Chapter Twelve

Evelyn tossed and turned for hours, she couldn't seem to make her brain shut off long enough to fall asleep. She contemplated one of her sleeping pills, but it had been so long since she had one  and she didn't want to start that habit again. Her navy blue sheets were thrown askew as she let out a frustrated sigh before jumping out of bed.

She secretly knew what was keeping her up, it had been on her mind for weeks. The tesseract. She didn't know why but she felt like it was calling to her, like it was trying to tell her something. She didn't understand any of it herself, she couldn't even explain it to anyone if they asked. But ever since the tesseract gave her these abilities, she felt some strange connection to it from the moment that blast first hit her.

"Oh, screw it." she mumbled, quickly changing out of her pajamas and into a pair of old jeans and a sweatshirt.

She couldn't listen to her brother and Steve tell her to stay away from the tesseract anymore. So she created a portal and quickly found herself in New Mexico.

"Dr. Stark?" a S.H.I.E.L.D agent mumbled as she had suddenly appeared out of thin air. She ignored him before quickly maneuvering through the busyness that was the S.H.I.E.L.D base. Many people greeted her in confusion before she found someone she actually knew.

"Eva?" Fury exclaimed in surprise, looking down at the youngest Stark with a raised eyebrow. "What are you doing here?"

"Where is the tesseract?" she asked, looking around his towering frame.

"Here, I'll show you." he told her, grasping her arm gently and guiding her through the hustle and bustle.

The lab looked similar to the one in New York that previously housed the tesseract, the same computers, lab equipment, white boards with algorithms and equations lining the walls. The differences being a couple new scientists she hadn't seen before and the tesseract now had a metal contraption built around it.

"Is that because of me?" Evelyn asked, motioning to the tesseract.

"It's a containment mechanism. Dr. Selvig designed it to avoid any energy surges like the one that got you."

"Is it working?" she asked.

Fury shrugged before answering. "A few spikes have registered on our computers, but nothing like the one with you. "

"It's actually a Compact Muon Solenoid Coil Chamber," a new gentleman that Evelyn had never met had now entered the conversation.

"Dr. Eric Selvig." he held his hand out for her to shake.

"Evelyn Stark," she smiled before placing her tiny hand in his.

"Dr. Evelyn Stark." Fury added. "You never tell anyone your full title,"

"Are you a physicist as well?" Dr.Selvig asked her.

Evelyn shook her head before responding. "I work in a library,"

Fury looked at her in confusion before placing his large heavy hand on her shoulder. "Don't let her modesty fool you Doctor. She earned her first PhD in engineering before she was seventeen. And her second in robotics before she was twenty."

Evelyn rolled her eyes and shook her head.

"That is very impressive!" Dr Selvig told her.

Evelyn never liked to share with most people that she was a Doctor, because it would then lead to questions as to what realm she practiced in, where she worked, the questions were always endless. And the answers were always so hard to give. Because she wasn't doing anything with either of her degrees, not in any sense that counted. She hadn't gone into her lab to tinker with anything, she hadn't done anything good with the degrees she worked so hard for, everything since graduation that had been created by her hands had been forced by other people.

Fury and Selvig got into a conversation of their own, which allowed Evelyn to wander off to get a closer look at the tesseract. She was hesitant to touch it again, but the energy was pulling her in, and she placed her palm gently against the side. Her vision was suddenly overtaken by the sight of the S.H.I.E.L.D base crumbling, the tesseract falling into someone else's hands, and a tall man with long black hair.

Her eyes shot open to see the base was fine, the tesseract was still under her palm, and there was no man with black hair. But the premonition of dread was burying itself into her body like a leech. And when the computer that was attached to the mechanism started to whine, she knew the premonition was more than just that.

"Director, we've got a spike!" one of the agents called out from behind the desk. The busyness that was surrounding her seemed to increase ten fold.

A firm yet gentle hand suddenly placed itself on her shoulder, she whipped around to meet the green eyes of Clint Barton.

"Clint!" Evelyn exclaimed, pulling him into a quick hug.

"What are you doing here, Eva?" Clint asked, his worried eyes wandering from her to the tesseract and to the whining of the machines that surrounded them. Evelyn trusted Clint, but she wasn't quite sure if she was ready to bring him into the craziness that had now settled itself inside of her. She was bound to have to use her abilities in front of her friends at some point, but she was hoping to keep that day as far away as possible.

"I just needed to get a second look at the cube, I obviously didn't get to finish last time," Evelyn chuckled.

"You sure picked a hell of time," said Clint, motioning to the craziness around them.

"All S.H.I.E.L.D agents level five and below, and non-essential personnel make for immediate evacuation." a voice called out through the loud speakers. It then made to repeat the same message multiple times.

Only about half the agents in their level moved to leave, most of the people were civilian scientists still mulling around doing their work.

Evelyn felt tingling in her hands, and looked down to see the glowing had reappeared , and the bright blue wisps were once again gently dancing through her fingers. She had managed to get control over them before, they only appeared when she was using her powers, but now they once again seemed to have a mind of their own.

"Director, levels are climbing!" she heard Dr.Selvig call out from behind one of the computers. The ground started to tremble beneath her feet, and she slowly made her way closer to the cube.

"Eva, are you crazy? Get away from there!" Clint grumbled, grabbing her arm to pull her back but she shrugged him off.

Her hands seemed to find their way back to the tesseract, her glowing blue hands matching the color of the cube. The rumbling in the earth increased as did the tingling in her fingers. She could feel the activity of the tesseract, she could feel it behaving in a way that was going to put everyone around her in danger. It was warning her and pulling her in all at the same time.

"He's coming." she whispered, turning around to meet the terrified eyes of Clint Barton.

"What the hell?" Clint responded, eyeing her hands that were resting against the side of the cube.

The second Evelyn pulled her hands off the cube, the energy burst through the coil chamber creating a beam that landed on the other end of the room. A portal was created, one that almost identically matched the ones created by Evelyn, and from the portal stepped the tall man from her vision. He was hunched over, breathing heavily, and carrying what appeared to be a large staff.

"Sir, put down the spear!" Fury called from across the room.

The man looked down at the spear in his hands before firing a beam into Fury's direction, Clint was quick in grabbing him and pulling them both out of the way. Evelyn was at odds with herself. She did not want to use her abilities to harm anyone, she did not want to be viewed as a weapon. But as she looked to the alien man who was now shooting beams and attacking agents left and right, she saw she had no choice but to fight.

She shot an energy blast in the direction of the man, it hit him in the back causing him to fall over. He was quick in turning his attention to her, a devious smirk found it's way across his face.

She created a portal across the room that led to the top level, allowing whoever was able to evacuate the room.

"Get out of here!" she shouted to Fury who was looking at her with worry. Several agents ran through the portal, pulling injured scientists along with them, yet Fury remained.

"Who are you?" the man asked, looking at her with intrigue. His voice was deep with an air of mischief to it.

"Evelyn Stark. And I hate to tell you this, but earth is closed today."

"You are much more evolved than your fellow humans, you should join me, you would thrive at my side!" the man told her.

"Who do you think you are?" Evelyn asked, her eyebrow raised, her hand positioned to attack.

"I am Loki, of Agard. And I am burdened with glorious purpose." Loki told her.

"Loki? Brother of Thor?" Dr.Selvig asked, Evelyn was surprised he was still in the room and hadn't evacuated when he had the chance. Loki rolled his eyes at the comment and turned back to her.

"You possess the power of the tesseract, you, a mere mortal. Tell me how!" Loki yelled at her.

A click could be heard behind them before a gunshot sounded, clearly aimed for Loki. He had quickly dodged it and the bullet lodged itself in the concrete wall. Clint was angrily pointing his pistol at Loki, his eyes glancing between him and Evelyn that stood behind him.

"You have heart, I like that." said Loki, before pointing the scepter at Clint's chest. His eyes suddenly went black and he stood back completely at attention to the God before him.

"Clint?" Evelyn called out, "What have you done to him?"

Evelyn watched as Clint walked over and packed up the tesseract, placing it delicately into a case and then handing it to Loki. He whipped around once more before also claiming Dr.Selvig as his own, she hadn't even seen him approach them. But his eyes now matched the deep black ones of Clint's .

"I will show them their true purpose." Loki told her. She shot a blast at Loki as he walked closer to her, he was easily tossed across the room like a rag doll. His eyes then angrily found hers before he looked to Clint. Clint nodded his head before wrapping his arms quickly around her small frame and holding her steady.

"And now, I will show you yours," Loki said before placing the scepter against her chest.

She fought like hell against it, the energy that was soon flowing into her mind was similar to the feeling she got from the tesseract, except she was not in control. Both her body and her mind fought against whatever the control was that was taking her over, but eventually Loki succeeded in claiming her as well. And she was soon an unwilling participant in helping Loki steal the tesseract, bringing ruin to the S.H.I.E.L.D base, and leaving behind many people she cared about behind in the rubble.
