Chapter 8: Side Effects Suck

(Quick friendly reminder: this story is not suitable for all audiences. Lots of gore and dark themes ahead. I really don't want to accidentally trigger someone or make them uncomfortable. I write to make people happy, but the tone of this story calls for elements like this. If you'd like something fluffy, I have fluffier 11th story that you can find in my works {sorry that sounds super self promote-y}. All that aside, let's continue with the story!)

You nearly hit your head against the door as the Doctor dragged you out of the strange bedroom. So, off to a great start.

You saw the woman's form on the floor as her head wiped toward you both, who were now sprinting down the platform. She had bags under her eyes, but she was beautiful. A little older than you. She could've easily distracted you if you weren't already whipping past her.

"Hey! Stop!" She called after you as the Doctor and you rounded the corner, bounding out of the creepy area and towards the exit.

"Please tell me you know which way to go!" You yelled ahead.

"Uhh, mostly!"

"Oh lovely! An alien time traveler who doesn't even know where he's going! Exactly what I need right now!"

"Shut up!" He yelled, his tone saying it should've been obvious you shouldn't have been talking.

"C'mon Doc, hit me with a plan! We need a way out!"

"Well I was going to say just run until we find something but something tells me you won't like that idea!"

"Obviously not!" You began. "I'm gonna die here, aren't I?! I'm gonna die in a nasty sewer, far from home, with a crazy old man I've just met!"

"There, there, look!" He said pointing ahead to a new door.

This one was skinny and tall, with a suspicious puddle underneath it.

You and the Doctor skidded to a halt as he fumbled with his screwdriver.

"Hello~?" Called the girl. She was far away, but getting closer, quick.

"Doctor...!" You urged him eagerly.

"I know I know, give me a minute!"

He tried to sonic the door several times before there was the sound of a lock opening. The door was swung open to reveal a pitch black room, too dark to tell its size or what was in it.

"Well get in!" He yelled.

With an uneasy whine you stumbled into the dark room, Doc only a few steps behind you. He slammed the door shut, hearing it lock automatically.

The sounds outside the door were muffled. "She won't find us here," he said softly. He sounded like he was trying to convince himself more than he was you.

"Where are we?"

You felt his screwdriver being pushed into your hands. "Here. It's important you learn how to use it. Point and think."

You couldn't see his face in the darkness, but he sounded... tense.

Following his instructions, you held up the Sonic and thought about an office light. Sure enough, the green light emitting from the Sonic brightened, filling up the room. Or- the closet.

You wished you hadn't seen what was in there.

Bodies. Three deformed, human, dead bodies, hug up on meat hooks. All three had machinery stuffed into various places. Around their waists, replacing their hands, covering eyes. It was the same machinery from the girl's "lab".

These were where all the blood had come from. These were the rejects. And with a space the size of a janitors closet, it was impossible to ignore the rancid smell, and even harder now that you knew it's source.

"Oh my God...," You whispered, shrinking back against the Doctor.

As if on instinct, he wrapped a protective arm around your shoulder and held you against his chest, almost glaring at the bodies, as if they had offended him.

"Do we have to stay here?" You could imagine how scared you sounded.

"We can't leave yet. Just a few more minutes." He gently took the screwdriver from you, casting shadows off the bodies, and scanned the door, refusing to let you go.

You couldn't take your eyes off them. Two girls and a man. Two of them were blonde, and the last man was ginger, but their hair had begun falling off of their decaying heads a while ago. Only the girl's eyes were frozen open, but the whites of them had turned bloodshot and red, and her once bright green eyes had faded to almost white. One of the boy's mouth hung open, and there were dried blood cheeks on his chin. They were rotting, and the stench was two seconds away from driving you insane. Luckily for you, the Doctor had been scanning for the girl on the other side of the door, waiting for the signature to fade away- for her to leave.

"Come on. It's okay now."

Then he let his hand slide down to yours, using the other to push the heavy door open.

When you two were back in the hall, the Doctor locked the closet door behind him as a shiver went down your spine. You shook your head like a wet dog (ignoring the slight headache the action gave you) and glanced warily down both ends of the curved corridor.

The Doctor froze next to you and straightened, tucking his screwdriver in the inside pocket of his purple jacket.

"Is she gone?" You glanced up at his ever-grumpy face. "F-For good?"

"... Probably not. Let's see if we can't get out of this sewer." He said the word like it was an insult. You nodded.

It took the Doctor and you longer than comfortable to leave the stuffy tunnels. And you didn't exit the way you'd entered. But either way, as you looked up at the Doctor, him being ahead of you on the ladder he'd dubbed the way out, you were itching for the light of day.

When he reached the wooden trap door that lead to the surface, he wrapped one arm around a rung to balance himself while his other forearm pressed against the door above his head and pushed. After three solid shoves, the hatch swung up, and you had to lean to the side to see past him at the stars twinkling back at you. It was nighttime already.

As you moved up the space he'd left behind when he'd climbed onto the grass, you raised as eyebrow as he stood tall, looking around curiously at the surroundings.

"Doc? What is it?"

"A town, I believe."

As you pushed yourself out of the sewers  with no help from the Doctor, you gazed around. You both were in an alley, the end of which the Doctor was already at, looking around the corners of the buildings on either side of you at the candlelit street ahead. You could hear a poorly made violin or fiddle being played in the almost shack next to you, with loud drunken laughter over lapping it. Other than that, the street itself was quiet, a few hushed and giggling voices could be heard however.

You stalked up behind him, and leaned past him, looking out at the golden lit town center.

There was an small circular deck sort of area with buildings around it, and a dirt road circling past it, before continuing to stretch to the rest of the town.. There were crappy lampposts at every door with candles protected by glass on their sides.

You found the source of the giggling. There was a busty girl chatting up the blacksmith across the street, and a couple of men laughing together with empty mugs, draped around in front of the tavern, the loud building next to you.

"Where are we?"

"What are you, blind? It's the town square! State of the art, nicest spot in town."

You raised your eyebrows and looked back out over the area.

"Doesn't look like it..."

"Well easy for you to say," he paused to flick you in the head. "You have street cleaners and concrete where you're from, don't you?"

You scowled at him and rubbed your head. Warily, you followed his gaze back to the town square. "Now what do we do?" You asked pathetically.

"Talk to people, I suppose. Thirsty?"

You bushed your eyebrows together warily. "Not really...."

He rolled his eyes heavily, and after flicking you on your head again, he grabbed your hand and dragged you past the drunken men and into the lively bar.

(Hey guys! So this is a little bit shorter than usual but I figured since I was a little stuck I might as well just throw it at you guys XD. Seriously it's like midnight and I just decided "I'm gonna publish this now, why make 'em wait?". So yeah, let me know if you guys have any theories about where this could be going and I might steal the idea XD. I have a current plan but I'm not sure if I like it very much :/.
I also wanted to thank you guys so much for the comments and support! It means a lot to know there's someone on the other end, so sorry these tiny parts take me forever '^u^ heh.
I'm also thinking about starting a tenth doctor fan fic similar to this one in that it would be longer and I'd hardly ever update it XD But I'll keep you guys updated :D
Love you!
