Go Away. Just Go. (Trial Five: Part Three)
"Guys, wait!"
Everyone froze, their hands on the levers. The silence was cut off by the quiet voice of Griffin.
"What...the...hell? Make up your mind, Wyatt!" He snapped.
Wyatt let out a shaky breath. "It's not Chase. I've thought over it. It's DEFINITELY not Chase."
Star released the lever, her face in a slight scowl. "What now, Wyatt? It's Chase!"
Wyatt shook his head. "I don't think it is."
Chase blinked, tears falling down face. "Thank you, Wyatt. Oh, thank you thank you thank you."
Dagger groaned. "Trial continued! Though I'd like to get more important things done...well, I can't ignore a contradiction." Dagger grinned, sitting back down. "But please, my dear Wyatt. I have an execution and a girlfriend to get to."
Cassie faked a gag. "You have a girlfriend?"
He frowned. "I'm such a wonderful, kind, good-looking man. Of course I have one."
Wyatt shook his head, shaking off the thought. "Anyway. Let me explain why Chase couldn't be the killer."
Griffin sneered, crossing his arms. "Alright. Explain how the obvious killer is not the killer."
He took a deep breath, looking at them in the eyes. "I'm sorry, Chase. But though I saved you from an almost sure death, I don't believe completely that you're not the killer."
Chase smiled weakly. "I swear, if you get me out of this situation I'll haul you to me and kiss you."
"Please don't," Wyatt groaned. "That's disgusting."
Griffin growled in impatience. "Hello? Enough of the romance, you can find a room later! I want to know why Chase is not the killer!"
Wyatt nodded. "True, Chase could be the killer. However, there's someone who's just as suspicious."
Harmony bit her lip. "Who...?" Her voice trailed off.
Wyatt took a deep breath, steeling his nerves. He threw his hand out to the side, pointing. "You, Griffin!"
Griffin took a shocked step back, stumbling to the floor. "Me?"
Wyatt nodded. "Think about it, Griffin. You were even the one who miraculously managed to figure out that the murderer was also the one who set up the drawing and killed AlterAssassin."
Dagger made a whine in protest. "Why the hell are you portraying that brat as a human? He's an AI living in a MacBook!"
Star tilted her head to the side. "Oh, I'm sorry. Wyatt, the thing spoke. Please continue."
Dagger growled lowly, rolling his eyes.
Wyatt nodded hesitantly. "Right."
Griffin scoffed, glaring. "Didn't I tell you? Anyone would be smart enough to figure out that it's connected. I just spoke the opinion of about...oh, five other people in this room besides you?"
Star shook her head. "No, Griffin. From that insufficient amount of evidence, it's difficult even for someone like me to figure that out."
Thane sighed. "I hate to say it, Griffin, but I trust Star's credibility as a detective more than yours."
Griffin's eyes darted around. "You can't prove it! It...it's so obvious, though! How could you not see it?"
Wyatt sighed, looking down. "Griffin, it's so obvious, though. How could you not see it? Even Star couldn't figure out that the sequence of events were connected. Unless you're lying about this."
Griffin growled. "Alright. So you suspect me as a murderer. In that case, how was I supposed to set up? How was I supposed to kill AlterAssassin, draw that great of a picture in LESS THAN TWENTY MINUTES, and then have the time to kill Sophie and hide the evidence?"
Harmony let out a shaky breath. "That's wrong, Griffin," she said quietly.
Griffin glared at her, eyes filled with pure malice.
Harmony flinched in fear, holding her hands up. "I-I'm sorry! But...I remember when I went into your room that one day. To see if you happened to have an excess bandages. Remember? You were working on a pen and ink drawing of a lady at a ball. I know now. My memory was fuzzy of it. That style...it's exactly like that drawing of Cassie! Maybe your writing on the wall was different, but you must've purposely made it messy to look like someone else's! You're the Deceiver, after all. It would've been easy to imitate or change your own handwriting."
Griffin growled. "Alright. So my magic is lying. That doesn't say anything."
Wyatt frowned. "OK. So we know that Griffin is a potential suspect for Cassie's threat. Where was he, anyway?"
Star thought for a minute. "Your alibi would also fit, Griffin. Remember? Wyatt left and then you claimed you were going to the 'bathroom.'"
Griffin clenched his fists together. "Alright. What about AlterAssassin then? If I'm correct, I couldn't have killed him. We were all joined and starving at the—"
"No, that's wrong," Thane said quietly. "Remember? We were all sleeping that day to conserve energy. You must've taken the opportunity to get the the fifth floor. Since we were all unconscious at that time, we didn't hear nor feel the rumble when the levers were pulled. I was wondering why the tarp looked so familiar. It was because that specific tarp was also the one in the trash room!"
Wyatt nodded. "That blue eye....that's the same shade as Chase's. You must have 'altered' your appearance to make your eyes lighter in color."
Griffin growled in response, speechless.
Cassie frowned. "Hold on a minute. What about Thane's incident?"
"Simple," Chase replied. "I didn't do it. The one other person with me did when Thane went crazy. Griffin knocked me out, so I was unconscious. He was the one who beat Thane until he lost his memories."
"Hold the fuck up for just one moment!" Griffin yelled.
Everyone went quiet.
Griffin took a deep breath. "Alright. So I seem just as suspicious as Chase. In that case, there's one last issue. How was I able to get the poison?"
There was nothing but stony silence. Cassie sighed despairingly, sinking to her knees. "We're back at square one again," she whispered, hugging herself.
Star looked down at her hands, shaking her head. "And so far..."
Thane looked down at his shoes. "Stupid. Stupid."
Wyatt looked at his stand, his mind racing with thoughts. True...how WAS he able to get the poison? Hmm...wait. There's one more thing that could prove him guilty!
"I have an answer," Wyatt said, looking up. "You ARE the killer of Sophie, Griffin! Remember?"
Griffin appeared, turning around the corner. "Hey, sorry. I had to check the chemistry room for the poison. I found it." He held up the vial for them to see.
Griffin's eyes widened.
Wyatt held his hands outward. "You lied. Dagger, answer this for me."
Dagger raised an eyebrow. "Yes, dear?"
Wyatt swallowed down his gag reflex. "That poison. Is it in the science room?"
Dagger shook his head. "Nope. I don't use that chemical in there. I've never seen it."
Wyatt nodded. "See, Griffin? When you said you found the killing poison in that room...it was a lie! It wasn't even there in the first place! You brought it with you!"
Griffin gritted his teeth together, finally releasing his clenched fists before he looked up at them. "Fine. You win."
Cassie blinked. "What?"
Griffin laughed, looking down at his stand. "You're right, guys. I murdered Sophie. She was already dead the minute I poisoned her food. I noticed that she was the only person out of the sixteen of us who ate crêpes. So I gambled and took my chances." He smiled, looking up. "So you've solved this murder! Congrats! I have one last request."
Chase raised an eyebrow.
He sighed, closing his eyes and reopening them, his blue eyes piercing into each of theirs. "Let me review what the murderer did."
The room was quiet, standing in shock.
Star laughed bitterly as she stepped back from her stand. "Do it."
Griffin smiled, sitting on the stand. "The plan was truly simple. The killer decided to have Sophie die without herself knowing. They had prepared a poison from the very beginning, and used it on her because she was the most predictable.
"The poison wouldn't actually kill her until a month later. They knew the exact date. From there on, they used different rooms and people in the manse with them to form the perfect conviction of another and tear away all suspicion from them.
"They decided their diversions to be on the fifth floor when they discovered where it was first. They murdered AlterAssassin, sending the group into panic and confusion.
"While the group was investigating the factory, they snuck away, deciding on one more diversion so the group would be busy, including Sophie, to avoid her dying in front of the group. It worked.
"The killing and removing of evidence was simple.
"First, they decided on using Thane to help them with the possession of others to force them into setting up a death trap. The Despair Disease was also in activation, so when Thane explained his disease, they rested easier. He seemed like the most obvious person to be the murderer. Just as a backup, they used their ultimate skill to copy Thane's power, choosing Chase the minute he offered to take Thane as well.
"They controlled Chase to take all the clues to his own room, including the book, the puppet strings and the doll he had used to control them. When Thane began to go insane, they decided to wipe his memory to create more confusion.
"They took him to the fifth floor, and knocked out Chase. They beat Thane and cut him with the same knife the culprit had used beforehand as an attempt to cover up the fact that Sophie was poisoned to death. Thane lost his memories, and they hid the knife under Chase's bed before coming back to the group, pretending that they'd tied Thane up.
"... and that culprit... is me. Griffin Lighting!"
Wyatt choked down tears.
Harmony broke down. "But...but we even tried to know each other better to avoid the murders! Why did you?"
Star shook her head. "Griffin was asleep. He wouldn't feel the compassion."
Griffin sighed. "Now. We've found out that I was the murderer. Let's vote. I want to get my final act over with soon."
