Doubts About The Change

3rd Person P.O.V.

Levi watched as every new Scout trained with Hanji first. Like always, not a single person caught his eye. None of them ever did. But Erd, Oluo, Petra, Gunther, they all gained his trust and respect, then they went and died on him.

Then Elise goes off on a suicidal journey.

Levi felt truly alone.

Chromatic sensed Levi's loneliness, and nuzzled his cheek lovingly. Alas, it was short lived for Chromatic had a long journey back to Elise. He needed to leave, and Levi watched with a sad feeling filling his small heart. Chrome flew past the mountains of the Alhana (#madeupmountainname) and liked down over the abandoned fields of wall Maria.

"Hello Chrome," Elise smiled as she lifted her graceful arm to the bird. "Any new letters?" He picked at the small crumpled note on his back impatiently. She untied it, and unfolded the crumpled paper where crude words were written.

Elise,

Don't worry about us, if you don't come back in one piece, I'll kill you myself. Because I still have one thing that is very important to tell you, not over letters though.

- Levi Rivalle.

She couldn't help but smile happily at the letter. He cared; true it was very deep down, but still. It was there. So far, Elise has only come close to one titan in Wall Maria, and by that time tomorrow, she'll be outside the walls.

Where fields of snow awaited her.

Liquid made of fire,

And the strange salt lakes the size of a million walls.

She now kicked Allegro's sides softly, and the horse continued on the path towards the truth.

"Erwin." Levi caught his attention before tossing Elise's letter onto his desk. Erwin hurriedly read as Levi paced about.

"Well, what's wrong? She seems to be in top condition for taking on the Titans outside the walls." Erwin furrowed his large eyebrows.

"But is it the right thing..?" Levi asked cautiously, "no one ever thought, not for one moment, that long ago, many humans were these Titan Shifters?"

"What are you getting at?" Levi slammed his hands down into the desk.

"What was our past?!? This place, the walls,.."

"I admit, while the walls have kept us safe, it's kept us isolated from how big this world really is. Maybe Elise can suppress our thirst for knowledge." Erwin thought. Why did the world change to this? At what point was humanity fodder?

"Richard would know the answer to an age old question like this." Erwin chuckled at the thought of his own squad leader. "He always kept telling me everything was explained in the piano." Levi simply rolled his eyes.
The old man to him was crazy and unpredictable, but by the time the fallout appeared, her remained victorious. Their thoughts were interrupted by a shushing from outside the doors.
Levi, to his boiling point, swing the door open hastily, and two girls toppled into the room. One being the rude blonde cadet from the other day.

"Welcome, ladies." Erwin casually greeted the two. "My, only been here two days and you've already pissed off my corporal. Taking the beaten path, are we?"

"N-No S-Si-r!!" They both shivered under Levi's gaze. Everyone did. Only Mikasa, Elise, Hanji, Erwin,

And Logan,

Didn't seem to mind his demonic stare.

"It's just, some of the Garrison Regiment are here to speak with you two!" Squaking stopped the two ladies talk and all attention went to the window where Chromatic was spazzing out.

"Chrome!!" Levi hissed as the bird scratched him accidentally. Chrome immediately landed on Erwin's desk, and began to jump about in an unpredictable pattern. They locked the bird in the study and hurried to greet the guests.

But Levi had this bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. It was a gift he had when he sensed danger. Why would Chromatic return to them so early? It had only been about three days tops since he took off towards Elise.

"Ah Pyxis," Erwin greeted the wrinkled and bald man with a handshake. But there was no sly smirk on the old man's face today, only one of dark aura.

"I think I'd be best if we sit down to say this." He advised both Levi and Erwin. "And bring Yeager, Ackerman, and Arlett with you."

------------

The five had sat together in one of the many living rooms of the Scout Regiment's HQ. Eren and Mikasa were holding hands while Armin writhed his own in anticipation. Pyxis sat across from them, both Levi and Erwin at his sides.

"I called you all here, to talk to you about Elise." He started.

"Yeah, is she okay?" Eren blurted out.

"And when is she due back?" Mikasa followed up. He didn't answer, but the sad look on his face only grew.

"I'm so sorry, for all of you." He finally said once everyone had quieted down. Another one of his men walked closer, something elongated cradled in his arms under a piece of cloth. Eren's face became pale, and the only support he was drawing off was Mikasa's firm grip on his own hand.

"What are you saying?" Levi asked, hoping to God Pyxis wouldn't say the words he thought. Erwin nodded; seeming to get the point, and left without another word.

"I'm sorry, but Elise Frost has just been killed on the side of Wall Maria."

The words hit Levi like the impact of a bullet. The friend he had saved, trained with, made sarcastic remarks at,

Was now dead and possibly in the stomach of a titan. He wrenched the object from the Garrison Regiment's arms and hastily clawed at the cloth.

There lay Elise's left arm. In Levi's own hands.

Eren gasped and raced out of the room at break neck speed. Mikasa followed soon after. Armin was left to break down crying in the room by himself. Their friend; the one who was more prepared to kill Titans than anyone else in humanity, was now dead.

And nothing could heal the blow made to Levi, never again.
