Russia gets fiercely protective when his sisters/friends get hurt. No one -- and I mean no one -- is allowed to get near him as he hoists his wounded partner-in-arms on his back and fall back to safety. In the instances of war, he obviously needs to go back to fight, so he gives the wounded ally to another trusted ally to jump back in.

He already lost them at least once, he's not willing to lose them again.
