Chapter 4: Explanations

When I awoke in the morning, I couldn't help but feel nervous. What if when I went to meet everyone in the restaurant, there'd be a corpse lying there?

There's only one way to find out.

I left my room, walking downstairs to the restaurant. Hesitantly, I opened the door, bracing myself.

Nothing.

I let out a small sigh of relief. I walked inside, waving to Natsumi and Katashi who were sitting together nearby. I sat at the table next to them, and soon more people entered the room.

First, it was Mai and Willow, and soon after, Michio and Jikkō. After waiting for a bit, Satchiko came and sat beside me.

"Has anyone seen Riku?" Michio asked.

A familiar feeling of fear grew inside me. Riku never talked much, but still, the thought of him possibly....

"I'm sure he'll show up." Katashi said, "but... why don't we start without him? I'll go first."

"Sounds good." Natsumi replied, "but what could you have done that's so bad? You're basically an angel."

Katashi smiled, his cheeks turning slightly pink. "No one's perfect... I cheated on my science exam last year. I was never good at science, and I didn't want to fail...."

"Cheating an exam? That's nothing! My point's proven!" Natsumi exclaimed, ruffling Katashi's hair.

"I'll go next." Willow spoke up. "I was supervising a group of people out looking for snakes... and... we came across a black mamba. It was too fast, I couldn't get to it before it bit someone..." She paused for a moment. "They passed away under my care."

"Willow, that wasn't your fault!" Mai responded. "That's one of the most venomous snakes in the world, I'm sure no one blamed you!"

"But they did..." Willow replied. "Let's just move on...."

"Okay, I'll go." I said, "but first we should find Riku. I'm starting to get worried."

Satchiko stood up. "Okay, I'll check his room! Michio, come with me, I need you to break into it!"

"That's fine with me." Michio said with a small grin, getting up and going upstairs with Satchiko.

"I'm coming too." Jikkō said, following behind them.

It didn't take long for the monitors to switch on, and when they did, I feared my worries had come to life.

"A corpse has been discovered! After a period of time, a class trial will be held~!"

I ran upstairs, everyone else behind me. We entered Riku's room, which was, to my horror, a bloody crime scene. Laying by his bed was Riku's corpse, and blood dripped down his face onto the floor. There was a fork lodged in his left eye, sticking up from where it had entered.

Riku Hanazawa was undeniably dead.

"Why... why did this happen again...." Satchiko muttered, her hands squeezed into fists. In my mind, I was asking the same question.
