Chapter Twenty

As Eva and Clint climbed into the rubble of one of upper Manhattan's skyscrapers, they could hear the civilians calling out for help. They were everywhere, in every corner of the room and the duo wasn't sure where to start.

"Can anyone walk?" Clint called out, his arrows poised for any surprised attacks.

Several people hobbled there way over to them, covered in dirt and soot. Eva was quick in creating a portal to the hospital in Brooklyn allowing them to run to safety. It took what felt like hours but the pair was soon able to clear the civilians off the ground floor.

"If only the national guard had superpowers," joked Clint, wiping some sweat off his forehead. Eva made an annoyed face in his direction before practically falling against the tiled wall. Her side ached terribly, she was light headed, and the worry for her family that fought outside took over every part of her mentally.

"We're barely making a dent," Eva heaved, wincing as she clutched her stab wound in pain. "There's people trapped all over this city."

"All lives we save make a difference, you hear me?" He said, his voice stern. "If we can save even just one person, we've done our part. You don't want to fight, this is what you can do."

Eva knew he was right. She could help someone's mother, father, sister, daughter get to safety and away from the attack on the city. She hated the ability she had to cause damage and destruction, but if she could use her powers for good than that would be something she could live with.

"Shall we?" Asked Eva with a smirk, her hand open with a portal to the floor above them.

"That'a girl." Clint said with a wink, running through the bright blue portal, Eva following soon after.

Clint and Evelyn cleared thirty floors, finding and saving over one hundred would be casualties of the attack on New York City. It was on the thirty first floor that chaos found them.

A rogue alien had burst through the glass windows, bringing with it the screeching of whatever vehicle that carried them. It rolled across the carpeted floor, crashed into a desk before leaping onto it's feet with it's weapon raised. Several more aliens followed, diving into the skyscraper with the attempt to kill the last remaining humans on the floor.

Clint easily took three out, while Evelyn blasted two more out of the open window. She leaned against the desk behind her, out of breath and in pain. She could only watch as Clint fought off the remaining aliens before trying to hide her bleeding side from his view.

"You okay?" Clint asked, pulling the arrows out of the aliens heads and placing them back into his quiver. Eva's breath was ragged and she could tell she was losing a lot of blood, but that wasn't going to stop her from helping the people of the city she called home.

"Never better." She smirked before creating a portal back onto the street. Clint covered the area before they both wandered through.

She could hear The Hulk roaring and smashing from above her, and just out of the corner of her eye she could make out his large green frame jumping between buildings. There was the ever present grunting and shouting from her friends and family in her ear, and the fact that they were still alive gave her the energy and strength to push on.

"Help me!" She could hear someone crying out down Park Avenue. She used the help of the wrecked cars and pieces of rubble laying in the street to keep her up as she walked in the direction of the voice.

"We're stuck!" The tiny voice cried out again. She searched under abandoned cars and in the broken windows before finally finding a young boy stuck inside an overturned school bus, his tiny hand was slapping against one of the windows.

"I'm here to help you, okay!" Eva grunted as she sunk down onto the asphalt to talk to the boy. The boy  couldn't have been older than ten, and there were several other kids stuck inside with him. He had a wound on his forehead but otherwise looked okay. Eva was surprised at how calm he was being with the amount of chaos surrounding them.

The door had been crushed, however it was easy for Evelyn to create a portal inside the bus which allowed all of the kids to run out of the back.

"Wow!" Many of them exclaimed, ignoring the flying aliens and rubble to focus on Evelyn's ability to create a portal from thin air.

The young boy who called out to her, tugged gently on the end of her bodysuit. "Are you a superhero?" He asked in wonder.

Evelyn chuckled before shaking her head. "I'm not. I'm just someone who was in the wrong place at the wrong time."

"You look like you were in the right place to me!" He said with excitement. "We were on a field trip to the zoo, but we never made it there!"

The other children ran out of the street, and into an open book store where an employee was waving them through. The boy however stayed by Evelyn's side. "You need to get out of the street, you need to get where it's safe."

"What's your name?" He asked, ignoring Eva's pleas for him to run to safety.

"I'm Eva, and you?" She said, holding her bloody hand out for him to shake.

He smiled brightly, with two missing teeth before placing his tiny hand in hers. "I'm Peter Parker."

"Well Peter Parker, there's kind of an alien invasion going on right now. So if you could do me a huge favor and get to safety I would really appreciate it." Evelyn flicked her wrist creating a portal across the bridge, and Peter looked on in wonder before slowly walking through.

"I won't ever forget this!" He called out in amazement before Eva closed the portal behind him.

Evelyn's eyes were losing focus, and her skin grew clammy. She knew she was losing an obscene amount of blood, however that stubborn part of her persona refused to allow her to quit. There were hurt and trapped civilians all over Manhattan and she would be damned if she went down from a little blood loss before helping them.

"I've got the scepter, I can close it!" She could hear Natasha calling out in her earpiece.

"Close it!" Called Steve.

Evelyn whipped her head around violently to find her friends as she had wandered away from Clint, but to no avail. She stood alone in the wrecked streets of Midtown, New York. She huffed and kneaded her palms into her eyes to clear her blurry vision before slowly blasting away two errant aliens who had wandered her way.

"No, don't! I've got a nuke coming and I know exactly where to put it." She could hear Tony's slightly metallic voice before seeing his red and gold armor fly overhead. He was carrying something large and cylinder and he was flying in the direction of the portal to space.

It took Evelyn only two seconds before she realized what her brother was doing.

"Tony!" She cried out, watching her brother fly to the portal in outer space, a Chitauri Leviathan hot on his tail.

"Eva, where are you?" She could hear multiple people call to her in her ear piece, she could only focus on her brother's disappearing armor. Tears clouded her vision, and she found herself sinking to the streets and leaning against a broken down taxi.

"Stark, that's a one way trip." Said Steve.

"Yup." Tony answered. "Eva, Sweets. I love you. You keep pushing, and you fight back no matter how hard you hate it!"

"Tony! No!" Evelyn sobbed out, staring hopelessly at the empty portal in the sky.

"Close it." A defeated Steve replied after several hopeless minutes of watching the sky.

"Tony, please!" was all Evelyn could muster as she sat weak and bleeding in a pile of rubble. Her consciousness was fleeting, and just as her eyes were beginning to close she could barely make out the shape of her brothers red and gold armor flying back through the portal.

~

"It's been two days."

"Just have some faith, she's been through this before."

"This shouldn't keep happening to her!"

Evelyn could hear Steve and Tony arguing from beside her. She could hear their voices prominently, as well as Natasha's distant voice further away. There was the beeping of a heart monitor and murmuring she couldn't quite make sense of. She was acutely aware however that she was once again in a hospital.

A moan passed through her lips as she began to fully awaken, and she blinked away the blurriness in her eyes. Both Tony and Steve rushed to her side, worried glances passing between them.

"Thank God." Steve grumbled, tenderly grabbing her hand in his. She sent him a reassuring smile before squeezing his hand in return.

"Were you out of your damn mind?" Tony asked. The relief between the Stark siblings was palpable, at the knowledge that they were both okay.

"Are you?" She retorted. "I think flying a nuclear bomb into space is a little crazy."

"She's got you there, Stark." Natasha chuckled from the doorway. "Must run in the family."

"I wasn't going to sit on the helicarrier and watch you all fight Loki's army, when I have the ability to help." Evelyn winced as she tried to sit up in the hospital bed, Steve was immediate in helping her rise the bed so she could sit upright. "Did you catch him?"

"Oh yeah, Thor took both him and the tesseract back to Asgard." Steve answered, his thumb subconsciously rubbing circles against the back of her hand. That warm feeling she had been getting every time Steve was around, was very evident to her in that moment.

"I would have liked to punch him in the face before he left." Evelyn chortled, staring at the tender spot where Steve was holding her hand. "For me and for earth."

"I think Rogers took care of that for you." Said Natasha as she walked closer from her spot in the doorway. She smirked in Steve's direction before sitting in the chair at the end of the bed. "Isn't that right, Steve?"

Steve rolled his eyes before answering, "He deserved it."

"He had already been arrested and thrown around the room by The Hulk." Natasha responded, crossing her denim clad legs across one another. Her mischievous eyes kept fleeting between Evelyn and Steve.

"Thank you." Evelyn whispered to Steve. She took her hand and gingerly ran it along his cheek, he tightened his hold on her hand and leaned into her touch.

"I told you I'd always fight your bullies." He whispered, ignoring the curious glances of Tony who sat across the bed.

Evelyn couldn't deny that she was in massive pain, her side was aching and she had a blinding headache. But knowing her friends and family survived Loki's attack and that he had been apprehended was enough to give her a calming feeling she hadn't felt in quite some time. She had no idea where her future was going to take her, however she knew exactly who she wanted by her side.
