Chapter 3: Stolen Memories?

It was later in the day and everyone decided to meet up at the hotel restaurant and discuss their discoveries. It didn't take long for everyone to gather, and by then Kaiya, Satchiko, and Katashi were distracted playing with Cinder on the floor.

Satchiko was dragging a string to make Cinder attack it, and I had to admit, it was pretty cute. The cat wasn't even full grown yet, it was an older kitten as Kaiya had explained.

I looked around at everyone else from where I sat. Akio was at a table nearby, immersed in a book, and I could tell by looking at his face that he was really into it.

Riku was seated across from me, sketching in the notebook he carried around. I noticed he didn't really talk much, but being the ultimate manga artist probably meant he didn't get out much.

Natsumi had started an argument with Michio for whatever reason, she didn't seem to like him very much.

Willow was letting Mai hold her boa constrictor, and the two girls were talking about the snake together.

Jikkō suddenly stood up from the table next to mine. "Are we going to just sit around, or are we going to address the problem at hand?"

"There's a problem?" Akio asked, putting a bookmark in his book and closing it.

"Of course, this whole situation is a problem." Jikkō responded. "And I'm assuming no one found any way to escape. Are there any clues though? Anything?"

"Um, I don't know if this will help, but..." Mai spoke up, petting the snake that was currently around her neck. "I suspected it before, but this new area confirmed it... I lived in this town. I lived in it up until leaving for Hope's Peak."

Satchiko let out a small gasp. "I knew it! I knew our memories were taken!"

"Our memories were taken?" Michio asked, a shocked look on his face. "I mean, it makes sense if Mai lived here, a town wouldn't just become abandoned overnight."

"B-but... my family..." Mai stuttered, "I just... I need to know what happened to them...."

"We'll find out once we escape." Willow said to her in a soothing tone. "They could be fine, they might've just moved."

"Well, at least we know something about our situation now." Jikkō said. "But has anyone found any clues to who the mastermind could be?"

"We don't even know anyone who could be the mastermind, finding them would be impossible!" Natsumi exclaimed.

Jikkō shook her head. "No, the smartest thing for the mastermind to do would be to hide in plain sight. That way we wouldn't suspect them."

"Are you saying it could be one of us?" Michio asked.

Jikkō only nodded. I felt completely torn, what she was saying made sense, but I didn't want to doubt my friends.

"Just think about it." Jikkō stated before leaving the room. A few more people left, but I had nothing else to do, so I stayed where I was.

Kaiya, Katashi, and Satchiko went back to playing with Cinder. After a while, Cinder climbed onto Satchiko's lap, begging to be pet. Kaiya smiled, and said something I really didn't expect.

"If anything happens to me, I want you to take her, Satchiko."

"But nothing's going to happen to you!" Satchiko quickly responded.

Kaiya shook her head. "You don't know that... anyone can be killed here at any time."

Satchiko opened her mouth to object, but decided against it. "Alright... if anything does happen, I'll take care of Cinder."
