Chapter 1 ~Annabeth~
"We're moving!"
My heart just about stopped.
"Again? We just got here! I'm just now starting to get settled in."
My mom looked at me with a stormy expression in her grey eyes.
"Annabeth, please. We go through this every time. I know you don't like it, but I was offered a really good job at a big hospital in Manhattan."
"Manhattan?!" I screeched. Of all places, they had to pick the most densely populated city.
"Arguing won't help," my dad said. "The tickets are already bought. We leave in two weeks."
My heart sank. I sighed in resignation. Well, no point in putting it off forever. I picked up my iPhone, a gift from my grandparents just a few days ago, and dialed my best friend Katie Gardner.
"Hey Annabeth. What's up?"
Tears welled up in my eyes. "Katie, I'm moving. Again," I said, the tears welling in my eyes, and my voice cracking.
"Really? Where to?" Katie asked, shock clear in her voice.
"Manhattan," I said, the tears flowing freely down my cheeks.
"You're kidding. You're not really moving to Manhattan, are you?" Katie said in disbelief.
"Yeah," I said. "My mom was offered a job at a hospital there. We're leaving in two weeks."
"I'm gonna pick up you and Nyssa and we're going to the mall. I don't care what we do, as long as we're together." Nyssa was my other best friend. Katie, Nyssa, and I were a trio. We did everything together. I could always count on them to be there when I needed them most.
"Ok." It was all I could manage.
"I'll be there in ten. Be ready." Then she hung up.
I looked around my room, with all my band posters, and Poloroid pictures strung up on my wall. My eyes were flooded with a fresh set of tears as I imagined losing my friends.
I jumped when my dad knocked on my door.
"Katie and Nyssa are here," he said poking his head in my room. I guess I lost track of time.
I nodded and wiped my eyes.
"Thanks, I'll be right down."
I went to my desk, grabbed my backpack, portable speaker, and phone. I put my phone and the speaker in my backpack while walking downstairs.
I barely made it to the bottom step when Nyssa's strong arms wrapped around me.
"Katie told me,"she said, sparing me from having to say anything. "I'm so sorry."
She pulled away, and dragged me out the door, Katie not far behind.
"I don't know when we'll be back, but we'll try for before sunset," I yelled at my dad as we ran for the car.
We piled in, and Katie started driving. Nyssa sprawled out in her normal position in the back seat, while I pulled out my speaker and phone.
"Nice phone," I hear from the back seat. I look back and see Nyssa grinning. "Let's get some beats going!"
I had to be grinning like a maniac by now, but I didn't care. These were my girls. I could be myself around them.
While my speaker connected to my phone, I browsed through my phone, and one song in particular caught my eye. I looked back at Nyssa and grinned.
"Lemme guess. I'm gonna like this?" She winked, and I nodded, still wearing my maniac grin.
I pressed play, and Marshmello's Rescue Me, feat. ADTR began playing.
"Never been saved, but I've never come closer."
"Another year down, and another year older"
"A million fresh starts, what I needed was closure, yeah"
"I lost who I was, but I found my composure, yeah"
"Here it comes!" I yelled. "The best part!"
"When I found you, I found me"
"Nothing around far as I could see"
"You were the current that carried me"
"When I found you, I found me"
"Locked in the sands only you could read"
"My S.O.S. yeah you rescued me"
"Rescued me"
The rest of the song passed by in a blur. Before I knew it, we were back at my house. I sat in the car for a little longer, not wanting to leave the comfortable embrace of friendship.
