The Sound of Silence
Bruce entered the small hospital room that Mercury was placed in, allowing his son to lean on him as he hobbled in. Damian instantly hobbled over and sat on the hospital bed as Mercury slept, the steady beating of her heart shown by the heart monitor. Her neck was covered in one dark bruise, and the scars on her face stood out on her pale skin. Her left leg was set in a tight brace, as was her right arm. Her chest bulged slightly with the bandages wrapped around it.
" Mercury," Damian whispered in shock, leaning forward to run his fingers through her hair.
The girl stirred slightly, her one eye blinked open slowly to look up at Damian.
She opened her mouth and for a moment looked happy, before a frown graced her face. Opening her mouth a second time she managed to emit a small whimpering noise that cut off quickly.
Now her eye was wide with panic and the heart monitor spiked as she freaked out.
" Mercury! Mercury calm down, you're going to be okay," Damian said forcefully, gazing at her tentatively, and taking her uninjured hand in his.
She gazes at him with uncertainty and fear in her gaze. She saw Bruce standing there with Damian and once again tried to talk, but to no avail.
Bruce felt as though his heart was breaking in two, the bright young girl who'd lit up his household the first night he'd met her was damaged.
" Mercury, the explosion you were in, it caused rubble to fall on you, and your voice box was severely damaged. The doctors don't think you'll be able to talk. I know it's hard to come to terms with but you'll be okay," Bruce said gently, hoping she wouldn't freak out again, but he had to tell her.
Mercury's gaze hardened from her fear in to a gaze that could only be described as stoic, before smiling slightly at Damian. She pointed to him and then held a thumbs up.
Damian got the message and gently leant forward and kissed her swiftly.
" Yeah I'm okay, thanks to you shielding me. And you'll be okay too, we will work through this together!" Damian murmured lovingly, gazing at his beautiful girlfriend.
Bruce smiled broadly at the young lovers and turned to open the door for a young male doctor, who'd performed surgery on Mercury's severely broken limbs.
" Hey there Mercury, I'm Doctor Matthews. I think it's time for you and Damian to get some rest now, you've had quite an ordeal. Just let me change over your IV and fluids first," the doctor said brightly.
Mercury smiled slightly at him, but her smile widened when two people came bursting through the door to her room. An immensely tall and strong man with dark brown hair and black glasses, followed by a small, petit woman who was remarkably pretty.
" Mercury! We couldn't get here any sooner baby, we are so sorry," The woman sobbed and she rushed over and stood beside Dr Matthews, worry etched on her face.
Bruce was a little confused but when the man turned to face him, and he ad to look up to see the man's face since he was at least a head taller, he found out who they were.
" Hi, we are Mercury's parents. Our astronomy lecture we gave was in Central City and we couldn't get back any quicker. Thanks for looking in on her Mr................" The man said quickly, shaking Bruce's hand with a grip that'd make Superman jealous.
" Wayne, I'm Bruce Wayne, Damian's father," Bruce finished for him.
" Oh, you're the father of the boy our daughter had been daydreaming about all the time. Damian's a lovely boy and I'm glad to see he's going to be okay after that explosion. Would you mind filling me in on what happened?" Mr Faith inquired hopefully, his eyes straying to Mercury every now and then, who was being given a goodnight kiss by Damian as she drifted off to sleep.
" We aren't sure what exactly happened, but whatever it was almost killed many of the kids present at the time. It's a shear miracle that Mercury survived! I'm sure you've heard what her condition s over the phone and I assure you that Damian and I will always be here if you need her to stay with us after school while attending a long lecture or anything," Bruce offered genuinely, liking the giant of a man.
Mr Faith nodded appreciatively and went to embrace his wife who was still distraught by the whole matter, and stood crying silently in front of Mercury's bed.
Damian didn't leave Mercury's room for anything other than sleep until he was discharged. Even then he came by every day on his crutches since he couldn't be Robin til he was better. He was ecstatic when Mercury managed to say one word. Dami. But Dr Matthews let him know privately that Mercury would most likely only ever be able to say one word every now and then since her damaged voice box wouldn't allow for much more.
Mercury was adjusting though, and generally was taking the news surprisingly well.
She was also healing quickly, and the medical staff were still perplexed as to how she survived the weight of the rubble on her, but in any case, she'd lived, and that was enough. In the mean time, Damian was helping Mercury learn sign language so that she could communicate well. It was no surprise that the first phrase they bought learnt to sign was
' I love you'.
