CHAPTER 9: IN NEED OF A REMEDY

LIA'S POV

I don't know what really woke me up. Natagpuan ko na lang ang sarili ko na unti-unting binubuksan ang mabibigat na talukap ng mga mata ko. I feel disoriented and I can't quite absorb what I'm seeing yet but I know I had a long sleep. Dala na lang siguro marahil nang mga nangyari kaya tila nag shut down ang buong sistema ko para bigyan ako ng tiyansa na makapagpahinga.

Sa isipin na iyon ay napabalikwas ako ng bangon. But because of the sudden movement it was like the world is suddenly spinning. Ipinikit ko ang mga mata ko at isinubsob ko ang mukha ko sa mga kamay ko habang hinihintay kong tumigil sa pag-ikot ang paningin ko.

Maddy.

If only it was just a bad dream. Pero alam ko ang sarili kong buhay. Hindi nagtatagal bilang hindi magandang panagip ang mga bagay sa buhay ko dahil laging nakakagawa ang tadhana ng paraan para siguraduhing mararamdaman ko ang puwersa no'n sa realidad ko.

I opened my eyes, finally taking in my surrounding. Hindi pamilyar ang kinaroroonan ko na lugar. I was expecting to see the small room of Dagger Private Security and Investigation. May mga available kasi na kuwarto sa headquarters nila Gunter kung saan maaaring gamitin pansamantala ng mga kliyente nila. Some of their employees also can use those. If I remember correctly there are eight rooms in Dagger.

Pero iba ang bumungad sa akin ngayon. The room is a bit bigger than the ones in Dagger. Rather than seeing their standard single bed, side table, and small cabinet; the room I'm currently in has more to it. Bukod sa mga nabanggit ay may naka-frame pa na painting sa itaas ng headboard ng kama. Mayroon ding maliit na office table at upuan. Sa itaas noon ay may bookcase na may tatlong shelves. There's even a few books neatly organized there. At the corner of the room, I saw a couple of my bags.

"Where am I?" I whispered.

Tumayo ako mula sa kama dahilan para mapatingin ako sa katawan ko. I'm wearing a hoodie that I'm pretty sure that is not mine. Bukod sa malaking size no'n na ang haba ay malapit ng abutin ang tuhod ko ay may naka-imprenta rin na symbolo ng Dagger sa kaliwang bahagi ng dibdib iyon.

I don't know what to feel about that. It's not like I have the right to be shy after passing out on him. Inabala ko pa siya lalo dahil bukod sa mga gamit ko ay pati ako ay kinakailangan niyang pag-aksayahan ng oras para bitbitin.

It was like the place is at the side of a mountain. I can see the decline of the earth and the greenery surrounding the vast land below. Bukod pa ro'n ay tanaw ko rin ang pamilyar na bulkan. Bakit ako nasa Tagaytay?

Dagger's headquarters was located in Manila. That's where I went to months ago. Pero bakit natatanaw ko ang Taal volcano sa labas ng bintana na kinaroroonan ko?

And where is Harper? Ilang sandali na nakatayo lang ako roon. Napabuntong-hininga ako pagkaraan dahil alam kong hindi ko masasagot ang mga tanong ko kung hindi ako lalabas ng kuwarto na iyon.

Naiilang man sa hindi pamilyar na lugar ay pinili kong lumabas na lang. When I opened the door an empty hallway greeted me. May mga nakasara ring mga pinto na kahilera ng pinanggalingan ko.

I started to walk but only to stop when I saw a huge frame with what appears as a guide of the place. May tila blueprint sa isang bahagi no'n habang sa gilid no'n ay may mga numero ng mga palapag na meron ang lugar at kung ano ang matatagpuan sa mga iyon.

According to what's written, the place has six floors. The ground floor where the lobby's at, the first floor which is the training area. Nandoon din ang outdoor pool at gym. The second floor has the fifteen small rooms indicated to be the bunk rooms of the employees. Third floor is the arms and devices floor. The research room is also located there.

Sa pang-apat naman na palapag kung saan mukhang naroon ako ay ang floor kung saan makikita ang walong guest rooms. The conference room, pantry, and kitchen are also in this floor. Sa panglima ay ang mga opisina ng magkakapatid at ang control room.

I guess they moved out of the old building. Mukha namang tama iyon na desisyon. Mas malaki di hamak ang gusali na inookupa ngayon ng Dagger.

I continued walking and when I turned right, that's when I saw them.

Mukhang hindi lang ako ang nagulat na makita sila dahil maging ang mga lalaki ay napatigil sa akmang pagpasok sa salamin na pintuan na nasa kanang bahagi ng palapag. It's the conference room. Salamin ang pader na nakapalibot doon kaya kita ko ang iba pang mga kapatid ni Gun na nasa loob na at ngayon ay hindi makapaniwalang nakatingin sa akin.

"I can't believe this," Pierce, the third Dawson, said through gritted teeth.

Hindi man lang ako nililingon na tumingin si Gun sa mga kapatid. "There's a reason why she's here."

"Kailangan pa ba ng rason? She's wearing your damn jacket."

"Pierce," Gun said with a warning in his tone.

"This is insane," Coal muttered. Siya ang pang-anim sa magkakapatid.

"Guys, chill lang tayo. Kaya nga may meeting di ba? Let's just go inside," pilit ang ngiti na mungkahi ni Trace.

Para akong tinulos na kandila sa kinatatayuan. I know they all hate me but I wasn't ready to see them all at the same time and receive their hatred. Pagkatapos naming maghiwalay ni Gun ay bukod noong pumunta ako sa dating HQ ay hindi ko na sila nakita ulit.

"What the hell is she doing here?"

Napatingin ako sa kaliwa ko nang bumukas ang pintuan nang tila kusina ng Dagger. Sa pinto no'n ay nakatayo ang madilim ang mukha na si Thorn.

"Kung sana nagbabasa kayo ng email ko sa inyo malalaman niyo kung bakit siya nandito," napapabuntong hininga na sabi ni Axel, ang pang-apat sa magkakapatid na Dawson. "Gun brought her here early in the morning. She passed out and I can't blame her. Kaya kung pwede lang umpisahan na natin ang meeting dahil may trabaho pa tayong kailangan balikan."

"Anong alam mo?" naniningkit ang mga matang tanong ni Pierce sa kapatid imbis na sumunod sa sinabi ng lalaki.

"For goodness sake," Axel muttered. "Wala akong alam maliban sa nakita kong dinala siya ni Kuya rito dahil nasa control room na ako kanina pang madaling-araw. Kuya Gun went to me and told me about the situation that's why I emailed you all and again, the email that you didn't read. Let's start-"

"Gun, are you really sure that you want to get involve?" putol ni Thorn sa kung ano pa ang sasabihin ni Axel. Nang hindi sumagot ang lalaki at nanatili lang nakatingin sa kaniya ay mahinang napamura ang nakakatandang Dawson. His eyes knifed towards my direction. "This is bullshit."

"Thorn Dawson."

The man moved away from the door, when suddenly a beautiful woman pushed him out. Mas matangkad lang siya ng kaunti sa akin pero walang takot sa mga mata niya habang masama ang pagkakatingin kay Thorn.

"Baby-"

"Don't you baby me." Humalukipkip siya at pinasadahan ng tingin ang mga lalaking nakatingin na sa kaniya. "I didn't know that you could treat a woman like this. Ganito ba talaga kayo?"

"Only to a woman we don't like," Thorn said.

I almost wince at the sharpness of those words. I deserve it. Alam ko naman iyon. Pero ang sakit pa rin palang marinig mula sa mga taong tinuring ko bilang pamilya ko.

"She broke up with your brother guys but she didn't gouge his eyes out, slash his intestines, cut his lungs into cubes, opened up his chest with a pizza cutter, or literally ripped out his heart until he's left with nothing but a hollow hole with blood spurting out off him and draining him dry. People break up all the time." Tinapunan niya ng tingin ang asawa. "Exemption tayo dahil kasal na tayo at mahal ang annulment."

Napanganga ako sa ibang klase niyang deskripsyon. Mukhang hindi lang naman ako ang naging ganoon ang reaksyon dahil lahat na ata kami ay tulalang nakatingin sa kaniya. Now I remember her. I saw her in the news. She's the famous gore writer, Lush Fox.

"Lucienne-"

She squinted her eyes at Thorn, "I love you, Thorn, and you're my husband and the father of the baby I'm carrying. Pero kapag hindi niyo tinigilan na pagtulungan ang babaeng kita naman na may pinagdadaanan, sasakay ako sa pegasus at hindi mo na kami makikita ng anak mo."

Baby. That was fast.

Nakita ko sila last year nang October noong pumunta ako sa dating building. I'm sure they weren't married yet at that time dahil nabalita rin ang kasal nila. That was just six months ago. Honeymoon baby siguro.

Good for them. Thorn deserve it and I know he will be a good father. After all, he took care of all his siblings when their mother died and years later... when their father was never found.

"Hello. I'm Lucienne Dawson."

Napakurap ako nang makita kong nakalapit na pala sa akin ang babae. Naiilang man sa mga matang alam kong nakatutok sa amin ay inabot ko ang kamay niya. "I'm-"

"Lia Asterio. I know you. I like your music," she said with a smile.

"I like your books too."

Napataas ang isa niyang kilay. "You read my books?"

"Yes. Meron akong kopya nang lahat ng libro mo."

"That's surprising."

"Why?" I asked in confusion.

"You don't seem the type to like my books. Mukha ka kasing prinsesa."

Alam kong namula ang mukha ko sa sinabi niya. I'm used to being complimented but not in front of men that clearly despises me.

"Let's start the damn meeting." Pierce growled and turned his back from us. Pumasok na siya sa loob ng conference room at bantulot man ay sumunod na ang iba pa.

Imbis na sumunod sa mga kapatid ay lumapit muna si Thorn kay Lucienne at nag-iwas ako ng tingin nang makita kong kinintalan niya ng halik sa mga labi ang babae. After that, without even glancing at me, he followed his brothers.

My eyes went to Gun when he didn't enter the room but instead he continued looking at me. Sandaling nanatili na magkahugpong ang mga mata namin. I can't read any emotion from his eyes and I just hope to the heavens that he won't be able to read mine. Because if he does, he'll see the longing reflected in mine.

"Eat breakfast. Harper is in the kitchen. I asked Lush to feed her." After that he went inside the conference room where his brothers are all waiting without glancing back.

I shouldn't be here. Tama naman ang galit na ipinararamdam sa akin ng mga kapatid niya. I left their brother at that time that he needed me most. Hindi ko na sila dapat guluhin pa.

Marami akong pwedeng mahanap na maaring tumulong sa sitwasyon ko. I have the money to hire whomever I want to. Hindi kailangang sila. Hindi ngayon na alam kong maayos na sila. I would just bring them nothing but problems. Just like I did last time.

"I love those men but sometimes they're all pain in the ass."

Nilingon ko ang babae na nakatayo pa rin sa tabi ko. "It's not their fault-"

"And it's yours?"

Nagulat ako sa sinabi niya. If she's married to Thorn she must know what happened. Kung paanong hiniwalayan ko si Gunter dahil gusto kong unahin ang musika. How I told him that I can't see myself with a man that's about to lose his company. That's what happened and that's what they all know.

That's the only thing they should know.

"Kung ano man ang nangyari sa inyo ni Gun ay sa inyo na lang iyon. Maybe you're really at fault. Maybe you're not. But the thing is aside from you and Gun, it's nobody else's business."

"I deserve it," I whispered.

"You saying that makes me think that you don't deserve it." Bumuka ang mga labi ko para magsalita pero inunahan niya na ako. "You and Gun have history. Alam kong hindi madali sa'yo na manatili rito. But those men can help you. Mayroon man na mas magaling sa kanila kung sakali but we both know that you'll never feel safe with them. Not like how you feel when you're with Gunter."

"Lucienne-"

"I know what it's like to be the center of a nightmare. I've been searching for a place where I could feel safe but I never really found it. Not until Thorn knocked on my house and entered my life."

"You and Thorn are different."

"Gore man ang sinusulat ko pero hindi ako bulag sa ibang bagay. Especially now that I found the love of my dreams. Kaya alam ko kung anong nakikita ko sa inyo ni Gun."

I don't want to think about that. I can't want that again. Kasi sa klase ng buhay na kinagisnan ko, hindi natutupad ang mga bagay na hinihiling ko. Fate will always find away to take the things I love away from me and I can't go through that again. I can't make him go through that again.

All I need is music. And yet I can't have that too.

"Do you know what happened to me?"

Nag-angat ako ng mga mata sa babae. "I know a bit."

"Someone turned my life into a game. He killed a lot of innocent people including my parents. I know what it feels like to think that maybe I'm doing something wrong. That maybe I'm the wrong in the world. Kasi para bang lason na kumakalat ang bawat mahawakan ng mga kamay ko."

I can see the window of that nightmare behind her happy eyes. Dahil kahit gaano man kaayos ang buhay mo sa kasalukuyan, hindi ibig sabihin no'n ay magagawang burahin no'n ang nakaraan mo na minsang naging madilim. It will always be a part of you. The pain will always be inside you.

"I was contented in my life doing what I love most even though I'm alone. One moment I was just enjoying doing what I love and in the next someone tainted it with their poison. But I also know that we just can't give up what we have. Hindi natin pwedeng isuko ang bagay na masaya tayong gawin. Just like how we can't give up the people that completes us."

"Hindi na kami pwedeng bumalik sa dati."

"Of course you can't. The past is the past."

Kahit alam ko kung ano ang tama at sa kabila ng katotohanan ng sitwasyon, ang hirap pa rin pala kapag sinasabi na sa akin ng harapan. May isang parte pa rin ng pagkatao ko ang nasasaktan na kinakailangan kong piliin ng paulit-ulit ang bagay na hindi ko kailanman nais na gustuhin.

"But you're living in the present, Lia. Hindi mo kailangang baguhin ang nakaraan para lang pumili ng tama sa pagkakataon na ito."

If only it's that easy.

MALIIT NA NGITI lang ang ibinigay ko kay Lucienne na tumayo na mula sa sofa na kinauupuan namin. Sa elevator ay naroon na ang asawa niya na si Thorn na hinihintay siya para ihatid sa baba. She said she needed to take care of some errands.

"See you at dinner."

I have a guess that she didn't intend to stay for hours here like she did. Sa tingin ko ay nagtagal lang siya dahil sa akin. Akala ko ay aalis na siya kanina nang magpaalam ako sa kaniiya but after I took a bath and changed into my own clothes, I found her waiting for me in the room I was using. She was casually lounging on the office chair in the room while playing something on her phone.

I also think that they didn't really have plans for dinner. Base na rin sa tinatapon na tingin sa direksyon namin ng mga lalaking nasa loob conference room pa rin nang sabihin niya sa akin na sumama raw ako sa family dinner nila.

I declined of course but I don't suppose she's the kind of person you can easily turn down dahil hindi siya pumayag na humindi ako.

Pangalawang beses ko pa lang siyang nakita pero magaan na ang loob ko sa kaniya. Siguro dahil na rin sa siya lang ang bukod tanging tao sa lugar na ito na hindi ako tinitignan sa paraan na para bang may krimen akong ginawa.

We talked for hours. Or she did. She told me a lot of her situation before at kung paano niya nakilala si Thorn. She told me about her new romance-action series. She also told me about her fascination with anything that has unicorn in it. She didn't mind that I just listened to her talk and rarely tell her anything about me. She's has a pure heart despite everything she went through.

"Bye, Harper!"

I looked down at my shoulder where Harper was perched at. She made a chirping sound as if answering Lucienne's farewell.

Lumawak ang ngiti sa mga labi ni Lucienne sa naging akto ni Harper. Naglakad na siya papunta sa elevator pero bago siya tuluyang pumasok ay muli siyang lumingon sa akin. "Dinner, okay? I'll expect you there."

I manage to force a nod. Hindi ko alam kung anong gagawin kong dahilan para hindi ako makasama pero kailangan kong gumawa ng paraan. I don't belong in their family. Not anymore.

"Lia?" Hinarap ko ang pinanggalingan nang boses at nakita ko si Trace na nakasungaw ang ulo mula sa salamin na pintuan ng conference room. "You're needed in the meeting."

Napalunok ako sa sinabi niya. I straightened the navy green shift dress I'm wearing and stood up. Inilagay ko muna si Harper sa hawla niya na nakapatong sa coffee table sa harapan ko.

You're going to be fine. You've been to tons of situation where you felt uncomfortable and you still managed to smile and do whatever you needed to do.

Naglakad ako patungo sa kinaroroonan nila. When I went inside they all looked at me. I received some emotionless stare while others blatantly glared at me. Those being Pierce and Coal.

I wasn't surprised. They always been protective of each other. After all that they've lost, they relied on one another a lot. It's something that I always admire when it comes to them. Pinapatunayan kasi nila na handa silang gawin lahat para maging maayos ang pamilya nila.

Dumako ang tingin ko kay Gun pero hindi siya nakatingin sa akin at sa halip ay nasa laptop sa harapan niya ang mga mata niya. Despite our history I have no doubt that he will do everything he can for me. I just don't know if I want him to do that.

Should I let him do this? Pagkatapos ko siyang saktan? Pagkatapos kong talikuran kung ano ang meron kami? It's unfair to him and to his family.

"Have a sit," Trace said and pulled out a chair before returning to his own.

Bantulot man ay umupo ako sa bakanteng upuan na nasa tabi ni Axel na kasalukuyang may sinusulat sa notebook sa harap niya. Sitting across from me, Gun finally looked up. Direktang tumingin siya sa akin. "We need a list."

"W-What list?"

"A list of people that you think would do this."

Pinagala ko ang mga mata ko sa magkakapatid. They've been doing this a long time. Kilala na ngayon ang kompanya nila bilang pangalawa sa top three na security and investigation company sa bansa. From almost losing their company... now their on the top.

"I think you should transfer me to another company."

His jaw hardened at what I said, his eyes flashing dangerously. "For god's sake, Lia."

"I-I think that would be best considering... considering the history here."

"Do you think I can't work objectively? This is a job. Nothing else."

"I know that you're good at what you're doing but-"

"No."

Bahagyang umawang ang mga labi ko sa tinuran niya. His tone sounded definite. Pamilyar ako sa tono ng boses niya na iyon dahil hindi iilang beses na ginagamit niya sa akin iyon kapag may pinagtatalunan kami. And now with everything that happened between us, and despite the fact that I'm in an unsure place, that tone can still rile me up.

"No?"

"No," he said in confirmation.

Ramdam ko ang pagsulak ng init sa magkabila ko na pisngi. "No? This is my life Gunter. Ako ang magdedesisyon kung anong gusto kong gawin sa buhay ko."

"No. Not if you're being stupid."

"I-I'm... I can't believe you!"

"Believe it."

Kuyom ang mga kamay na muling lumibot ang paningin ko sa kanilang magkakapatid. Nakita ko si Trace na nakatukod ang siko sa lamesa habang ang kamay ay bahagyang nakatakip sa bibig niya habang pinagmamasdan kami, Axel is trying to ignore us by focusing hard on his notes, si Pierce naman ay nakahalukipkip habang may talim ang mga mata na nagpapabalik-balik sa amin ni Gun ang tingin nya, Coal looks like he's rather be anywhere else than here, and Domino is holding his phone up for some bizarre reason.

"It's not up to you what I do with my life, Gun," I said through gritted teeth. "Transfer me."

"No."

"Gunter!"

"No."

Hindi ko intensyon ang sumunod kong sinabi. But he's leaving me with no choice. "You're not even the best. Dagger's on top two. I have the right to choose who I will trust my life with."

Mukhang balewala kay Gun ang sinabi ko maging sa mga kapatid niya. Top two is not something to sneeze at. I know that. Considering na bago lang ang kompanya nila sa larangan na ito. They know they're good that's why they are not even the least affected at my words.

"No one will take your case. Everyone has a full load."

Pinaningkitan ko ng mga mata ang lalaki. I gripped the table with one hand, trying my best to be calm. "You don't know that."

"I do know."

"But-"

"Stop being stupid, Lia. Alam mong matutulungan ka namin. The more you cooperate the quicker that we'll get this done. Hindi lang buhay mo ang nakataya rito at alam mo iyon."

Sinaklot ng takot ang dibdib ko sa sinabi niya. Maddy carried the burden of the danger waiting in the shadows for me. She was young. Too young. Ang dami niya pang pwedeng magawa. She didn't even have her own family yet. Ang dami niyang hindi naranasan dahil sa akin.

But it's not done yet. Nasa peligro pa rin ang buhay ng mga tao sa buhay ko.

"What will happen to them?" I asked, my voice dropping into a whisper. Binitawan ko ang lamesa nang makaramdam ako ng panghihina. I saw Gun's eyes went to my hand that is now shaking with an unmistakable fear.

"They will be fine."

"My team-"

"We dispatched a lot of our employees for them. The police will also conduct patrols." Inunahan niya ako nang makita niyang bumuka ang mga labi ko para magsalita. "We really need the list, Lia."

Every second that I'm near him... it will kill me. But that's not the important thing to me. Ang pinaka-importante sa akin ay ang mararamdaman niya. I don't want to hurt him more that I already did. Pero tama rin siya. I'm being stupid. Again.

"I don't know how."

Nag-angat ng mukha si Axel at nilingon ako. "You can start by giving us names of everyone you had a relationship with."

"There will be no much of a list then," I murmured.

"We're not here to count the number of your lovers. Just give us names." There's a sharpness on Gun's voice when he said that. There's anger in his eyes again but this time it looks different.

I wring my hands anxiously. Paano ko ba ipapaliwanag sa kanila? There's only one man I held hands with, one man that I hugged, kissed... there's only man that I shared every first with.

"You."

"It's unlikely for Gun to commit a crime, Lia." Sa pagkakataon na ito ay si Pierce ang nagsalita.

"I don't know what to tell you then."

Sandaling katahimikan ang namayani sa paligid. Nakita ko pang nagkatinginan si Domino at Trace at may kung anong nagdaan sa kanilang dalawa. Domino looked at his phone he's still pointing at me and Gun consecutively.

"You never dated anyone?" Pierce asked in disbelief.

"No."

"But the news-"

I cut him off. Really? As if the gossip news can be trusted. "Are all thrash." Inangat ko ang isa kong kamay at umakto na nagbibilang. "First, they've been linking me with Calvin Romero. Calvin is married and I know his wife. Nakuhanan kami ng litrato sa tapat ng isang restaurant kung saan nagkataon lang na naroon din ako. Kasama rin niya ang asawa niya that time. Second, Riley Meyer. Again, not true. He's a closet gay." Natigilan ako nang may maisip. "Please keep it confidential."

"Of course," Trace answered for his brothers.

I nodded my head and continued. "Third, Ronan Tesoro. We happened to just shared the same hotel because we both had events near the area. People suddenly begun to speculate we're together when they photograph me with him in the lobby of the hotel. Fourth, Nico Baltazar. He asked me out on a date, yes, but we never did because he got back with his ex before I even agree."

"Did you want to date him?"

Si Gun ang nagtanong niyon. Napatingin sa kaniya ang mga kapatid niya pero hindi pinili kong ignorahin sila at direktang sinagot ko ang lalaki.

"No."

He continued looking at me for a moment. It was as if he's trying to read my soul, digging through the defenses that I built over the years to protect myself. The wall that I already have when I met him but he was always the exemption. He's the only one that can get pass through.

"And lastly Damian Salazar."

"You went out with him," Gun said as a statement rather than a question.

"He asked me but I never agreed."

"You were with him at the after party."

Nagsalubong ang mga kilay ko. "Nandoon ka?"

"You went here looking freaked. You told Trace that you're having an issue with a fan. We're not assholes. We decided to make sure if you're okay." His eyes hardened into a steel. "Answer the question."

They wanted to make sure if I'm okay. "Y-You didn't asked a question."

"For god's sake you two." Coal growled, clearly pissed. "Stop acting like a married couple so we can get this over with."

Hindi siya pinansin ni Gun at nanatiling nakatutok sa akin ang atensyon niya. "Are you dating the president's son, Lia?"

"No!" I said exasperatedly. "I already told you. I never dated anyone but you!"

"Fuck me." I heard Trace cursed quietly. There's humor in his voice but I can't look away from Gun. I want him to understand.

There's really no one else. I couldn't be with anyone else even though I know I can't be with him anymore.

I was young when I first him but even at that time I know that I wouldn't be able to find another love like I did when I fell for him at first sight. He's the other half of my soul, he's the fate carved on my hands.
