chapter 1: blood of distrust
“Wake up students!” A cheery voice calls throughout the hotel, “it’s 7am and considering that some of you haven’t checked out the rest of the rooms, it may be best to search. Chop, chop, you don’t have all day.” And like that the voice ceased.
Shinju got up groggily looking at the bed beside hers to see if Atsuko had awoken from her slumber. Unfortunately it appeared that she had already left which was apparent due to the folded sheet on the bed.
Shinju, tired from her rest, got changed and exited. She stared at the first door she saw in front of her, the hand crafted wood with the cross carved into it. This room gave her the creeps as she didn’t know what was inside. Could it be an indoor graveyard of sorts or what?
She pushed the door of the cross room open and was greeted by darkness. Shinju entered quietly walked across the floor hoping not to alert anyone that may be in here, but as she started to walk the door behind her slammed shut. This made Shinju jump in fright at the sound of the door had made and the bright darkness that enveloped her. She continued to walk through noticing that lights started to turn on to show tables with items that were secured with a glass prison. One of these tables caught her eye, this table was like the rest but had a picture of her and a pair of slippers insulated by glass. Shinju was puzzled by this until this emotion turned to fear due to the other two tables she spotted. They were for Naoko’s and Chiyo’s tables, they were exactly like hers except with their picture and a specific item that represented their talent. She looked at everyone else’s that she had passed and found the same result and then continued walking to see the final row of tables.
Nothing changed with the tables but Shinju spotted Conor Daku kneeling in front of a table clearly meditating from where Shinju was standing. Shinju walked closer to Conor as she started to hear crying from the boy. She looked at the table and found what appeared to be a pentagram carved into his photo and a sphere Incase’s within the glass atop the table.
Shinju kneels down beside Conor and gave him a hug which he reluctantly took. She didn’t know what was going on exactly but she figured it had something to do with the killing game announcement that was given yesterday. As she thought she tried to calm Conor down as much as possible until he let go and stood up. He gave a smile, maybe not an encouraging smile, but at least it was a start in making him feel more comfortable.
“D..do you remember h...how y...you got here?” He asked Shinju nervously knowing that she must have remembered something, “um…. I…. I remember...that I was I..in class at h...hopes p...p ...peak when the room filled with smoke.” Conor mumbled just loud enough that Shinju could hear what he had said.
“Wait, you went to hope's peak?” It was obvious that they had went to hope's peak but it was more the fact that the room he was in filled up with smoke that made Shinju start to think about the possibility that they were all from the same class or near each other when abducted by their captors. “I was late to my class so I didn’t get gassed. I was on my way into class when me and chiyo were attacked by these two people. I had turned around only to be knocked from behind.” Shinju told him now a little less shocked
“Oh? I...I’m sorry. The spirits warned me about them, but I hadn’t listened to them.” His voice wasn’t nervous anymore, but instead sound normal.
“You can talk to spirits?” Shinju Asked not really buying it but still went with it.
“Yeah, the spirits tell me things like the fact that you’re going to live a long life and I’ll be there right next to you when you escape.” He looks around and then at the pad we were given the night before which Shinju had totally forgotten about.
“Shoot, I have to go.” He said as he hurried out of the room with Shinju walking behind him just until she exited the room as well in which she just walked right over to the next door which had the game controller carved into it. Shinju pushed the door open and was greeted by a dark Astro decorated room lined with columns of arcade machines of all sorts.
She looked around and found Okami playing a fighting game with Tsubame which wasn’t all that surprising ,considering that she is a cosplayer, but what did surprise her was the fact that Sora was just watching both of them giving motivation which felt off to Shinju. Shinju continued to walk around due to the fact that they weren’t paying attention to her.
Just a couple of minutes later she sees Natsumi who appears to be fixing one of the machines.
“Dam stupid machines!” She cries as she appears to be struggling to fix the game. “These video games are so annoying with their blasters and fight moves.” She paid no attention to Shinju which was fine because it appeared that Natsumi didn’t want to talk at the moment anyway.
Shinju makes her way out of the arcade and enters what she can only assume is the library due to the book caved on the door. As she walked in she is greeted by two pairs of eyes. One of them belonging to Chiyo and the other belonging to Naoko. The library was fairly spacious with bookshelves lining the walls and tables and chairs in the center of the room, there was weaponry encased by glass in front of empty shelves which held swords, and pistols of all sorts.
Besides chiyo and Natsumi though, Michi was reading a book that was about chess while Shiro was writing stuff down onto his notepad. As he finished writing he closed up his notepad, put his pencil behind his ear and walked over along with Chiyo and Natsumi.
“So why are you here?” Shiro Asked Shinju
“Just curious about all the rooms, that’s all.” She said back
Shiro looked in thought while Chiyo chimes in, “Well I hear he’s working on a book of his own.” Chiyo started to think, “What was it about again?” She asked not being able to remember what it was about.
“It’s actually about my experience in this hell.” He gives a joking smile
“Well, that’s neat. Make sure you get the part about me murdering everyone here.” Naoko says villainously
“Please don’t speak like that, especially since we’re in a game that actually involves killing.” Michi said putting down his book. “It’s like a game of chess except one wrong move could end you in your tracks, almost like life itself.” This he had a smile as Naoko’s dropped.
“Very true, we shouldn’t joke about something like that “ Shiro said plainly only for Naoko to leave shortly.
“Naoko? Where are you going?” Chiyo called out as she followed her out of the room
“Well I should probably leave and check out the rest of the rooms” Shinju said with a smile as she leaves.
“Good day to you.” Shiro says with a wave as he gets his notepad back out and starts to write again.
Shinju walked happily as she passed through the dining room were Atsuko and Nana sat.
“Um ... hi shinju.” Atsuko said as Nana gave a confident smile.
“Hi, what are you two doing.” She Shinju Asked not wanting to look at Nana
“Me and Atsuko were just have a heartwarming conversation about animals.” Nana said happily
“That’s nice, I’ll be heading off to the kitchen to check the rest of this place out so see you around.” Shinju walked away giving them a wave as she entered the kitchen.
“Hmpf? Shinju? Why are you here?” Gorou turned questioning Shinju’s appearance.
“Well, I was just looking around and I-“
Gorou cut her off, “this is no place for a lady with your talent, but since you are here to look I won’t stop you…… just don’t touch anything please.”
“Of course.” Shinju said taking in the place.
It was covered in white and black tiles white white tiles climbing along the walls, within the center was a counter full of fruits, seasoning and condiments while spoons and pans hung above. Along the wall was a long counter with a sink and stove with burners ready to cook, the knives were located nearby the stove with cabinets overhead holding yet more food and premodern drinks.
“So have you seen enough?” Gorou said as he went to exit.
“Yep, ready.” Shinju said as she left with Gorou
“It is now 10pm! Get to bed bitches!” An angry voice rang out across the whole place being the bats angry voice.
Shinju wanted to test one thing before she left though so she tried opening the door to the kitchen only to find it was locked. “Interesting” Shinju says as she leaves to head to her room.
She gets to her room and jumps in bed while she hears Atsuko in the shower. Shinju falls asleep wondering why they were forced into this game…..
“Wake up! It’s 7am! Up and at’em! Get down to the dining hall!” The voice ceased and like always I got dressed, left and walked down the hallway to the dining hall which everyone was already there surprisingly.
“I...is everyone hear?” As the ghost appeared on the table, ”um… so we came up with something to get all of you started…….. as in a.. a motive.”
“A motive?” Katsuo said as he leaned against the wall which bugged Gorou
“Heh, sounds fun.” Michi says confidently
The ghost looked at them nervously, “Well….. in simplest terms ... we've abducted your family and friends and are about to be killed if you don't ... kill.” The ghost almost appeared to gulp after saying the word aloud, “uh…” The ghost disappears leaving everyone not knowing what to say and a single note.
Chikako walks over and pick up the note and starts to read it, “hmmm,” she says with a smile,”we can either abide to their rules or we can find the mastermind’s little henchman.”
“What makes ya say there’s a mastamind and a traitor.” Sora already not pleased by the fact that they have to kill each other to escape.
“Well I’m sure those robots can’t write and according to this it’s for the traitor only.” Chikako says ,”meaning any of us could be the mastermind and or traitor here, take them out and we go free.” Chikako says slightly pleased with herself.
Shiro shook his head and snatched the note away from her,”say the mastermind was here and the traitor, why would the robot have dropped this? And if it was an accident, then the traitor would try and steal it.”
“Well……” Chikako was stumped.
Everyone decided to leave after that little dispute while Shiro hid the paper in his pocket. What if there was a traitor watching for the mastermind? Shinju asked herself worried that Chikako was right, but as she was walking down to her room she was confronted by Chito and Naoko.
“Shinju? Would you be interested in hanging out like we did before we came here?” Chiyo Asked waiting for an answer. Shinju was thinking of an answer when she noticed Conor and Atsuko enter the library.
“Shinju?” Chiyo Asked worried that Shinju had zoned out.
“Sorry, Yeah, sure, tomorrow?” Shinju Asked as Naoko looked at her worried
“You aren’t going to kill someone, are you Shinju?” Naoko Asked in a high enthusiastic voice.
Shinju looked at Naoko with a look that made her cower as she continued towards her room, “see you two tomorrow.” Shinju said.
She entered her room and lays down before thinking about taking a shower. And so she does and then falls asleep for a little bit.
She wakes up to find her bed covered in little stuffed animals like the ones on Atsuko’s bed and gets up she looks at the clock and finds that it’s after 10pm and she must have slept through announcements.
She exits to look around the place seeing if she can spot anyone else, but unlucky for her, the hallway and rooms were dimmed so much you could barely see any figures or objects.
She soon found her way to the dining room that was still unlocked and entered only to find a person standing there the lights were still extremely dim and the figure looked familiar.
“What are you doing here?!” The voice shouted as Shinju stepped back in worry.
“I..I was just-“
“No need. I want you to carry this message out to the traitor. Tell anyone else and they shall be killed off in due time and you shall be blamed for their death.” The figure said in a deep voice that sounded familiar.
“W-What message!” Shinju Asked in fear
“You’ll remember…… soon.” And next thing Shinju knows she is awake in her bed.
“It is 7am, get up and at them.” The cheery voice says happily.
“Was that a dream? Shinju asked herself out loud not realizing Atsuko was still in the room.
“What was a dream?” Atsuko asked intrigued.
“Oh, nothing.” Shinju gave an uneasy chuckle and walks into the bathroom after getting dressed to splash water on her face.
That couldn’t have been real, Shinju thought when another memory popped into her head.
“You are to deliver a message to the traitor of my game.” The male had said after knocking out my friend with whatever chemical he used. “You are to tell them that I’ve given them a specific target that needs to be eliminated…… the person that must be eliminated is…. Shiro Nakajima” And then Shinju was knocked out from behind.
Shinju remembered the message she had been given before she was brought here by that person.
Shinju walked out of the bathroom wanting to tell somebody about what she had remembered but knew if she did, their blood would be on her hands. Nevertheless Shinju felt it was her duty to protect Shiro as much as possible, not knowing what was to come.
Shinju left her room and walked down the brightly light hallway until she reached the dining room. She pushed open the door to see basically everyone besides Gorou who was most likely inspecting the rest of the place, Hinata who really doesn’t have a reason for not being here, Conor who was most likely in his room contemplating what had happened at Hopes Peak Academy, Atsuko was wandering around somewhere, while Naoko and Chiyo planned things to do tonight.
Shinju looked around at the faces of everyone and noticed Shiro sitting down drinking a cup of coffee while reading what appeared to be a worn newspaper. Shinju remembering what she had remembered thought it would be a good idea to get to know him better, and so she walked over casually.
Shiro didn’t seem to notice Shinju until she was right next to him, “why good morning Shinju.” He said respectfully as if he was supposed to act that way in this environment.
“Good morning Shiro. What are you reading?” Shinju Asked peaking over at the news article that talked about a riot.
Shiro smiled as he folded the paper up,”nothing but old news.” He said, throwing the paper down on the table in front of him. “So what would you like to talk about? You didn’t walk over here for no reason, did you?” He asks with a playful smile
“No real reason, I just thought the more we know about each other the better we’ll get along in this place.” She said with a slight blush
“Well you’re not wrong about th-“ Shiro was saying before being cut off by the angry voice of the bat.
“Attention all guests of this hotel! If you don’t kill by tomorrow there will be consequences, as in death to everyone here! Chop, chop, watching you students talk is boooorrrrriiiiinnnnngggg!” And just like that the voice ceased
Everyone in the room went quiet while Shinju went to grab herself some food to hopefully keep her mind off the likelihood of everyone here, including her friends….. dying. She didn’t want to think about it but the more she thought the less hungry she became.
She ended up heading back to her room while everyone did their thing silently. It was like some spirit had sucked the joy from their lips during those couple of minutes and they were already put under a state of despair. A despair so strong, nobody ought to talk about anything.
Shinju lay in bed as the world spin in a circle of whirling silence, until eventually she looked at the time. It was 7:32pm, Shinju got up and decided to forget about it for now, besides, she had made plans with her friends to hang out. She exited her room only to meet silence once more, the only sound was coming from the Arcade where Okami most likely was playing some fighting game.
Shinju, just so happened to be living next door, walks over and nocks upon the sturdy wooden door. As she waited, she examined the pixels that hung on plasters above the door until Chiyo came to the door.
Chiyo smiled happily as if she never heard the announcement from earlier and was all set. “So, what do you want to do first?” She asked as Shinju walked in.
The room was decorated with white walls and posters of singers, along with shelves full of trophies and records. The room was silent besides the sound of the shower in the background.
“Oh Shinju, Naoko is in the shower and I believe she’s just about done. Could you, maybe bring her this towel while I set up the karaoke machine? Thanks.” And before Shinju knew it she was handed a towel and pushed into the bathroom.
“Um…. ok,” Shinju mumbled silently as she looked around the bathroom that looked exactly like her besides the immense amount of steam surrounding the room. She started walking toward the shower door when she heard the shatter of the translucent glass as a piece of it cut her ankle. She didn't notice the cut due to the fact her eyes where fixed on something much more disturbing.
The corpse of her friend lying upon the ground on her back as blood trickled down her mouth, along with an apparent knife wound.
Shinju covered her mouth in horror as she stared at the body in disbelief. This couldn’t be happening, she thought to herself as she ran out of the room completely leaving the towel behind. Chiyo, confused, ran after her due to lack of understanding of what was happening exactly. Not until she got to the dining hall where Hinata, Katsuo And Chikako sat in silence as the drank their tea or coffee.
Shinju, out of breath due to running and seeing a body, busts in forcing Hinata to spill accidentally, burning himself in the process.
“What appears to be the problem?” Katsuo Asked obvious that she looked like a ghost.
“N-Naoko *huff* sh..she’s been..*huff*... murdered.” Shinju managed catching everyone in surprise.
“We should round up the others.” Chikako said as she exited the room with Katsuo to gather the rest of the people while Hinata followed the two girls into the room where the crime had been committed only for the crime scene to have changed.
The crime scene wasn’t how Shinju remembered it being before she left. This time Naoko’s body was sitting upright against the wall with the towel over her waist as blood dripped from the shower, nearby was a small pile of glass that had been sweeped up and.
At this point Shinju, felt pain shoot through her body as she collapsed to the ground. She was holding her ankle which had a sliver of glass lodged in into it as blood slowly stopped dripping from the wound.
The door opened and everyone else saw the scene ... except Conor Daku.
