Part Five
5.
It would be at Melvin's home that he would figure certain things out about Dan such as, to begin with, the level of the whole thing with Dan's sensitivity to light. Melvin would spend quite an amount of time wondering as to what the hell he has got himself into though he also thought 'what the hell? What else would I have to do if I wasn't bringing an alien home with me? He seems polite and besides if he were planning to kill me, I am sure he would have done that by now.'
Melvin had come to a particular point where he was feeling quite tired. With all that has happened it might be thought that sleep would be something that might not come so easily anytime soon, though at that, it has taken it out of him too. He was also feeling calm enough with the situation he has found himself in, despite having had a moment of questioning his own sanity, with which he would be happy enough with showing Dan to a room before heading to bed himself. This is the right thing to do, the human thing to do.
It is a bit of a transition given the initial level of shock and the shattering of nerves that came with it, still, there is a certain something ... that certain sense that destiny has come calling. This was meant to happen, and it was meant to happen to him.
The morning came and Melvin made his way downstairs while still being half asleep and also being completely oblivious as to his encounter the previous evening though he would soon get quite the reminder. Melvin walked into the darkness of his living room. With the fact that it was morning and a bright morning at that, Melvin didn't react to the darkness or even react to it other than turn on a light and that would bad news.
A very loud screech or shriek sounded, and it made the large glass mirror over the fireplace crack in more than one part. Not only was Dan making this noise, but he also quickly climbed up the wall and over to a corner of the ceiling as if that very spot provided some sort of protection. It didn't, and the movement was more instinctual than anything else.
All the light bulbs that were hanging just off the ceiling in the center of the room would also more than just crack but actually shatter, returning the room to its previous level of darkness. It was safe to say that Melvin was most definitely awake at this point and no longer half asleep, as it was also safe to say that Dan too was awake and not in the room with which he had been shown to.
The events of the previous night retuned with a whoosh. It was real. It is ... real.
'So, what happened last night actually happened last night and it was not a dream or even a nightmare' spoke Melvin removing his hands from his ears and shaking his head quickly, more to make sure everything was still working other than anything else.
With the living room once more being kinda darkish and while being more than calm given the current circumstances, Melvin would look around before speaking once again.
'Dan? I take it that you are in here, so where the hell are you?'
'Sorry about that' responded the deep echoing voice from right where Dan had climbed to, 'I've caused damage to your home ... I am up here by the way.'
'Up where?' would be the next question though Melvin would soon see, or at least see as well as he could, where Dan had got to. 'What are you doing up there? And how the heck are you able to do that?'
'Oh, it is just one of my other Humari abilities, I do not know what a spider is though I have been referred to as a Humanoid spider before ... how are your ears?'
'They are fine, ringing slightly but they are fine, and it is I who should be apologising to you; I was half asleep and had almost completely forgotten about last night. For a moment I actually did think that it had just been some sort of dream or something similar.'
Dan came down and approached Melvin.
'I am fine, you are fine, I will do my best to clean up a bit here. I really do appreciate you taking me into your home for the night especially with what I am and how we met.'
'So, what now?' asked Melvin.
'You have done enough for me, I do not want to be a burden, once it gets dark, I will be on my way.'
'No, no, you are welcome to stay. I have a large house and I live alone. It would actually be nice to have some company; all be it somewhat alien.' Melvin laughed a short laugh as he once again questioned his own sanity. 'Besides ... you have nowhere to go, I would presume. I do have a couple of questions though.'
'Sure, ask away.'
'Last night when we talked out on that road, you seemed surprised to be on Earth and surprised by the date, is there something I should know?'
'Let's just say I am not where or when I know I should be. A human friend of mine was trying out a new transport device with which he created. It was or is, or I should say will be very much an experimental device. I'd been through it once without much trouble and with my second time through, something must have gone really wrong; it left me out on that road where we met. I really do not know what I would have done with myself if you had not come along.'
'Will there be anyone coming to find you?'
'I don't see how. Even though I have travelled through time and space, it was accidental. We are no more capable of using time to our advantage in the future as you are here in the present.'
'Well, I do not know how well you are accepted in that future and to be quite honest, it will be a very difficult thing to be accepted on this world at this or any other particular time up to now.'
'I have kind of gathered that.'
'So, for the time being at least, it would be a good idea for you to keep yourself hidden.'
'I would not disagree with that logic.'
'What is that behind you?' Melvin asks Dan.
Dan turns a one eighty and has a look around, doesn't see anything out of the ordinary so he turns back to face Melvin.
'What is what?'
'For a moment there I was sure I saw something circular moving behind you and to your right though I can't see it now. It was like it was spinning.'
'I didn't see anything.'
'I am probably seeing things now; you're not a figment of my imagination by any chance.'
'No, I am very real, I assure you. Speaking of spinning ... I'm a little dizzy. If it's alright with you, I may just go rest a while.'
'Sure thing Dan. You do what you need to do ...'
Dizzy huh? Understandable, given all that is.
