CHAPTER ELEVEN, the real world (part one)

Brylee and Bennett had been dating for a few months now and they couldn't be happier. She was happy she found someone to share her life with. She loved him so much, and he loved her too. Their love is something she hoped would last forever. She knew they were young, but she believed their love would be the kind that would last for eternity. She could see a future with him, and it was a beautiful sight.

It was just a normal day at school and she was waiting for him outside the art room. She smiled when he came into view, walking over to her and kissing her forehead. She hummed softly and leaned into his embrace, a smile playing on her lips. He then pulled away and grabbed her hand, leading her down the hall. "Where are we going?" She asked with a slight laugh, her eyebrows furrowing.

"You'll see." He told her. She chuckled softly and shook her head, but her smile never left. She followed him down the hallway and into an empty classroom. Her eyebrows furrowed and her smile faded.

"What's going on, Benny?" She inquired, watching him suspiciously. She trusted him, she really did, but him being suspicious and not telling her anything was making her worry. She gasped when suddenly she was pulled into a kiss. Brylee's initial confusion melted away as she melted into the kiss, feeling the warmth of Bennett's affection washing over her. Her worries dissipated as she wrapped her arms around him, savoring the moment.

As they pulled away, Brylee's eyes sparkled with curiosity and love. "What was that for?" She asks. "Not that I'm complaining." She added as she felt giddy by his gaze. He was the only one who could make her feel this way, the only one to make her heart race and her stomach do flips just because of the look he gave her. His blue eyes twinkled with the same amount of love and admiration she had for him, and she couldn't help the soft blush that crept up her neck and stained her cheeks.

"I couldn't help myself." Bennett admits with a sheepish grin. Brylee's lips curl into a smile and she giggles, a light dusting of pink still covering her cheeks. "I feel like I haven't seen you all day." He frowned slightly and she immediately wanted to erase that frown from his face. "We saw each other an hour ago." Brylee pointed out. Bennett shrugged his shoulders and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her closer. She didn't mind, though. She could never get enough of him.

"Still." He muttered.

Brylee laughs and rests her head against his chest, wrapping her arms around his waist. "Yeah, I missed you too." She murmured, smiling when he kissed the top of her head and then buried his face in the crook of her neck. He nuzzled against her skin, his breath warm against her as they stood there in the quiet classroom, wrapped up in each other's embrace.

"We should probably get going." She whispered after a few moments of silence. But she didn't move and neither did Bennett.

Instead, he held her closer and mumbled something that sounded like, "Just a little longer." He kissed her neck and her breath hitched in her throat, the feeling of his lips against her skin sending a shiver down her spine.

"You're gonna be the death of me, Benny." She mumbled, a light pink coloring her cheeks. He grinned against her skin, placing a few more kisses along her neck before pulling away and looking down at her.

"And what a way to go, eh?" He teased, his grin widening when she blushed even more. She swatted his arm playfully and he laughed, pulling her back into his arms.

"C'mon, we should get to class." She said, trying to ignore the butterflies in her stomach. Bennett groaned but complied, reluctantly letting go of her. But then he grabbed her hand and laced their fingers together, making her heart skip a beat. She was sure she'd never get used to the way he made her feel, and she didn't want to.

They walked out of the classroom and headed down the hallway, their hands still intertwined. They walked past the art room, stopping momentarily to give each other one last kiss.

"See you later." She whispered.

"Yeah." He murmured, stealing one more kiss before heading down the hallway, letting go of her hand. He glanced back over his shoulder at her, and they both smiled at each other. She then waved at him before she went inside the classroom.

Brylee's heart fluttered in her chest as she took her seat, still feeling giddy from the kiss. She couldn't wait to see him again later.

****

Later that day at school, she was in the library, working on her homework. She was in her study hall period, so she liked to spend her time there. It was quiet, only a few people scattered around the library. She didn't like spending her study hall with a bunch of loud people, she couldn't concentrate then.

She looked up from her homework when she realized someone sat by her, her eyebrows furrowing slightly when she saw the boy. "Rhys." She voiced, looking at him with slight suspicion.

"Can we talk?" He questioned, ignoring the suspicious look in her eyes. She raised her eyebrows at the request, wondering what he wanted to talk about.

"I guess." She answers slowly, closing her notebook and putting her pen down. "What's up?"

"Look, I know you hate me for cheating on you and I completely understand that. What I did was a jerk move and you didn't deserve that." He explained, his voice low so no one else would hear them. She nodded, her eyebrows furrowed as she listened. She knew she was being cautious and careful because she knew him and what he was like, but she couldn't help it. He did break her heart.

"Uh-huh." She said, waiting for him to get to the point.

"So, I just wanted to let you know that I'm sorry. For everything. And I'm happy you found a guy who makes you happy, you deserve that." He finished, a small smile on his face. Her eyebrows rose at the confession, not expecting that at all.

"Thank you, Rhys." She smiled, grateful he said that and she spoke genuinely. She was thankful he was sorry and that he was happy she found someone that makes her happy. She couldn't believe it though, the Rhys she knew never apologized, maybe he changed?

"You're welcome." He smiles. "So, um, I was also wondering if you could help me out with something. I know you're really good with history and I was wondering if you could help me study for the upcoming test?" He inquired, a hopeful look in his eyes. She blinked and looked at him in slight surprise. She was even more shocked he was asking her to help him, since he wasn't really a studying type of guy. He just always did the bare minimum and didn't really try hard.

She bit her lip as she thought it over, thinking about whether or not she should. It's not like it was a big deal, she was just going to help him study and that was it. But the thing is, she knew him and how he was. Would this end well or will it be a complete disaster?

"Um, I'll think about it." She decided, giving him a tight smile. He returned the smile and nodded.

"That's fine. If you could let me know by the end of the day, that would be great. I would really appreciate it." He voiced, giving her another smile.

"Of course. I'll let you know." She replied. He then bid her farewell and stood, walking out of the library. She watched him leave and sighed, opening her notebook back up and getting back to work. She didn't know why suddenly Rhys was acting like this, and it made her wonder. Was he up to something? Or did he really mean everything he said?

She wasn't sure, but she decided she would wait and see what happens.

****

"Wait, he did what?" Francesca asked Brylee with surprise when they were at lunch. Brylee had informed her friends and boyfriend about what had happened with Rhys and they were both equally surprised, she didn't blame them. She was surprised too. Bennett was sat beside her, his arm wrapped around her waist and she was leaning into his side.

"Yeah, he did. And then he asked if I would help him study for the history test we have next week." Brylee replies. "I'm kind of thinking of saying yes. I mean, I could be wrong, but it seems like he really meant it and that he is genuinely sorry. And if I'm being honest, I think he deserves a second chance. I think everyone does." She added, glancing at her friends who listened.

"Really?" Bennett asks with surprise. He didn't exactly agree with Brylee about this, he didn't want to seem like he was being jealous or anything, but he was just worried about her. He didn't want her to get hurt again. "Are you sure that's a good idea, babe? I don't want him hurting you again."

"I agree." Nikki speaks up, her concerned gaze on her friend. "We all know him and how he is. Can't really trust him."

"But what if he changed?" Brylee said quietly with a shrug. "People can change. I think he deserves a second chance. Maybe he learned from his mistakes and decided he wanted to change. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt." She added, looking at her friends. She understood their worries, but she didn't think they should be so quick to judge.

"Just, be careful." Thor chimes in, looking at her with a slight frown. "We just don't want him breaking your heart again."

"Yeah, I will. Don't worry." Brylee smiles, glancing at them all and then to her boyfriend. She noticed the frown on his face, a slight worry in his eyes. She frowns and leans over to kiss his cheek, her hand easily finding his under the table and giving it a gentle squeeze. "I promise everything will be fine. If not then I will let you know and you can be as overprotective as you want." She teased, a smile returning to her face.

"You know I'll be doing that either way." Bennett responded, a soft smile forming on his lips and squeezing her hand back.

"And that's why I love you." Brylee giggled, her smile widening when he kissed the side of her head.

"Hey, Bry?" Her eyebrows furrowed slightly when someone behind her tapped her shoulder. She turned around, her eyes widening slightly when she realized it was Rhys. She was a bit surprised that he would be talking to her when their other friends were right there, but she tried not to let that bother her.

"Hi, Rhys." She greeted, glancing at her friends when they sent her warning looks, trying to tell her not to do this. She looked back at him, sending them a reassuring look. She could take care of herself, she was a big girl.

"I'm sorry if I interrupted something. I'll leave." He said apologetically and he started to walk away.

"No, you're fine. What's up?" She quickly assured him and he stopped, looking relieved and then nervous.

"Um, it's okay, I'll tell you later. We can talk after school." He suggested, smiling awkwardly and then he walked away. Her eyebrows furrowed slightly and she frowned. He didn't have to go, they could've talked right there. She didn't know why he did that, it was kind of strange.

She shrugged it off, maybe he was just nervous because her friends and boyfriend were right there. They were a bit protective over her, but they were only doing that because they didn't want her to get hurt again.

"I hope you know what you're doing." Francesca spoke, frowning.

"Trust me, guys. Everything will be fine." Brylee smiled. As the others started talking about other things, her gaze went to her meal and she sighed. She hoped she wasn't making a mistake by trusting Rhys, she really didn't want her or her friends getting hurt again. She couldn't handle it. She just had to hope everything would work out.

****

As the last bell rang, Brylee left the classroom and went to find Rhys. She was hoping she was right, that he was actually changing. That he had learned his lesson and was truly sorry for everything. Because if he wasn't, then it would be a lot of heartache for her.

She finally found him by his locker, shoving his books into his bag. She takes a deep breath before she walks over to him. "Hey, Rhys." She greeted.

Rhys looks a bit surprised to see her, but then he smiles a little. "Hi, Brylee."

"I'll help you study for the history test." She stated, wanting to get straight to the point. He blinked and his eyes widened slightly, as if he wasn't expecting her to say that, but he smiled and he looked relieved.

"Really?" He questioned.

"Yeah." Brylee nods. "I'll help you out."

"Okay, cool. Do you want to start tonight?" Rhys questioned, tilting his head slightly.

"Sure, why not?" She answers with a shrug. She didn't have anything going on tonight, so she had nothing to worry about. "We can meet at the library, it's quieter there."

"Sounds good. Thanks for doing this, Brylee." Rhys smiled. The smile looked genuine and she couldn't help but return the smile. She was just glad he was doing this, she hoped he really meant everything and that he was truly sorry and that he had good intentions.

"You're welcome, Rhys." She says. "Well, I'll see you later."

"Yep, see you later." He replied. Brylee then waved and started walking away, hoping she wasn't making a mistake by believing Rhys and giving him a second chance.

****

Brylee walked into the library, glancing around and noticing that Rhys wasn't there yet. She was a few minutes early, so she wasn't surprised he wasn't there yet. She walked over to the table she always sat at, sitting down and pulling her backpack on the table and taking out her history book.

She flipped the book open and looked over the questions and notes, skimming through them. She didn't want to start without Rhys, but she had some time to get a head start. She knew how difficult the questions were and she had to admit, she was impressed Rhys was putting the effort to study for the test. It seemed like he really wanted to pass which made her happy. Because when they had dated he showed he didn't really care about school and just did the bare minimum, it was nice to see that he was actually taking the initiative and wanted to learn.

She heard the door open and glanced up, relieved when she saw it was Rhys. He looked a little surprised to see her, but she wasn't sure why. Maybe he wasn't expecting her to be here so early? She wasn't sure.

"Hi, Brylee." He greeted, sitting across from her and setting his backpack on the chair by him.

"Hi." She said, smiling softly at him as he pulls out his history book, opening it to the page she had her book opened on. "Are you ready?" She queried, her eyebrows raising slightly.

"Yeah, definitely. Thanks again for helping me." He thanked, his blue eyes meeting her brown ones. He looked genuine once again and she nodded, looking back at her book.

"Of course. Okay, so the first question is..."

The two of them were studying for the next hour or so, going through each and every question. When answering questions, Rhys had been confused about some but asked for help and Brylee did her best to answer them and explain everything to him. He seemed to start to slowly understand everything they were talking about and she was glad. She knew the material was a bit confusing, but she knew he would understand it eventually.

When the two of them were finished, Brylee was packing her stuff and Rhys was watching her. She glanced up and met his eyes, a bit curious.

"What's up?" She questioned, raising an eyebrow slightly.

"Are you busy right now? Do you want to grab a bite to eat or something?" He offered.

Brylee's eyebrows rose slightly, a bit surprised by his question. She didn't expect him wanting to hang out with her more. She hesitated because she wasn't sure what to do. Part of her was saying don't hang out with him, he's still the same boy who cheated on her, but the other part was saying maybe he's changing and that she should give him a chance.

"Sure, I'm not busy. What did you have in mind?" She inquired, hoping she wouldn't regret this.

"Well, there's a diner nearby that makes great burgers. I don't know if you've been there, but they're amazing." He replied with a smile, looking relieved that she agreed to hang out with him.

"I've actually never been, but I've heard about the place." Brylee nods. "Let's go." She stood and followed Rhys out of the library, biting her lip slightly as her anxiety was slowly getting the best of her.

Was she making the right choice by giving him another chance? Or was Bennett right about him?

****

As the two walked to the diner, they talked and caught up on things. Brylee was enjoying it and it felt like old times when the two of them were together and it was nice. But, she had to keep reminding herself that it was all in the past and that things were different now. That he was still the same one who cheated on her, who hurt her and broke her heart.

They arrived at the diner and went inside with Rhys opening the door for her. She gave him a thankful smile and entered, immediately loving the vibe of the place. It was simple and cozy and looked really nice.

"I've always loved this place." Rhys voiced, smiling as he led her to a booth and slid into one side, her sitting across from him.

"It's a really nice place. I can't believe I never came here." She mused, looking around. The inside looked like an old fifties diner and she loved it. The name of it was called Dolly's which was also a cute name. She didn't know why she didn't come here sooner, she was definitely going to come back.

"It's pretty amazing. Their food is also amazing, you'll love it." Rhys assured her.

"I'll have to trust your word." Brylee replied, smiling and then the two of them started talking and catching up again.

They ended up ordering two milkshakes and two burgers, along with some fries. Conversation was surprisingly easy between the two of them and it seemed like things were back to normal, but she was cautious. She didn't want to be the fool again, not after everything he did. Their food arrived a while later and it was as amazing as Rhys said it would be. It was probably the best burger she had ever had and she wasn't lying when she said it was delicious.

As the two ate, they continued to catch up and she was surprised with how much he had changed. It was like a different person sitting across from her and she didn't know how to feel about that. Was it a good thing or was it bad? She had no idea, but she was hoping he wasn't faking.

"So, you and Bennett, huh?" Rhys suddenly inquired, his eyes looking a bit curious as he sipped his milkshake.

"Um, yeah. Me and him." She replied with a nod, slightly awkward and not sure where this was going. She was cautious and wary, not sure what was going to happen.

"I didn't expect that." He admitted, his expression indifferent and she wasn't sure how to take that.

"What do you mean?" She queried, her eyebrows knitting together as her heart started to beat a bit faster, worried that this was going somewhere bad.

"Nothing, I'm just surprised, is all. You and him seem really happy together." He answered with a shrug, offering her a small smile.

"Well, we are happy." She confirms, feeling a bit confused by his statement. "Is that a problem?" She questioned, her voice turning a bit sharp.

"No, not at all." Rhys quickly assures her, shaking his head and then sighing. "Look, I'm not going to lie. I miss you. I wish we were still together. I know it was my fault and that I messed everything up, and that you moved on, but I just wanted you to know that I am genuinely sorry for everything." He spoke quietly, his blue eyes looking at her with remorse and sorrow.

Brylee stared at him, not sure what to think or feel. She didn't know what to say or how to respond. She was kind of hoping this was a sign of him changing, but she didn't know if it was the truth. It could be him faking and trying to get her back, but she didn't want that. She was happy with Bennett and she didn't want to mess it up.

"Rhys..." She started, unsure of what to say.

"Look, I get it. You're with Bennett, I'm not trying to steal you away or anything." He interrupts, looking serious. "I know I lost my chance with you. I just, I miss you and I wanted to let you know I'm truly sorry. I hope you'll forgive me one day."

Brylee stares at him with narrowed eyes, wondering if he was lying or not. "Are you telling the truth? Because I will not hesitate to walk out that door and never talk to you again if you're lying. I can't go through that again, I can't have my heart broken again."

Rhys looked shocked by her statement and she wondered if it was genuine. Did he actually mean everything he was saying or was it all an act?

"Brylee, I swear, I am telling the truth." He swears, holding his hands up in surrender and she can see the sincerity in his eyes. "I know I hurt you and I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that, I should've never done that." He sighs, looking ashamed and guilty. "I was beyond stupid and a jerk. I'm sorry for hurting you, I should've treated you better, and I know I messed everything up. I shouldn't have ruined the best thing that's happened to me. And I'm sorry." He repeats, looking sad and Brylee can see the regret in his eyes and she knows he's telling the truth. "I get it if you don't forgive me, I don't deserve your forgiveness. I was a total jerk and you don't deserve that. But I just need you to know that I'm truly sorry for everything."

Brylee stares at him for a long moment, not knowing what to say. She can tell he's being sincere and that he regrets everything and that he was sorry. And it makes her wonder why he didn't tell her earlier. Why did he wait until now? She was wondering why, but she's still grateful that he did.

"Thank you for telling me this, Rhys." She starts, her tone soft and gentle. "And I appreciate it, I really do. But, it doesn't excuse what you did. I don't think I can forgive you...At least not now. I just can't. I'm sorry." She sighed, looking apologetic.

"It's fine, I get it. I'm the one who messed up, you have no reason to forgive me. I just hope you know how sorry I am and that I mean it." Rhys said, sending her a sad, but understanding look. He was disappointed, but he understood and he didn't blame her.

"I can see that you're sorry, and I believe you." She replies, smiling slightly at him. "But, I can't forgive you yet. I'm not ready. Maybe someday, but not now."

"That's okay. As long as you know how sorry I am and how much I regret everything." Rhys smiles a little, but it doesn't reach his eyes. He's hurt, but he's trying to hide it.

"I can see that. And thank you for being honest with me, Rhys. It means a lot." Brylee smiled at him, grateful that he was doing this. She was happy that he was owning up to his mistakes and not trying to blame her or make excuses. That wasn't the old him and she was grateful he was changing.

"You're welcome." Rhys said, looking relieved that she was taking this well. He was still disappointed, but he respected her decision.

They finished their meal in a somewhat awkward silence, both lost in their thoughts. As they left the diner, Brylee couldn't shake the mixed emotions inside her. She appreciated Rhys' apology, but it didn't change the past. She couldn't forget the pain he had caused. It would take time for her to forgive him and even longer before she could trust him again.

As Brylee and Rhys walked out of the diner, the atmosphere between them seemed heavier than before. The mixed emotions lingered, and Brylee couldn't shake the uncertainty about whether Rhys had truly changed or if it was just a momentary remorse.

As they stepped onto the sidewalk, Rhys speaks up. "Brylee, I really appreciate you giving me a chance to apologize. I know I messed up, and I don't expect you to forgive me immediately. I just want you to know that I mean every word I said back there." He pauses, taking a deep breath before continuing. "I miss you, and I wish things were different, but I understand that I don't deserve your forgiveness. And if you don't ever forgive me, that's okay too. I just want you to know that I'm truly sorry."

Brylee's heart aches a little at his words, and she can't help but feel a pang of sympathy for him. "Rhys, I can see how sorry you are. And I'm grateful that you apologized. But, it's going to take some time before I can forgive you and trust you again."

Rhys nods, understanding her perspective. "I get it, Brylee. I messed up big time, and I don't expect things to magically go back to how they were. I just hope that someday, you can find it in your heart to forgive me. Until then, I'll respect your decision and give you the space you need."

Brylee appreciates his understanding and sincerity. "Thank you, Rhys. I need time to figure things out, and I hope you're serious about changing for the better. If you are, then maybe there's a chance for us to be friends someday."

A hopeful smile graces Rhys' face at her words, and he nods eagerly. "I promise you, Brylee. I am serious about changing, and I will do everything I can to prove it to you. Thank you for giving me a second chance. I won't let you down."

****

As Brylee walks into the house, she can't help the whirlwind of emotions that are swirling inside her. It's been an interesting day, to say the least. She wasn't expecting Rhys' apology or her own feelings that followed. She's conflicted about everything, and she doesn't know what to think or how to feel.

She's relieved that Rhys apologized, and she's grateful for his sincerity and honesty. But, she's also wary and skeptical. She's not sure if he's really changed or if it's just a temporary lapse in judgement. Only time will tell if he's being genuine or not, and she'll have to be careful not to get her hopes up too high.

When Brylee got home, her mom wasn't home yet and she figured she was still at work. She went to her room, noticing Maya was in her room, sketching in her sketchbook. "Hey, you're home finally." Maya smiles when she noticed her. "Where have you been?" She asked curiously.

"With Rhys." Brylee sighed heavily, walking into the room over to her sister. She dropped her backpack on the floor and flopped down on Maya's bed.

"What?" Maya's eyes widen slightly and she sits up. "Why were you hanging out with him? What happened? Did he do something? If he did, I swear, I'll hurt him. That boy is such a jerk, and he deserves the worst." Maya was already standing, looking pissed off and Brylee couldn't help but laugh softly.

"Maya, calm down." Brylee shakes her head, grabbing Maya's hand to pull her back down. "He didn't hurt me...Actually he apologized."

"What?" Maya sat back down, staring at her with disbelief. "You're joking, right?" She asked, her eyebrows raising slightly.

"Nope, I'm serious. He apologized." Brylee repeats, not sure how to feel. She was still conflicted and uncertain about the whole situation. "He asked me to help him study and then we went out to get something to eat afterwards." She explains with a sigh. "I don't know, it's weird hanging out with him again."

"Seriously? I'm shocked, to say the least. He finally has the guts to apologize after everything he's done? It's about time, to be honest." Maya scoffs, rolling her eyes. "But, what are you going to do? Do you forgive him? Are you going to give him a chance?" She asked, sounding curious and concerned. She remembered how devastated and upset Brylee was when she found out Rhys had cheated on her. And she didn't want to see her sister go through that again.

"I'm not sure. Part of me wants to, because I can tell he's being sincere and apologetic." Brylee starts, her voice hesitant and unsure. "But, the other part is telling me to be careful and not to rush into things. It's complicated, Maya. I don't know what to think or how to feel. He hurt me and broke my heart, and it's not something I can easily forgive. It's also something I could not forgive at all."

"I can't make the decision for you, sis. But, I think you should do whatever feels right. Though I gotta say I never liked him." Maya admits with a shrug. "But, it's your decision, not mine. Just be careful, okay? I don't want to see you hurt again." She spoke softly, reaching out to squeeze Brylee's hand gently. She understands the complexity of Brylee's situation and wants to support her in whatever decision she makes, but she also doesn't want to see her get her heart broken again.

"I will, Maya." Brylee reassures her, smiling slightly. "I appreciate you looking out for me, but I'll be fine. I can handle myself. But, thank you for always having my back."

"Of course, B. You're my sister, and I'll always have your back." Maya replied with a smile.

The two sisters shared a hug and Maya promised to always be there for her, no matter what. They were sisters, and that meant they had each other's backs. Even though they had their fair share of arguments and fights, they would always love and support each other.

****

Brylee was laying in bed, scrolling through her phone when there was a knock on her window. She smiled to herself at the familiar knock, knowing who it was. She got up and unlocked the window before opening it, letting her boyfriend in.

Bennett grins as he climbed through the window, his eyes brightening when he saw her. "Hey, beautiful." He greeted, leaning down to give her a kiss.

Brylee melted into the kiss, feeling herself relax and all the tension from earlier dissipate. She wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer and deepening the kiss. Bennett smiled against her lips, holding her close as they kissed.

When they pulled apart, they were both smiling and gazing into each other's eyes. Brylee's heart was racing, and she felt warm and content. Bennett was her anchor and safe haven, and she was so grateful to have him in her life.

"Hi." She smiled up at him, her voice soft and quiet.

"Hi." Bennett grins, his eyes full of love and adoration. "So, how was the whole Rhys thing?" He asked curiously, his expression turning concerned.

"It was interesting." Brylee admits, letting out a sigh as she sat down on the bed. Bennett sat next to her, taking her hand and intertwining their fingers. "He apologized and seemed sincere. But, I don't know if it's genuine or not. I don't know what to do, Benny."

"Do what you feel is right." Bennett advises, squeezing her hand gently. "It's your choice, babe. I mean, I still don't trust him or like him, but I support you. Whatever you decide to do, I'll be here." He reassured her, his eyes full of sincerity. He was afraid that if she forgave Rhys and trusted him again, she would just get hurt again and maybe even worse than before. He didn't want that, he hated seeing her hurting and he would do anything to keep her from getting hurt. But, it was her choice and he would respect her decision.

"Thank you, sweetheart." Brylee murmurs, resting her head on his shoulder. "You always know what to say to make me feel better. I love you."

"I love you too." Bennett smiles, wrapping an arm around her and pressing a kiss to her temple. He wished there was more he could do to help her, but he knew he could only be there for her and support her in whatever decision she made. "So...How about we cuddle and watch a movie? We can forget about everything for a while." He suggested, knowing that she could use some distraction.

"That sounds perfect." Brylee nodded, a bright smile spreading across her face. She was grateful to have Bennett in her life. He always knew what she needed, and he was always there for her. She knew she could always count on him, and she love him for that.

Bennett smiled, bringing her hand to press a gentle kiss to the back of it before he got up and went to grab her laptop that was on her desk. He then kicked his shoes off and climbed in bed under the covers by her, giving her laptop to her so she could pick the movie. Brylee settled by him, leaning into his warmth. Together, they scrolled through the movie options, discussing their preferences and finally settling on a romcom. As the movie played, Brylee found herself immersed in the laughter and storyline, momentarily forgetting the complexities of the day.

Wrapped in Bennett's comforting presence, Brylee felt a sense of security. His steady heartbeat beneath her ear and the warmth of his embrace helped ease the lingering tensions. The movie served as a welcome distraction, allowing them both to enjoy a carefree moment together. The weight of the day slowly lifted, and Brylee found solace in the simplicity of their shared moments.

When the movie was over, they remained in each other's arms, content in their own bubble of happiness. Time seemed to stop as they laid there, just enjoying each other's company. No words were necessary as their love for each other filled the silence, and Brylee felt completely at peace.

As the night went on, it was getting late and Bennett realized he should probably get home. So he reluctantly untangled himself from her and started putting his shoes back on. "I should probably go." He said, giving her an apologetic look.

"I wish you could stay." Brylee murmured, biting her bottom lip.

"Me too, but it's a school night." Bennett replies, sighing softly. He reaches out and tucks a strand of hair behind her ear, his fingers trailing along her cheek gently. "You should get some sleep, gorgeous. It's late, and you had a long day. I'll see you tomorrow, okay?" He smiled warmly at her, his love for her evident in his eyes.

Brylee nods, leaning in for a quick kiss before reluctantly letting him go. "Yeah, I'll see you tomorrow. Thanks for being here for me, Benny. I appreciate it more than you know." She said, her voice soft and genuine.

"Of course, babe. You know I'll always be here for you. I love you." Bennett told her, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.

"I love you too. Drive safe." She murmured, watching as he opened the window and climbed out. He gave her a soft smile and a small wave before he got climbed out the window. When he got on the fire escape, he looked at her with one last smile and gave her a wave before he started to climb down the fire escape. Brylee sighed when he was gone, she was missing him already. She closed her window and locked it before shutting the curtains. She changed into her pajamas and put her laptop back on her desk.

As Brylee settled into bed, her mind was still buzzing with the events of the day. The conflicting emotions about Rhys and the comforting presence of Bennett left her in a state of contemplation. She knew that forgiveness and trust were not things to be rushed, and she needed time to process everything.

As she lay in the quiet of her room, she couldn't help but wonder about the sincerity in Rhys' apology. Was he truly remorseful, or was it a ploy to regain her trust and he was planning to hurt her again? Her heart ached at the thought, and she desperately hoped that his apology was genuine. Only time would tell, and she would have to remain vigilant and careful. But, Brylee couldn't help but hope for the best. Despite the past and his actions, a small part of her missed Rhys and longed for the bond they once had. Maybe, with time and patience, they could build a new relationship that was based on honesty and trust. Until then, Brylee would have to take things one step at a time and guard her heart carefully.

"So, Maya told me you and Rhys were hanging out? And that he apologized?" Katy asked her oldest daughter the next day at breakfast. Since Katy and Shawn had gotten married, their family of three turned to a family of four and it was strange but not unwelcomed. Brylee had to admit that it was a nice change. She and Maya were still used to Shawn being their stepdad, but it was different. Not a bad different, just something that took some time to get used to.

"Yeah, we were." Brylee admits, playing with her food. She didn't have much of an appetite. "He asked if I could tutor him, and we ended up going to get something to eat afterwards. He apologized." She explains. "He seemed sincere, but after what he did, I'm not really sure."

"You need to be careful, kiddo. I don't want to see you get hurt again." Katy told her daughter, giving her a sympathetic look

"Okay, who is this Rhys kid and why do I get the feeling he's bad news?" Shawn chimed in, looking between the two girls with confusion.

"He was her ex boyfriend who cheated on her." Maya responded in a blunt tone as she continued eating her breakfast.

"Oh." Shawn frowns, feeling his protective dad side kick in. He didn't want any guy, ex or not, to hurt his daughter. "Well, if he hurts you again, you let me know. I'll deal with him. And I'm sorry you had to go through that, Brylee. No one deserves that."

"Thanks, dad." Brylee smiles at him, grateful for his concern. It was nice to have someone else looking out for her. "And yeah, he definitely hurt me, but I'm hoping he's being genuine. I don't know, it's complicated."

Shawn had to admit he was still getting used to being called 'dad' but he was slowly adjusting. He couldn't help the smile that would tug on his lips every time one of the girls would call him dad. Brylee did it more than Maya, Maya was more hesitant with the whole thing, and Shawn understood. It was still weird, but a good weird. He was glad that Brylee and Maya had learned to accept him as their dad. He knew it wasn't easy for them, especially since their real dad had been out of their lives for years. But, he was determined to be a good father figure to them and do his best to be there for them.

"What's complicated about it?" Maya shrugs. "He broke your heart, and he's a jerk. There's nothing complicated about it." She muttered.

"I know, but I feel like he's really trying to change. I don't know, Maya. It's all just really confusing." Brylee mumbled, not sure what else to say.

"I know, baby. But, you need to be careful and think before you jump into anything. You don't want to rush into anything and get hurt again." Katy said with concern, reaching out to squeeze her daughter's hand.

"Yeah, I know." Brylee nods. "But, it's not like I'm jumping back into anything. I'm just...I don't know. I'm going to wait and see if his apology is genuine. If he really is trying to change for the better."

"Good." Katy gave her a nod of approval. "That's a smart decision, honey. And, if he does turn out to be genuine, I'm glad. But, if he hurts you again, don't be afraid to stand up for yourself and tell him off."

Brylee couldn't help but laugh softly at her mother's comment. She appreciated the concern and advice from both her parents. She was grateful to have a family who was there for her and supported her.

"I'll keep that in mind." She replied, giving her mom a small smile.

"Good." Katy smiles back, patting her daughter's hand.

Brylee was grateful for her parents' support and concern, and she knew they were just looking out for her. The same with Maya. It was comforting to know that she had a loving and supportive family.

After school the next day, Brylee found herself sitting by Riley and Maya at Riley's bay window. Maya claimed she needed her there for moral support. So, Brylee had agreed and came with her. Though, she was a little confused and uncertain. "Maya, I don't understand what's happening. Why do you need my moral support?" She questioned, glancing over at her sister with confusion.

"We have to prepare for a debate for History, everyone but Riley is on the good side." Maya explained and Brylee nodded in realization. She knew that Maya and her friends have kept Riley from knowing about the bad things of the world, wanting to keep her innocence intact for as long as they could.

"Ah, I see." Brylee murmured, glancing over at Riley with sympathy. She knew this would be hard for the girl. She found it sweet how her friends wanted to keep Riley protected and innocent. But she also thought Riley deserved to know and she would find out the truth eventually. She couldn't be sheltered forever, as much as Maya and the others wished she could.

"Okay, I think it's best we do this little at a time." Maya suggested, turning to the laptop that was on her lap.

"Why?" Riley inquires and in response, Maya opened the laptop a little, showing an image to Riley. "Close it." She quickly demanded. Maya did and smiled reassuringly at her.

"You did great. Lollipop?" She offered.

"May I have a red one, please?" Riley asked. Brylee chuckled a little as she glanced at the bowl of lollipops by Maya. They were all red, no other color. Maya was definitely prepared for this, she thought. Maya pretended to look through the lollipops as if they all weren't red, earning an amused smile from Brylee. Finally, Maya picked out one and handed it to Riley, who beamed at her.

"Okay, so I wasn't prepared." Riley admits, pulling the plastic off the lollipop. "But I'm glad you started out with the worst thing possible."

Brylee grimaces a little at Riley's comment, knowing what Maya showed her wasn't the worst thing possible. "Uh, well..." Her voice trailed off as she glanced at Maya, not sure what to say.

"You know what? You just tell me when to stop." Maya suggests after sharing a look with her sister. "Okay." She opened the laptop again to show the image to Riley once more.

"Please tell me that is the worst thing possible." Riley frowned.

"Yep, it is. There's nothing worse than that." Maya deadpanned.

"I don't want to live in a world like this!" Riley cried out as she pointed at the picture. The picture had been of a half shaved goat. Brylee couldn't help but sigh softly and grabbed a lollipop for herself out of the bowl. She had to admit she was a bit jealous of Riley thinking that half shaved goat was the worst thing in the world. She sometimes wished the worst thing in the world was a half shaved goat and that was it. But unfortunately, there were a lot worse things in the world than that.

"Riley, you're wearing a wool sweater." Maya pointed out in a soft voice.

As Brylee took the plastic off her lollipop, she watched with wide eyes when Riley suddenly jumped up and quicky tried to get the wool sweater off her. Brylee had to bite back a laugh as she watched the other girl struggle. It was pretty amusing to watch. Riley was being a bit dramatic, she thought, with taking the sweater off so quickly. Eventually managed to get the sweater off, breathing heavily as she sat back down on the bay window. Maya had a small mischievous grin on her lips, amusement shining in her eyes while she playfully shoved the sweater back at Riley. Riley let out a yelp and quickly threw the sweater out the window.

Maya looks at her with offense. "That's the last time I ever loan you anything!" She pouted.

"Okay, what else you got?" Riley asked, trying to calm down her fast breathing.

Maya then suggested they start with what's happening in their backyard, also known as New York City. She pulled up the news headlines of what was currently happening. Brylee could see the color drain from Riley's face, and her expression twisted into one of horror and disbelief. Maya had an apologetic and sympathetic expression on her face as she watched Riley read the headlines.

Brylee moved to sit by Riley since she currently sat by Maya and she put a comforting hand on Riley's back to comfort her through this hard time. Brylee knew that learning about the bad things of the world wasn't an easy task, and it was especially hard when you were like Riley, who had been sheltered and protected for so long. She couldn't imagine how Riley was feeling at that moment, and her heart ached for the girl. She was just going to do the best she could with supporting her and being there for her.
