Losing Someone Close
Lighting flashed and thunder boomed in the dark, grey sky. Droplets of rain pitter-pattered across the roof of the tower. Damian sat on the edge of the roof, hair soaked, and his knees brought up to his chest. His head rested on his folded arms that were on top of his knees. Damian groaned as yet another warm tear rolled down his cheek. He was still very upset. Very broken. Very vulnerable. He didn't want anyone to see him crying because they would think that he was weak. But he couldn't believe what had happened. The news he had received not too long ago had broke his heart, his spirit. How could he have let this happen? He wished he could have been there to stop it. If only he had been there. He had lost someone that he truly cared about.
He glared at no one in particular.. "I swear, I will get revenge. I will kill you Joker!" Damian shouted between tears.
Suddenly the doors that led to the roof swung open. A shadow covered him as it walked over towards him. He didn't even bother to turn around and see who it was. He quickly wiped away his tears. He really didn't want anyone to see him like this. Not like this. He was a mess. He closed his eyes tightly as the dark figure sat down next to him.
"Are you ok?" the figure asked.
"Yes, witch girl. I'm fine," he chuckled sadly. Same old Raven. Damian would never tell her, but he'd always admired the way she was constantly thinking about others before herself.
"Really? Because you don't seem fine." Raven sighed and took a seat next to him. She turned her head so that she could meet his captivating green eyes.
He turned away so he wouldn't have to meet her worried stare.
"Yes, Raven. I'm going to be okay, " he lied. He knew he wasn't.
"So, why does it look like you've been crying?" Raven asked.
"I wasn't. I- um. Just had something in my eye," he lied.
"Damian, you're a terrible liar. Please, just tell me what's bothering you. I want to be able to help you," she said giving him a sympathetic look.
He sighed, knowing that she was an empath and that she wasn't going to give up until he told her what was wrong.
"It's my father. He died yesterday," he tried to continue as another tear threatened to fall down his cheek.
Raven placed a hand on his shoulder. He shivered under her comforting touch, but he continued anyway.
"He was killed in battle last night with the joker," he said softly. Raven sat quietly and nodded her head for him to continue.
"He told me he had to go on this mission. He told me he would be fine on his own. Why did I let him go off by himself?" Damian buried his face in his hands.
"Damian it isn't your faul-" Raven began.
"Yes it is! I knew he was already hurt Raven. He was already injured. I knew that. I tried to tell him that he should take a break, but did he listen? No! The guy was way too stubborn for his own good. Sure, sometimes I might have found him a bit annoying, but Raven he's my father," he paused and took a deep breath, "I miss him." he said as tears rolled down his cheeks again.
Raven wrapped her arms around him tightly. "It's going to be ok, Damian. I know you miss him. I miss him too. I also know that he may not have said it too often, but he's very proud of you Damian." she said sincerely.
He returned her embrace. "Raven? How am I ever going to move on?" he asked after a couple of minutes of silence.
"I don't know. But what I do know is that until you are ready to move on...I'll be there to help you get through this. Every step of the way. I promise," she said, smiling.
He gave her a sad smile in return. He didn't know how Raven did it, but she had always been able to lighten his mood whenever he was either sad or angry.
"Thank you," he said.
"For what?" she asked curiously.
"For being Raven." he stated simply.
She smiled lightly at his words. For a while they both sat there in each others embrace. The rain was still pouring down and they were both soaked, but they didn't mind. As long as they still had each other.
