Chapter Seventeen

Amongst the bustle of the attack on the Helicarrier, Evelyn wasn't quite sure where to find Bruce.  It wasn't until she overheard passing agents mention a monster in the hangar that held the jets, she was able to portal to an exact location.  She had never had the pleasure of meeting Dr.Bruce Banner, but she was very familiar with the green monster that accompanied him. It was common knowledge around New York that The Hulk was not a very welcome sight amongst the concert jungle full of delicate skyscrapers.

Alarms were blaring around her, and flashes of red lights were causing stars to filter through her already sensitive eyes. She could not only see the chaos around her, with the broken jets, hallowed out floor, and smears of blood that littered the ground. But she could feel it. She could feel the horror and fear floating through the air like a firecracker. The terror was palpable.

With slow and tentative steps, Evelyn walked across the broken ruble that lay among the ground. She kept her hands raised, poised for an attack as her foot came in contact with the demolished wing from a F-16. She was almost certain a large fist could be seen in the side, but she didn't let herself linger on it for too long.

As she crept around the nose of one of the only non-wrecked jets, a blonde figure suddenly appeared in front of her. Thor's blue eyes looked to her with worry.

"Lady Stark, what are you doing down here?" Thor asked, reaching out to grab her arm and drag her to safety. Evelyn was quick in ripping her arm from his grasp and walking past him.

"Do you want to die? Banner will certainly crush your mortal frame to bits!" Thor argued, he shrunk back as the roar from the Hulk was coming closer and closer.

"Haven't you learned yet, I'm not a normal human being." Evelyn answered, she raised her hand and created a portal to the center of her apartment building. "I can leave if I need to, but you need me here."

Thor looked hesitant in letting the tiny brunette join in on the fight. But he had watched her subdue Loki with ease, and that was not a very easy thing to do. He was also not certain why the human matched the power of the tesseract, but he was looking forward to learning more.  He eventually nodded his head after a few frustrated tugs at his golden locks.

"Very well. Banner is ripping us from the sky, can you portal him somewhere else?" Thor asked.

Evelyn pondered it for a second before nodding her head. She could send Bruce elsewhere until his own self conscious finally emerged from his large green frame, but she would need to send him somewhere desolate, and somewhere she could get back to easily to retrieve him.

"He won't go in my portal on his own, I need you to lure him through it." Evelyn whispered, peeking around the jet to see Hulk had landed thirty yards away from them, and was sniffing the air as if looking for his prey.

"I will do as you command, Lady Stark." Thor whispered, a smirk appearing on his beard covered face.

Evelyn rolled her eyes before saying, "Call me Eva."

Thor smiled and nodded his head before walking out in front of the Hulk. He kept his hammer in a defensive position, but otherwise looked trusting in Evelyn's ability to protect them. She could use an energy blast if needed, but she really didn't want to -- especially against a man that was technically a friendly.

"Hey Ugly!" Thor shouted at Hulk, who then turned towards him and growled loudly. He slammed his hands against the pavement, and quickened his run towards Thor who glanced readily at Evelyn.

Evelyn sighed before holding her hand out and creating a portal large enough to fit both Thor and the Hulk, but she panicked on thinking of appropriate locations to send them -- the pair of them went tumbling into the pacific ocean.

"Shit!" Evelyn exclaimed, watching the two fall through the portal and become enveloped by the  sea.

She widened the portal before reaching through and creating a new portal above  the water break that led to the Grand Canyon. Thor quickly flew through with the use of his hammer, and Hulk soon followed, looking completely aggravated and in need of something to smash.

Evelyn closed the portal to the ocean, which left her with the one for the Grand Canyon. Thor sprinted through, and Evelyn was able to close it at the last second before Hulk could follow.

A sopping wet Thor turned to Evelyn with annoyance in his eyes, and he flung droplets of water off of his hammer. Evelyn tried hard to keep it together, but the sight of the God of Thunder himself standing drenched in ocean water, seaweed stuck in his long hair, and a lobster clinging to his large heavy boots -- Evelyn let out a laugh so loud is echoed through every hall in the Helicarrier.

"I'm sorry," Evelyn said through giggles. "That truly was an accident!"

Thor glared ever so slightly before he joined Evelyn in a laugh that made her feel so much better than she did that morning.

"You really aren't like most humans." Thor chuckled, ripping the seaweed from his hair and kicking the lobster off his boot in disgust. "What are the extent of your powers?"

"What do you mean?" Evelyn asked, trying to slow her breathing to normal and wiping a tear that had fallen from her eyes from laughing too hard.

"The tesseract is not from Earth, have you tried using your abilities to venture outside of this realm?" Thor asked.

Evelyn knew the tesseract's history, and how it was on Asgard thousands of years before it came into possession of her father. It was probable that she had the ability to use her portals to go anywhere in the galaxy, she had never felt the desire to try though. She was just coming to terms with the power she possessed, and the damage she could do in the wrong hands, she didn't want to add other planets to that list.

"I'm sure it's possible." Evelyn said with a shrug as the pair walked towards the exit. There was nothing left for them to do in the hangar now that Bruce was taken care of.

"We should test that theory! I'd love to see if you can portal to Asgard!" Thor exclaimed with happiness evident on his face as he thought of his home.

"Maybe when your brother isn't trying to attack my home." Evelyn said through a shrug of her shoulders. Thor suddenly stopped and reached out to turn Evelyn to face her, his large palms holding her in place by her upper arms.

"I am so very sorry for the pain Loki has caused you. He's always been a trickster, but never in my life did I think he was capable of these things." Thor told her, his bright blue eyes holding the look of both certainty and distress, as he looked at the latest victim of the brother he thought dead.

Evelyn gave him a small and grateful smile, before patting his hand with hers. "It's not your fault, Thor. You can't control what your brother does, but you're here trying to stop it and that's what matters."

"You should take your own advice, Sweets." Evelyn whipped her head around to find her brother standing in the doorway to the staircase, his helmet had been removed and his suit was falling off of his body.

Evelyn furrowed her brow in confusion before stepping away from Thor to face Tony.

"Where's Banner?" Tony asked, looking around the empty hangar that housed only the three of them.

"The Grand Canyon." Evelyn responded, Tony smiled and gave her a knowing look.

"You finally get your trip you never got." Tony responded, a look playing across his face as he remembered  both a fond and bittersweet memory.

When Evelyn was a little girl, she had received a book on the best places to visit in the U.S. She became strangely infatuated with The Grand Canyon, even above the photos of pictures of Walt Disney World, and Hawaii -- places that would have appealed to a five year old girl.

She had asked her brother Tony what it was, and her big brother responded "That's from the meteor that killed all the dinosaurs. I think they're all buried under there."

He had winked at her lovingly, and spent the next year watching his little sister plan a trip to the giant hole in the ground -- her obsession with dinosaurs and The Grand Canyon being the most prominent thing in her life. Her parents were always busy, and Tony was back and forth from college, so Evelyn never got the trip she had desired for so long. And once her parents died it simply became unimportant.

"I can go anywhere in the world now. Isn't that ironic." Evelyn scoffed, creating a tiny portal in her hand to check on Bruce. He was still The Hulk, and running around the Canyon angrily and throwing errant rocks into the sky.

"I know you're blaming yourself, Eva." Tony told her, his metal suit clanging loudly as he walked closer to her.

"Steve tell you that?"

"He didn't have to! I know you!" Tony growled, placing his metal covered hands on her shoulders. "None of this is your fault! And you're trying to fix things now, which is all that matters."

Evelyn blinked back tears before throwing her arms around her brothers shoulders. She grunted as she came in contact with his suit, the metal slightly knocking the air from her chest. Tony's arms immediately encased her, gently placing his hands on the small of her back.

"You owe me a suit, you know." Tony whispered, causing Evelyn to snort into his ear.

"We can start our Iron Legion project when this is all over." Evelyn mumbled, pulling away from Tony to look into his chocolate brown eyes. Evelyn had once asked Tony why they had different eye colors even though they were siblings, Tony's answer was, 'I'm full of shit up to my eyeballs.' For a seven year old girl she took it literally, it wasn't until she was a teenager that she realized Tony had been drunk off his ass and had no idea what he was talking about.

"Head to the lab, I can rig your suit to last another day at least." Evelyn told him, glancing down at the beaten and scuffed red and yellow suit.

"I have a better idea, portal me to my lab at the tower. I've got something I can use."

Evelyn shrugged before creating a body sized portal, Tony quickly ran through before hollering back at her, "Come get me in twenty!"

With a roll of her eyes Evelyn closed the portal with a wave of her fingers. She placed her hands on her hips before glancing back at Thor who was tossing his hammer into the air.

"Want to go see if anyone needs help?" Evelyn asked. Thor caught the hammer before pointing it in the direction of the staircase.

"Lead the way." He said, a grin plastering itself onto his face like a child who had just gotten a puppy for Christmas. Evelyn chuckled and eventually the pair found their way back to the control room, without finding anyone else in need of help.
