Chapter Nine

Evelyn's screams could be heard all the way down the hallway, her voice echoing off the concrete walls of the busy hospital. She had been screaming for hours, and neither the doctors, Steve, or Pepper who had all been in and out of the room, could help her. Steve was in almost physical pain as he listened to his friend scream herself hoarse.

She was still asleep, but it was acutely aware to everyone that her mind was definitely awake.

"Maybe you should head home, Steve." Pepper told him. "I'll call you if anything changes."

"I'm not leaving her." Steve mumbled, resting his head between his hands. He would never forgive himself if he left the hospital and something happened to her. But something did happen to her, just like it happened to Bucky, and he couldn't do anything to help either of them.

Pepper sighed and sat down on the couch beside him, giving his shoulder a gentle squeeze. "Eva told me you two had gotten close. I don't know you very well but she seems to be a lot happier with you in her life."

"Were like two jigsaw puzzles." Steve whispered.

"What was that?" Pepper asked, not hearing him. Steve just smiled softly and shook his head.

"Where's Tony?" Asked Steve, changing the subject. He had yet to meet the eldest Stark sibling, as the two never seemed to be in the room at the same time. Tony appeared to the hospital once while Steve was in the cafeteria getting coffee, and in that time he scared away Nick Fury and screamed at the doctors about checking for gamma radiation. This was all information he had gotten from Pepper, but since then Tony had yet to show his face again.

Evelyn's screams turned to whimpers, and soon she was whispering something that pulled both Steve and Pepper to practically lay on top of her to hear what she was saying.

"He's coming. He has the tesseract. He's going to kill us all." She kept whispering the same thing for five minutes before she stopped.

"I've got to call Tony." Said Pepper. "Eva's talking nonsense."

Steve frowned at Pepper before glancing down to see small blue wisps floating in-between Evelyn's fingertips. "Wait," Said Steve, motioning for Pepper to look at what he had discovered.

Pepper's eyes went wide before she canceled the phone call to Tony. "I'm calling Director Fury. We need to know if S.H.I.E.L.D still has possession of the tesseract."

Evelyn's green eyes slowly fluttered open, gaining a fantastic view of the white hospital ceiling. A sharp pain shot  through her skull, causing her to quickly cradle her head in her hands. She was quick to pull the hands away from her head when she noticed the abnormal color floating through her fingertips.

"What the hell?" She whispered, her throat burning fiercely as she spoke.

"Eva!" Someone exclaimed, she looked up to see Steve coming into the room, drying his hands on a paper towel. "Thank God." He said, rushing over to pull her quickly into his arms.

"My hands are blue, Steve." Evelyn mumbled, staring at her hands that barely wrapped around Steve's large frame.

Steve pulled away and held her at arms length. "I know. They've been glowing like that for a few days now. "

She barely remembered why she was in the hospital in the first place, but it wasn't long before all the memories came flooding back to her. The tesseract. The explosion. The foreign beings in space. The army. Evelyn started panicking when she thought about what was coming.

"Steve, where's Tony? Where's Fury? Something's coming, and everyone is in danger!"

"Calm down, Eva. Everyone is okay. Pepper talked to Fury last night and the tesseract is still safe.  As for Tony I haven't seen him since you've been here, we can't seem to be here at the same time." Steve  said answering her various questions.

Evelyn frowned and ran her tingling blue fingers through her hair, she had this terrible feeling housing itself in the pit of her stomach and she knew something dangerous was coming, she just didn't know what.

"I need to see the cube again. I need to figure out what the tesseract is doing." Evelyn said, her eyes not meeting Steve.

"You are not going near that thing again, Eva. We aren't just going to let you waltz up to the tesseract again after what happened to you!" Steve exclaimed.

"An energy surge is more than likely what happened. The tesseract is very unstable, but I know what to look for now."

"The answers still no. Nobody is going to let you anywhere near it after what happened." Steve told her.

Evelyn rolled her eyes and leaned back onto the white lumpy hospital pillow. It didn't really matter if anyone told her she couldn't see the tesseract again, she'd easily figure out a way to get inside without anyone knowing.

"I need to know what the hell is happening to me, Steve. " Evelyn whispered, looking at the blue dancing through her fingertips. "I saw something when I was unconscious. Something unnatural, and this feeling of dread is not leaving my body."

Steve reached forward and grabbed her hands in his, letting his fingers gently stroke the unnatural color that surrounded them. "We'll figure out what's going on, Eva. Together."

"I'm glad you aren't worried if this is contagious." Evelyn joked, watching Steve observe her hands. He smiled gently before holding them up close to his face.

"Maybe you're turning alien on me?" He suggested, earning a swat from Evelyn.

"Does it hurt?" Steve asked, all jokes pushed aside.

Evelyn shook her head. "Not at all. Just feels like an extension to my body."

"Maybe Tony can help?" Steve suggested.

Evelyn shrugged her shoulders, "Maybe." She whispered. She didn't want to worry Steve and tell him  that the effects from the blast were causing an unnatural power to course through her body, she felt different in a way that was inexplainable to anyone who wasn't experiencing it themselves. But what scared her the most -- was that she liked the feeling, she really really liked it.

Steve was asleep in the cot that resided in the corner of the room, Evelyn protested against him staying the night, the bags were very prominent under his bright blue eyes, but he would not leave her side. She was both grateful and annoyed at his everlasting loyalty.

Evelyn had been asleep for a week, so when the sun set and the hospital grew quiet it left Evelyn awake with nothing but her forever active mind. The doctors told her there was no evidence that pointed towards a concussion, but due to her being in a coma for a time they wanted to keep her for observation. And none of the doctors and nurses acknowledged her questions about her glowing blue hands. Which left her to sit and wonder on her own.

She grew bored and anxious sitting in the bed with nothing but the small tv to entertain her. Nothing was on this late at night, so she left it off. She wished hard she was in her own apartment, with her large book and movie collection that could ease her restlessness.

She could practically envision herself laying on her comfortable couch, one of her favorite books in her hands, and the twinkling of the bright lights of New York City dancing in the background.

She moved her hands to adjust the sheet on the bed when she noticed what was happening to her. "What?" she whispered. Because looking down she no longer saw just the blue surrounding her hands, she saw her apartment. It was like a small television had appeared between her hands and she was an audience to her own home.

She took one of her hands and pushed it through the opening, gasping as her hand disappeared into the scene in front of her. She waved it around a bit, feeling the coolness of the air conditioning that was running in her apartment.

"Steve!" She called out to her friend. He groaned before rolling onto his back.

"Steve, Wake up!" Evelyn yelled across the room. She went to move her hands, to try and show Steve what was happening to her, but a large blast shot out of her hands, blowing a hole through the wall of the hospital.

Steve rolled off the cot and onto the floor, covering his head in his hands. Evelyn screamed as she looked at the new window that she had created in the room. She felt inhuman, like a visitor in her own body as these new discoveries were happening to her all at once.

The fire alarm started to blare, causing the sprinklers in the room to trigger and it wasn't long before Evelyn was sopping wet.

"Eva," Steve coughed, waving his hand through the small amount of smoke that surrounded them. "Are you alright?" He asked.

Evelyn was still trembling, looking between her hands and the damage she caused to the room.

"Eva, you're shaking." Said Steve, placing his hands tenderly on her arms. She finally glanced up at him, with tears rolling down her cheeks.

"What is wrong with me?" She whimpered. It wasn't long ago the power that flowed through her she was very accepting of. That was before she saw the damage she could truly do. It was like she was back in Afghanistan, and she was looking at the aftermath of what Stark Industries weapons could really do.

"Nothing is wrong with you Eva!" Steve exclaimed, pulling her quickly into his arms. "We are going to figure out what is happening with you, I promise."

Evelyn wanted to believe Steve, God she wanted to believe that they would figure out what was happening to her. Steve might have caught on to how terrified she was, but he wasn't the only one. Because Evelyn could see the war behind his eyes breaking through, and she felt every shudder of his body as he held her close.
