Sometimes I Wonder...

Wyatt sat at the dining table, holding his stomach. He had his head on the desk and his eyes shut, attempting to sleep and ignore the empty twinge in his gut.

It had been two days already. The day after Dagger's announcement, they had split up and tried to find the entrance to the fifth floor.

To no avail, of course.

Wyatt sat up, glancing at his peers, who sat around the room in stony silence. It was obvious that they were all starving.

"Man, this sucks," Griffin said, tilting his chair back. "I can't take it. I'm going to sleep."

Thane chuckled darkly. "It's hard to sleep when you've just gotten up and you can't ignore the fact that you have no food."

"Exactly why I'm going to force myself." Griffin said.

He tilted his chair backwards with force. Star made a sound of alarm as Griffin's head slammed into the wooden floor, instantly unconcious. There was a moment before blood began to pool onto the floor.

"Oh, God!" Harmony said. She checked his pulse, and then put her finger under his nose. Harmony let out a breath of relief. "Well, he's not dead. I have to check his head, though."

"I'll help," Thane said, walking forward. "I got his head, you check."

Thane slowly lifted Griffin's head off of the floor as Harmony ran her hands across the back of his skull. "It might be a concussion...but I think he'll be OK. He has a cut on his neck, that's why there's blood. I'll go into the kitchen and get paper towels with water."

Sophie shook her head. "We're idiots."

Nobody said otherwise.

For two more hours, the remaining guests sat around.

Chase sighed, standing up. "This is stupid."

"If we talk, we're wasting energy," Wyatt said.

"True, we're slowly dying, but I'd rather die than not live," Chase said. "This isn't living. We're sitting around. We should be doing something!"

Star slowly nodded. "True. Let's get to know each other."

"What?"

"I believe that if we know each other better, we'll have more hesitation about killing each other," she said.

Harmony came in. She tended to Griffin's wounds before sitting down. "What are we doing?"

"Come sit," Star said.

Harmony nodded, pulling a chair out.

"We're going to tell each other more about ourselves. With this, we won't be as encouraged to kill each other." Star explained.

Chase sighed. "I feel like a three year old in preschool. Anyway, I'll start and get this over with."

Star nodded. "Go on."

"I was born sixteen years ago in..." Chase frowned. "That's odd. I don't remember!"

"Don't remember what?" Wyatt asked.

"I don't remember where I was born. I don't remember who my parents were, who my friends...for some reason, I only know my age and how I have my talent."

"Oh, look, you finally realized!" Dagger appeared. "Didn't know? I wiped your memory! Almost...all...of...it! Ahahahaha!"

Sophie growled. "You're a jerk."

Dagger bowed. "Thank you."

"Master doesn't understand sarcasm," Wyatt said, rolling his eyes. "Don't bother, Sophie."

Dagger looked away. "I should kill you, Wyatt."

Wyatt stood up. "It was a joke. Dagger, it was a joke."

"What did you just call me?"

"Master...Master, it was a joke," Wyatt pleaded.

"I have a very low tolerance of insults, Clark. Next time, you won't be lucky," he threatened.

Wyatt bowed his head. "Yes, Master."

"Anyway, I wiped your memories of your past life. The only thing I let you keep was your age and your talent," Dagger grinned. "Have fun sharing." He disappeared once again.

Star sighed. "Chase, tell us everything you know about your talents."

He nodded. "I am Ultimate Prophet. When I was younger, I had an interest in sorcery and stuff. I ended up going to a school for it, and bought the crystal ball. I have a 60% accuracy rate. It's better than any prophet in the world. I think that was why I was brought here."

"No wonder," Star said. "I'll go next."

They all leaned forward.

"I was born to a family who skilled in forensics and detective work. Even as a child, I was brought along to investigations, and later on I was treated well for my sharp eyes. I solved multiple cases that went cold. I was good in every category involving crime. Then, of course, I recieved the letter from Dagger, who wanted me to be recognized worldwide for my talent."

Harmony nodded. "That sounds like me, kind of. I was adopted by famous doctors. I got tought all this medical stuff and I was advanced as a little kid. They brought me in to see surgeries and check ups done, which explains a little bit as to why I don't react as much towards dead bodies. I was also in the field of forensics and autopsies, so I know a bit on that, too. Dagger invited me to the dinner to treat some kind of a patient."

The group continued telling their stories, until it came to Wyatt's turn.

Wyatt opened his mouth to speak.

His mind went blank. He frowned. "That's odd. I can't remember how I got my talent at all!"

Star looked around. "Wyatt, you're a mystery. Remember the secrets thing that Dagger did for the motivation? I got yours. All Dagger said was, 'Wyatt's secret is a secret.'"

"I don't remember a thing," Wyatt said.

"What?" Griffin woke up.

"We were taking about–" Chase said, getting cut off.

Dagger walked in, the door swinging open. They all turned to him.

"What now?" Chase sighed.

"Just wanted to let you know," Dagger smirked, "the computer is gone."

"WHAT!?" they all gasped.

"I came to give you some more motivation, of course! The little brat program is on the fifth floor! That means someone already knows where the entrance to the fifth floor is!" Dagger crossed his arms. "To top it off, in two days, if there isn't a murder, I'm gonna be destroying that thing."

Star stood up. "You can't do that."

"Watch me." Dagger said, narrowing his eyes.

Sophie growled. "Fighting with this psycho is like trying to diffuse a bomb and play a trumpet at once. It's impossible. Let's just find Alter."

Wyatt cringed at the twinge in his stomach when he stood up, walking to a corner in the room. He bent down, looking for a sign of a secret entrance.

"Man, I haven't been this hungry since I decided to be civil for a day," Griffin grumbled, looking under the table.

Star stood behind Wyatt, who examined the floor closely for clues. Wyatt sighed. "Nothing. Just dust and carpet."

Harmony looked around the room. "Maybe it's the chandelier?" She wondered.

Thane walked over. "Want to take a look?" he asked.

She looked over and nodded, her eyes bright and wide. Thane picked Harmony up, setting her on his shoulders as he stood up on the dining table. Harmony slowly examined the glass. "Look! A lever!"

Everyone stood up. "Pull it," Star said, "let's see what happens."

Harmony nodded, pulling it. There was a rumble and Wyatt looked around for a change. "Nothing happened," he said in confusion.

Star looked around. "There has to be something! Everyone, split up and search! We're a step closer to the goal."

Chase nodded, smiling. "That was some nice, generic encouraging there. I like it."

"Shut up," Star replied, looking behind the curtains.

Wyatt smirked at Chase's face as he looked around, lifting a vase and putting it down. "No dice," he sighed.

They spent half an hour searching, until Griffin sighed in annoyance. "This is impossible."

Wyatt sighed and headed to the Trash Room, gagging. He looked around and inspected the windowsills.

"Hey, there."

Wyatt leapt back. Dagger was upside down, scrutinizing him.

"W...what do you want, Master?" Wyatt stammered.

Dagger dropped, landing on his feet in an impossible manner. "Relax," he sighed, grinning.

Wyatt slowly loosened his tight form, letting out a shaky breath.

"Struggling with searching, perhaps?" Dagger asked, taking a step forward.

Wyatt nodded slowly, afraid to move. Dagger rolled his eyes and walked forward until there was barely any space between them. "Did I ever tell you that you've been my favorite since the moment you walked through the doors to the dining hall?" Dagger whispered.

Wyatt took in a shaky breath. "Yes, Master," he said quietly.

"Because you're my favorite, I'll give you a hint about the next thing to find the fifth floor," Dagger leaned in to whisper in his ear, "The clue is in a place you didn't look inside of." With that, he left, closing the door.

Wyatt stood, confused. He went back into the dining hall, sitting down. "Look inside?" Wyatt muttered, looking around the room.

"What's up?" Cassie asked, sitting down across from him as she blew her bangs back. "You look disturbed."

"Dagger told me a clue. I'm trying to figure out what it means."

Cassie leaned forward, interested. "What is it?"

"He said that the answer to the fifth floor was a in place I didn't look inside of." Wyatt slumped forward, laying his head on the table. "I'm tired. This hunger doesn't help, either."

"Let's think of places to look inside of, then," she suggested.

Wyatt ignored the way his stomach protested he sat up. "Floorboards?"

She shook her head. "I don't think anything would be hidden under them. They're too thin."

He looked around. "I have an idea. How about the vases?"

Cassie brightened. "Let's go!"

Wyatt looked in the vases. A lot of them were dusty on the inside. Wyatt coughed, peering through the tears that came when the dust flew in.

"Look!" Cassie shouted. Wyatt rushed over. He spotted a button.

Star also ran over and peered inside. She grinned. "That's amazing."

"Let's push it," Griffin suggested.

The button was pushed, and suddenly, another rumbling happened. Wyatt spun around, noticing the floorboard under a chair collapse inwards. He crawled over to it, noticing a panel with a passcode.

"Hmm," Wyatt mused as everyone else gathered around. He remembered the passcode in the bathroom. "What if the passcode is the same that unlocks AlterAssassin?"

Star shook her head. "I don't think so. This was made by Dagger, he'd do something else."

"The opposite, then?" Chase wondered, moving closer to the panel.

Sophie scoffed. "I don't think that it'd be that—" she was cut off as Chase entered in the passcode.

DESPAIR.

The room rumbled once again. Star looked at Chase incredulously, who smirked and flashed a peace sign. "I'm amazing."

"Save it, Chase," Thane groaned.

They looked around, eyes widening as there was a trapdoor, opening from beneath the floorboards. Harmony slowly crept forward. "There's stairs."

Thane grinned. "Finally. Let's go and explore."

Wyatt stood up, and began to walk to the stairs.

Chase had managed to find a candle, quickly lighting it up from the fire at the stove. There was a faint light, allowing the remaining of the guests to travel until they came upon a spiralling staircase.

Star took a deep breath, starting up. "Let's go."

The trip was long. Wyatt felt faint after five minutes of walking, his energy dimming. He dug his fingernails into his palms, continuing until they came along the double doors.

Griffin kicked the door open. There, in the center room, was a pedestal. The small window on the ceiling cast sunlight among the surface. There was a computer on it.

Wyatt smiled in relief, walking towards the pedestal. He stopped dead in his tracks suddenly, eyes widening at the scene. He fell to his knees. "No. It can't be."

The computer was in millions of pieces.

AlterAssassin was dead.
