CHAPTER 2| ASSUMPTIONS
•
PEOPLE SAY IGNORANCE IS BLISS. BUT WHAT IF THAT BLISS IS ANOTHERS HELL?
•
IT WAS FINALLY LUNCH, AND I WAS SURPRISINGLY HUNGRY. I slid my book bag into my locker closing it, my brother leaning against the neighboring lockers as he smirked towards girls passing in the halls.
"Can you stop." I signed, irritated.
"Why stop, the girls love it." He chuckled and I made a fake throw up noise. "Oh come on, Jude." He put his arm over my shoulder with a smile, making our way into the cafeteria.
"I hope their food is good, unlike our last school we stayed at." Nicholas nodded in agreement.
"Let's hope." We grabbed trays sliding them onto the medal beams that acted like a line for the trays.
Nicholas explained to them that I was mute, so I just had to point at what I wanted. Though it seemed like the lunch ladies felt bad and gave me more potatoes and corn than the rest of the students.
We found a table that was empty by the windows, whispers ensued as we sat down, our sister not too far behind.
"Hey!" Nancy yelled out as she sped up and sat her tray on the opposite side of Harvey, me sitting at the end seat. "How was your guys's classes?" She sat down adjusting her blouse as she folded her arms talking inward.
Harvey shrugged, "I didn't really pay attention, so good." He smiled cockily. Nancy rolled her eyes then looked at me softly.
"And yours?"
I shrugged. "I met two boys that helped me answer stuff in history class, no one here knows how to do sign language." My hands lingered on the last two words. I already knew what Harvey was going to say.
"You could just try talking, Jude." Nancy's vein ticked on the side of her jaw— he was pushing it— not with me as I didn't care— but with Nancy. Nancy wasn't good with emotions, even though she was the nicest to me— she despised our brother in many ways than one, for what reason? I could not tell you.
"Stop being insensitive! She has her reasons for not talking, jerk face." He shrugged, tugging open his carton of milk.
The bickering went back and forth as I picked at my food here and there, the familiar blonde jock and a pretty little ginger girl stopped at our table.
The ginger looked at me then my sister— but when her eyes met Harvey's he just glared at her. "Oh! It seems we have unwelcome guests at our table, Jackson." She plastered a sly smirk onto her face.
Jackson rolled his eyes walking to the other side of the end table slamming his trey down, Stiles, Allison and Scott followed as well sitting on each side of Jackson.
Stiles looked at my brother briefly before he too got my brother's wrath and simply flicked his head down towards his tray of food.
If I could talk right now I'd ask what the hell was going on, why is my brother so angry— and why is this ginger vixen being a twat?
"I'm sorry, who are you?" Nancy flicked her gaze to Jackson, then Allison with a snarky scoff.
Okay great we're doing this now.
"This is our table. We hardly like Stiles and Scott sitting here and now new trailer trash is sitting here. We've gotten to our lowest point." Jackson hissed and I clenched my fists. My sister shot up out of her seat— I grabbed her hand, shaking my head. "Oh, and I hear little Judith here can't talk. How tragic." He scoffed taking a bite of his food glaring at my sister.
He's read our files. Or more precisely— Harvey's.
Our parents put a fake address on our files due to...privacy. And thank god she did— but now she's fucking us over greatly. We weren't trailer trash seeing as we had the second largest house in Beacon Hills. But, that wasn't Jackson's business. Nor the dumb ginger's.
I want to scream. I want to speak. This whole situation is horrible— and embarrassing. I sighed as Nancy's fists balled to the point I seen red trickle down to her pant leg. I cleared my throat, looking to my brother for help.
"Nancy. Sit. Down." He ordered. She sat back down, opening her water bottle as water slightly escaped her mouth trickling down the sides of her jaw.
"We're not moving. If you have an issue with that solve it like a man, Jackson." Harvey scooped a pile of corn into his mouth before swallowing it. Adverting his gaze to the ginger. "And stop protecting the girlfriend that obviously flirts with anything that moves— I was simply complying with a woman who knew what she wanted."
I groaned, sliding two fingers to the bridge of my nose.
Update: Harvey fucked us over more than mom did.
Nancy was livid. Pissed even.
Jackson wasn't even as mad as her. "Shut—" Nancy stood up before Jackson could finish his sentence, grabbing our brother by the fabric of his shirt— hauling him out of the cafeteria.
And there we are. Me sitting alone with three people who didn't seem to like me or my family already, and two idiots I had history with.
"Whys she still here? Is she deaf too?" Allison slapped his shoulder shaking his head, her face disgusted.
"Why are you always so rude!" She stood up taking her tray with her, sitting down in Harvey's spot.
I glared at her before finally biting into my food. "I'm..." I faltered. That word alone was the first things I've said in 11 years. Allison knew that well. She flicked her eyes to Scott and Stiles whose mouths were also open.
God this is embarrassing. "I'm not deaf." I signed. Pushing my chair back into the neighboring tables— and storming out of the cafeteria. I looked around the halls for my siblings before I seen two people clenching each others shirts.
Nancy.
I ran over to them pulling the apart with as much strength as I could. Yes, Harvey was a big dude, but Nancy was stronger. Especially in hand to hand. She'd kill him.
I huffed as they still tried to pull and push each other with me between them. Someone grabbed my sister's arm pulling her away. Scott.
"I'm sorry for interfering but our school will expel you if you continue.. at least fight at home...okay?" He smiled softly and my sisters gaze ran over his body, his body type, and among other things. She was profiling him like a fucking robot.
"I'm sorry." She spat. Fixing her pastel pink blouse over her jeans. "I got overwhelmed." She shot harvey a look and Harvey shrugged.
"It's fine. I don't think I'm the one you should be apologizing to...is he okay?" Harvey jokingly put a hand over his heart in a romantic comedic way.
"Aw someone does care about me!" I elbowed him the ribs and he hissed in pain.
"Thank you, Scott." I signed. He nodded before nervously scratching the back of his neck.
"It's fine, really. I actually was sent by Allison to ask you guys a question...do you maybe want to come bowling tonight?" Harvey shot a glance to me and Nancy. We needed to figure out what happened to the idiots locker anyways so...it was a start.
"Yes. That would be great." Nancy smiled and he nodded an anxious Scott smile.
"Okay, see you guys at six. Oh by the way it's bowling so— I hope you like bowling."
"Oh we love bowling." Harvey smirked.
God help us all.
