49. Lucas

After he's finished with work, Lucas heads up to Ammunition Flash's apartment. Nervousness fills him, but excitement, too.

Earlier, Lucas encountered Ammunition in the hallway. The leader of the hideout had looked so exhausted and confused, Lucas had felt bad for him. Ammunition Flash had told Lucas to come to his apartment later, and he would give him his Killjoy name.

Lucas doesn't feel like he'd done that great of a job on the mission. All he'd done was make sure Helena got out; he hadn't even fired his weapon. And to make matters worse, Bulletproof Girl hadn't even made it.

Though he hadn't known her very well, Lucas felt Bulletproof's loss. She'd been on his own rescue mission, and had shown him around the hideout. He missed her friendliness and guidance.

Lucas knocks on the door to Ammunition Flash's apartment, and hears a weary voice coming from inside. "It's open." Lucas enters the apartment.

Inside, it's dark, and Lucas blinks a few times to adjust his eyes. The only light is coming from a lamp sitting on a desk. Ammunition Flash sits at the desk, in his new chair, which Lucas delivered earlier.

Ammunition himself is writing something on a piece of paper, but when Lucas enters he crumples it up. "Hey, Johnny."

Lucas wonders if anyone will call him Johnny once he's been given his name. He approaches Ammunition Flash. "Hi."

"Are you ready for your name?" Ammunition asks, looking up at him from the chair. He seems even wearier than before, if possible. His hair is messy and greasy, and his eyes area bit puffy. He holds his head up, though, and gives Lucas a tired smile.

Lucas just nods in reply, and Ammunition Flash gives him instructions. "Salute for me."

As Lucas salutes, Ammunition Flash stands, and puts his on Lucas' shoulders. Lucas blushes. He doesn't know why.

"Do you swear to always remain creative and spontaneous, and be yourself in a world that doesn't want you to be?"

"I swear."

"Do you swear to always remain as a beacon for your fellow Killjoys, and help them and protect them at any cost?"

Lucas thinks of Bulletproof Girl. "I swear."

"Do you swear to always remain loyal to the Killjoy cause, and do whatever you can to support it?"

"I swear."

"From this day onward, your name will be Gravity Ghost," Ammunition Flash finishes. "I hope you serve, fight, and create for as long as you live."

Gravity Ghost. That's perfect, Lucas thinks as Ammunition Flash says the final words of the short ceremony.

"Keep running. Always."
