Chapter 11
It's my first day at school as Callie, and I cannot feel my face because I am so nervous. Actually that might be because my facial nerves were numbed, thanks to the plastic surgery.
Jemma curls my dark brown tresses, preparing me for my grand debut. I should have come up with a better cover story, but I'm just making up stuff as I go. I had actually changed my legal name to Callie, so there was no risk of the teachers calling me Kim Jae Eun. I shuddered as I remembered my past self. So clueless about life, so ill prepared for heartbreak. I vow to do better.
"Uh K-Callie?" Asks Jemma, her reflection looking nervous. "Why are you smiling like the grinch?"
"Um... no particular reason at all."
When she's done with my hair, she works on my makeup as I run my delicate hands over the floral sundress Jemma lent me. Simple, yet stunning, hopefully good enough for the Wesley (bed) Wetter.
"All done," says Jemma proudly, surveying her handiwork. Resisting the urge to kiss my reflection, I grab my backpack and follow Jemma out the door.
As my eyes adjust to the sunlight, I became aware of a sharp squealing noise, much like the noise Kim used to make when she saw a Panda Express. Jemma had her hand clamped over her mouth while gesturing wildly at Luka, who was mowing his lawn.
"Look! It's Luka!"
"Very good, and you are Jemma."
She sticks her tongue out at me as Luka turns around to wave at us. His eyes settle on me, and he releases the lawnmower, which speeds towards the house. The sound of glass breaking made all of us wince. Luka screamed and ran towards the wayward lawnmower, as Jemma and I fought back laughter.
A few minutes later, he joined the three of us with his backpack, sporting several new bruises and grass stains.
"Hi," he says shyly to me.
Why was he acting like this? We've known each other our whole lives?
"Hey Luka, this is Callie, Kim's cousin."
Oh so that's why he was acting like more of a spaz than usual.
His eyes perked up. "How is Kim? I've tried to contact her but her parents said she didn't have service in Korea."
I lowered my eyes, because I was new to this whole lying thing. "She's fine, she goes to school in Korea now."
Luka's face fell. "Well can you tell her that Luka really misses her? Tell her that he lost his best friend, and would love to see her again someday."
"I'll tell her that, but she's going to take a long time to recover from what they did to her."
Luka's hands clench into fists. "Fucking Dillon. I haven't talked to him since then, not that I ever talked to him much. If it helps, tell her that I gave him explosive diarrhea by spiking his protein shakes with eye drops."
I snorted. That factoid actually made me feel a lot better. Good old Luka, a true homie.

School was....dare I say...fun? Life as Callie was exactly what I have always wanted. People were curious about me, and cared about what I had to say. Everywhere I went, I felt like people already knew who I was. I spent all day filling in my classmates with who I was: half Korean celebrity, Kim's cousin, aspiring llama whisperer, and trying to see how normal teens live.
Mrs. Myers made me stand up in front of the class and tell them about myself, and I felt completely comfortable with it. Everyone looked engaged, and actually asked me questions about Korea which I mostly bs-ed since no one could prove otherwise.
I was too busy reapplying my lipstick during passing period, so I forgot to go to Spanish. When the bell rang, I let out an inhuman screech and rushed out of the bathroom, nearly tripping and falling into a bush of hideous berries that I swear every American school has.
Running as fast as my long thin legs could carry me, I sprinted across the lawn. And that's when I saw him. Wearing a grey and black color block sweater paired with blue jeans and vans, with his shiny brown locks blowing perfectly in the breeze, Dillon Austin Colt was sauntering across the path, seemingly unaware of what was about to enter his life. I hid behind a wall, observing the majestic Beddicus Wetticus in its natural habitat.
He was looking from side to side, carefully stuffing something in his backpack. He looked at the hallway one last time, and leaned against a column. Slowly, I inched forward and crept behind the column, out of sight but close enough to smell his cologne. I heard him speak on his phone;
"This is Maverick to Mitochrondria69, do you hear me?"
"Wtf," I thought, but kept listening.
"Ok so I got the goods, meet me behind the band room at lunch. And DO NOT pay me in protein shakes.... that shit is nasty. Maverick out."
I was about to slip away silently when I tripped and faceplanted into a plant. Fudgesicles.
Dillon jumped, his blue eyes wide with terror.
"What are you doing here? Whoever you are?"
Spitting a leaf out, I was preparing my previously rehearsed speech when I see the vice principal, who strides towards us like an angry bull.
Dillon grabs my wrist and runs down the hallway, pulling me along with his surprisingly strong grip.
"Where are we going?" I yell.
"I don't know!" He yells back.
"Why are we running?"
"Force of habit!"
Our feet were no match for the school golf cart, and Vice Principal Leonard catches up to us, a devious smile on her otherwise pretty face.
"Ditching class, are we?"
"No actually, we weren't." Says Dillon confidently.
"Oh yeah? Then what exactly were you two doing out of class" Asks VP LeoMcShizzle.
Dillon nods. "You tell her...uh....new girl."
"He was showing me around," I say immediately. "I wanted to know where room 160 was."
The Vice Principal smiles again. "Well then, I think I will show you room 6 in the office. It's where we have detention, quite a big hit among the young crowd these days. 3 pm- both of you. Be there. NOW GET TO CLASS!," she adds, screaming through her bullhorn, her only companion.
Dillon grins at me. "Looks like it's a date. I'm Dillon by the way."
"Callie," I say after I remember the concept of words again.
Dillon walks me to Spanish, while I fill him in on the backstory. His eyes darken at the mention of Kim. Careful not to arouse suspicion, I pretended like I didn't notice. When we get to class, he winks at me before sitting at his seat.
