Chapter One
Memories flash through my mind, thoughts of how life was before they came and took over. My mind wanders, passing from one memory to another before stopping on one - my family, more specifically, my wife. Her name was Lindsey Way, formerly known as Lindsey Ballato. She was a goddess on Earth; there were absolutely no words to describe her beauty. I'm actually surprised she decided to marry me, a recovering alcoholic and someone who had too many anxiety attacks to count and was depressed at times. I still think she's too good for me; she was perfect and even gave birth to a daughter that was just as good as her, Bandit Lee Way, but she was taken from me, just like Lindsey. I feel tears begin to prick my eyes and a sharp stabbing pain appears in my chest. I shove away the memories from the time when I used to be Gerard and return to reality, return to being who I am now - Party Poison, a Killjoy.
I get up from where I lay on the floor and pick up the shirt that lies beside me on the floor, before heading into the makeshift bathroom the other Killjoys had made a while back. I change into my clothes, pulling my black and red shirt up and over my head, pulling it down to cover my torso and the bandages that are there.
I already wear my dusty jeans and shoes; you never know when we'll have to get up and move all of a sudden. It would be awkward to have to run semi-nude through the streets, even if they are abandoned. Running without a shirt would be decent; I could always put it on while I run, that is if I don't have to shoot at some Dracs on the way.
I turn the tap on from the sink, internally grateful for the running water, cupping the cold water into my hands and splashing it onto my face in order to wake me up. I still feel drowsy so I dunk my whole head under the water, allowing it to drench my fire truck red hair. I turn the tap off and shake my head in order to dry myself off a bit and remove some of the water from my hair. I flip my hair back, causing water droplets to fall on my shirt. I take a look at my appearance in the broken mirror that hangs above the sink, emotionless hazel eyes with dark spots underneath them staring back at me.
I leave the bathroom, heading into what used to be the sitting area of the diner, passing by the room I had slept in. My jacket, mask, and bandanna rest on top of the diner counter along with the rest of the guy's belongings. I walk further into the room towards one of the old booths near the back where the gang sits at, eating the canned food that is to be our breakfast.
I plop down in the old red booth after Jet Star slides out to let me in and grab one of the cans that lay on the table, most likely power pup since it's the cheapest and easiest thing to get your hands on. Fun Ghoul and Kobra Kid sit across from Jet and me, already digging into their cans of food. Using my fork, I scoop out some of the food and shove it into my mouth, chewing quickly so that I can swallow it and get rid of the taste as fast as possible. No matter how you served it or what ingredients you mixed in, it never tasted remotely decent.
We eat in silence, occasionally speaking to crack a joke or say something. We finish eating a few minutes later and throw our cans into a bag. We reuse the cans always; you never know when we might need them.
I head into one of the smaller rooms towards the end of the hallway while the rest of the guys get their things ready. I open the door and walk inside, careful not to disturb any objects in the room. Light filters in through the wooden planks covering the broken window, allowing me to see the girl lying in bed. I cross the room and sit on the bed, watching her sleep. They say people look more peaceful when they are sleeping, and it's true. She looks relaxed and calm. If I could give her moments like these all the time, then I would, no matter the cost.
Missile Kid stirs a bit in her sleep before opening her eyes. Even in the dim light I can see the shocking clearness of her irises. I give her a smile. "Ready to go kid?"
She nods her head and sits up in bed, throwing the covers off of her to reveal she is fully dressed minus her helmet. I grab her helmet from a nearby chair and hand it to her. She takes it from my hands, giving me a smile. It's been like this for the past few years. The guys and I wake up and eat breakfast and get ready to leave afterwards while I go and wake Missile Kid. She's always fully clothed minus her helmet, which I give to her. She takes it and gives me smile, never saying a word. The location always changes, but the actions are always the same.
Missile Kid swings her legs off of the bed and grabs my hand, pulling me behind her and into the garage where the other guys are at. She drops my hand and hops onto the bench lining one side of the wall, allowing me to finish getting ready. I tie my bandana around my face and slip on my mask. I grab my gun from the table as well, shoving it into my side holster.
I look up and see Missile Kid standing with Ghoul, helping him finish getting ready. I crack a smile and walk to where they stand before ruffling Missile's hair. She looks up at me and gives me a smile which I return. I look up and face the rest of the guys, my family. "Ready to hit the red line and upthrust the volume out here?"
The guys give me a knowing smile and we hop into the Trans-Am; Fun Ghoul and Jet Star in the back, me, Kobra Kid, and Missile Kid in the front. Dr. D's voice sounds out from the Trans-Am's radio, blasting into the air. "For all you killjoys heading out on the streets, we've got company rolling around. Keep a lookout for Dracs, and remember, a ghosted Drac is a good Drac. Stay safe, Killjoys."
Music begins to pump out from the radio, riffs that are so familiar to both me and the guys, we could play them in our sleep. Usually I prefer listening to songs that don't remind me of the past, but today's different. Today is going to be a good day, I can feel it. Kobra Kid reaches over to change the station but my hand stops him. He asks me an unspoken question to which I respond. "Not today. Today we ride, hard and fast. No stopping and no turning back. I'm in a good mood today, and it's gonna be worth it."
Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na. Drugs, gimme drugs, gimme drugs, I don't need it, but I'll sell what you got take the cash and I'll keep it...
