucker and Sam left their ice cream but you was still happily licking the sweet frozen treat.
You hadn't realized when you overtook Jazz but you, Tucker and Sam stood in the alleyway, seeing as Danny changed into his ghost self and flew off. 'He really should check his surroundings, what if we were J-' your thoughts were finished as Jazz opened the side door and called out Danny's name in shock.
She turned to us. You could already hear the heartbeat speeding up in both Sam and Tucker, you on the other hand remained calm and began biting the cookie cone. "Did you just see that?" Jazz asked as if she didn't believe her own eyes, "tell me I didn't see what I just saw". "It's not what you think Jazz" Tucker stammers but is interrupted as Sam pushed his ice cream in his mouth. You hadn't realized you weren't the only gluttony today, deeming the ice cream more important than stopping Jazz. "Of course it's not. Ghosts aren't real. Jazz, you sound like your father" Sam interjected calmly with a knowing look.
That take you back a bit, it wasn't often that either Sam or Tucker pulled of a lie. Jazz's eyes narrowed in thought, doubt clear in her eyes. But it didn't take long for her to laugh nervously. "Oh. Oh yeah, of course. My parents are such loons its rubbing off! Oh my gosh, is it that late? I've got to work on my spirit week speech" she announced before running off.
She was nervous. Sam hadn't pulled the lie off and Jazz was piecing the pieces together. Somehow it didn't seem too bad though. She looks like the type who would accept her little brother, whatever he is. Like how Luciel was the only one to accept you without any ulterior motives. Tucker and Sam however, didn't seem to take note of her nervosity and sighed in relieve when she was gone. "That was close" Tucker said as he got out his phone and looked at whatever he was looking at. "No joke" Sam retorted, "no thanks to you". "I did my best!" Tucker retorted. You finished the last bite of the cone and sighed. "She realises something is up" you declared making them both look up with anxious looks. "Why do you think so?" Tucker questioned. "Her body language said so" you shrugged, making Sam look in suspicion at you. "Sure. Let's see how Danny is holding up" Sam states before running off to find Danny. Tucker looked between you and Sam with a worried look. He wasn't the smartest but he knew something was up between the two of you. That did not stop you to wave him off with a smile. "I'll see you guys later" you said, signalling the fact that you were going home. "Later" Tucker waved as he ran after Sam.
