Fiction or Reality
(Alternative Title: Mondays really are the worst day ever)
(Also, if you don't like sad stuff or sliiiiightly scary stuff, don't read this).
(Shuichi's POV)
It was a humid and sticky summer day. I was home alone, as my parents were out of town on business. This wasn't very new to me, I was used to it.
Occasionally my uncle would come to check on me, but that only happened once or twice a week.
I lied on my bed, alone in my room. The neighborhood I lived in wasn't very big and each backyard led to the forest. There weren't many people who lived here, so it was very quite, the only thing I could hear was the loud buzzes from insects and the occasional call from a bird. It was nice.
I continued to lie in bed, unmotivated to move due to the heat. The sunlight from my window burned my eyes, so I turned onto my back and stared up at the ceiling as different thoughts ran across my mind. Somehow, my mind wandered of to a horror novel a girl at my school highly recommend I read. She was pretty strange herself.
The book was actually pretty good. I read it alone and regretfully always at night. I never really got scared from books before, but this one sure had me spooked. Thinking about it made me jump at any new noise.
My thoughts were interrupted from my phone beginning to ring. I had to pick up the motivation to open my eyes and turn around to pick it up. When I faced my phone, I saw who was calling me. Kokichi Ouma. I quickly jumped up and grabbed my phone. Kokichi was my best friend, and for some reason I was always happy to be talking to him. "H-hey!" I quickly said into the phone.
"Morning Sleepyhead!" He teased. Ouma often greeted me in the morning this way. It started because he once was barley a few inches from my face when I woke up and he said the same thing. "How's my beloved Saihara-Chan?"
"I... Wasn't even asleep," I argued.
"If I know you, you're probably still in bed," he said giggling a bit.
"Yeah, you probably are too," I brought up. "Noo," he continued, "I'm looking at you through your window."
For some reason I instantly got up at looked at the window. Nothing was there. Ouma started dying laughing at the other side of the phone, "did you really fall for that? Oh gullible Saihara-Chan, that was obviously a lie. You were right like always, I'm still in bed."
I plopped back onto my bed, blushing in embarrassment. I was so jumpy today, but had no idea why. "Don't trick me like that..."
"Aww you're no fun," he pouted. I sighed and smiled, even if he was teasing me, I enjoyed our conversations. "Well there's a reason why I called you~," Ouma continued.
"Hmm?"
"Sooo, my mother is going to visit my grandmother for three days next week, which means I'll have the house to myself. Wanna... Come over? It'll just be me and you~" He asked.
"H-huh?!" My face went completely red and my heart rate accelerated.
"Just kidding. I'm inviting Rantaro, Kaito, and Kiiboy too!" He laughed.
"Ah... Oh." I sighed. Ouma definitely was the type to plan something big as soon as his mother was away.
"Hmm, you seem disappointed!" He teased.
"Wh-what?! N-no! It's not like that!" I said instantly. I tried to change the subject. "But... Sure, I'm definitely gonna be free, what day?" I asked.
"6:00 on Monday, don't be late, Nishishi!" He laughed before hanging up the phone.
It was Friday, so it was only two days away. Knowing Ouma, he was probably planning some sort of prank. Well whatever it was I was prepared for it.
I flopped over and put my phone over my chest. I continued to stare up at the ceiling as to pass time and think about some of my worries. The soft sounds of the outside fading out.
----------
Saturday and Sunday quickly flew by. It was now Monday, not very long before I was supposed to be at Ouma's. I was excited to go. He never failed at keeping things interesting. Ouma was one of my neighbors, so walking wasn't a big deal. It would only take about five to eight minutes to get there, depending on how quickly I walked.
At this time of year, it was a very beautiful walk. The trees were lush and bright green. Some leaves had fallen into the floor, as summer was coming to a close. I enjoyed these peaceful walks I would take.
I reached Ouma's place. I walked up to the front door, trees filling around that area. I knocked onto the door, and Ouma instantly answered, as if he were impatiently awaiting my arrival.
"Helloooo!" He smiled, as he threw me into the house. I almost lost my balance and fell. Steadying myself, my eyes met Kaito Momota and Rantaro Amami, sitting in the living room.
"Took you long enough," Amami smirked. He was the most mysterious of the group. He'd never mentioned anything about himself a part from his interest. All I knew is that his parents were loaded and he had a huge family consisting of twelve sisters.
"It's only 5:03!" I argued.
"I tooooold you not to be late!" Ouma complained.
"Leave my bro alone!" Momota defended. He was always so overprotective of me to the point where it'd get annoying. I'd always appreciate his attempts to make me feel better, though.
I ignored the whole fuss about me being 'late' and noticed Kiibo wasn't present. Kiibo was always took gatherings like this very seriously, so I thought he would be early.
"Is Kiibo here?" I asked.
"Nah. Kiiboy had to cancel last minute! How rude!" Ouma complained. I found his childish behavior quite funny, but it confused me that Kiibo had cancelled so suddenly.
"Now that Saihara-Kun is here, can we watch the movie you were talking about?" Amami asked, "I would like to know that I didn't just bring popcorn for no reason." (Popcorn is my drug).
"Wait, are you talking about the horror one?!" Momota asked, his eyes going wide.
"Yep! As long as Saihara-Chan agrees!" Ouma said, completely ignoring Momota's fear.
"Sure," I agreed.
Amami entered the kitchen to make popcorn as Ouma set up the movie.I had heard of this one before, and had heard it was pretty bad.
Amami finished up in the kitchen and walked back into the living area, the buttery smell of the popcorn filling the room. It was now I realized I had barely eaten today. He handed out the bowls one by one then finally took his seat in one of the squeaky old reclining chairs.
Ouma played the movie and it went just as I had expected. It wasn't very scary, and Amami, Ouma, and I ended up making fun of it while we watched. If I'm being honest, it made the movie more enjoyable. I had noticed Ouma was sitting unnecessarily close to me, which kinda made me feel... Well, weird, that's the only way I can explain it.
Momota didn't seem to be enjoying himself at all. He stayed silent the whole time, probably holding his breath. The movie ended. It was about 8:00pm. Outside looked like a dark abyss, freckled with white stars.
Momota let out a deep breath as if he had just regained the ability to breath.
"Was that too scaaaary for you, Momota-Kun?" Ouma teased, playfully putting his finger to his chin as an evil grin grew onto his face. He and Momota never really got along, so Ouma would always try and make him as uncomfortable as possible.
"Wh-what?! No way!! I'm not scared!" He claimed, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Nishishi.... Then how about we... Camp out in the woods tonight?" Ouma suggested.
Momota choked back his fear, but put on a brave face, "F-Fine then!" You could tell he was nervous. The way he was shaking and his pale face, he would probably die in only two seconds of being out there.
"That sounds like fun," Amami agreed, "do you have some tents?"
"You bet I do! I used to go camping all the time, so I've got a few," Ouma answered enthusiastically.
That was right, I remembered a camping trip we went on when we were younger. We ran away from out parents in order to explore the woods. During our 'adventure' he fell down and scraped his knee on a rock. I remember panicking like it was a big deal. I instantly grabbed his hand and dragged him back to the campsite, thankful we hadn't made it too far. we were only five when that happened, but I remembered it as if it were yesterday.
I was excited to go camping with him again. I didn't see a problem with camping outside since it was a public area that was rather safe. The worst thing that could probably happen is getting bit by an animal, if you were dumb.
Ouma went upstairs to grab the tents and a few flashlights. Amami and I went to go get some snacks. Momota just mumbled some words to himself, probably to sooth his irrational fear of ghost, a creature that didn't even exist.
"Kaaaayy!! You guys readddyyy??" Ouma called from upstairs.
"Yeah!" I called back. Ouma came back downstairs, hands full of supplies. Some he was lugging behind him, clanging after each step he went down.
I walked upstairs to help Ouma carry some of his things. He seemed much more comfortable after I took some of the load. He looked up and smiled at me, "thanks Saihara-Chan!"
I couldn't explain the feeling I felt next, but it warmed my heart and blushed my cheeks pink. "N-no problem."
"Well are we all ready to go?" Ouma asked.
I looked over at Amami. He was holding his phone in his hands, his face pale. It looked like he had just seen a ghost, or someone had threatened the worst out of him. "Sorry guys, I need to leave. My sister... Isn't feeling well," he simply said, before quickly heading towards the door.
Ouma and I both could tell he was lying, it was probably something much more serious. Amami probably wouldn't tell us though, no matter how much we pried. "Hope she gets better," Ouma said in a flat tone.
Amami left without another word. This kinda freaked me out, as a long silence filled the room afterwards. What was so serious that Amami had to leave so suddenly?
Ouma quickly changed the subject. "Well are we gonna go camping or what?"
I was surprised at how quickly he was able to ignore the whole deal with Amami that had just happened. Thinking about it though, that's just how Amami was. I smiled and nodded.
We walked out through the back door, practically having to drag Momota outside by his ear. I turned on my flashlight, as it was too dark to see without it. The light filled my vision with the familiar forest. It reminded me a lot of the climax of the horror novel I was thinking about two days ago. This comparison sent a small shiver down my spine. I felt as though I'd next find an abandoned beat up shack with fresh blood and corpses that looked a disfigured mess, and before I even realized it.... I'd be cut straight through with an axe. My imagination is what made this trip more scary than it had to be.
"Nice evening we're having..." Momota laughed nervously, squeezing both Ouma and I tightly.
"Yeah, totally," Ouma said. He stopped walking. "Here. This should be good. It's far enough from the house that it feels like we're camping, but close enough that we can make it back easily," He explained.
Momota happily agreed to stay here, not wanting to go any deeper into the woods than we already had.
"Hey, Saihara-Chan," Ouma said looking up at me, "help me set up the tents?"
I agreed to help out, Momota did as well. The tents Ouma had were thankfully very easy to set up, so we had both tents done in no time at all.
"We're gonna need to start a fire," Ouma pointed out. "So we're gonna need wood."
"Oh hoo no!" Momota said, "there's no way I'm going out any deeper in these woods, and I won't let you two go either! Who knows what's out there?! Especially AT NIGHT!!" He complained. "We can just use the flashlights for light," Momota suggested.
"You're ruining the camping vibe though!" Ouma said.
I placed my hand on his shoulder, "hey, it's obvious Momota is already very scared, so I'm sure we can settle for this," I compromised.
Ouma pouted, but agreed.
The three of us sat right outside the tents, flashlights to our faces. We talked about miscellaneous topics, which somehow almost always seemed to find its way back to something spooky. This was Ouma's doing, wanting to tease Momota. We were having a good time, until we heard an unusual rustling in the bushes near by.
"What was that?!" Momota yelled instantly.
"It's probably nothing, you huge idiot," Ouma assured him. I tried to believe that, but the noise continued.
"N-no something is definitely in there," Momota said, now whispering and pointing towards the bushes that were only a few feet away from us.
It was then I noticed a pitch black figure near where Momota was pointing. This made my heart drop. Momota was right, something really was in there! I admit, my heart rate increased in speed.
Momota grabbed Ouma and I and hugged us close, "I-If I don't make it out of this alive, tell my grandparents I love them!" He cried.
Ouma sighed and pointed his flashlight to the bush, "see you big wuss? It's only a board someone probably left here earlier," Then a cute little animal popped it's head put of the bushes.
Ouma shook his head and sighed, "there really is nothing to be worried about."
Momota got up and grabbed his flashlight, "sorry Ouma, but I think I'm gonna leave," He said, beginning to walk away.
"Fine, suit yourself," Ouma didn't argue. I guess he was getting fed up with how Jumpy Momota was. He immediately got up with his flashlight and left.
"Do you think... He'll be ok?" I asked.
Ouma looked at me and smiled, "of course he'll be ok! It's not like there's some murder out here."
Although he was trying to comfort me, this just made me more scared. He was right though, it wasn't very likely.
"Besides," Ouma began, "we're alone now~"
"H-huh? Wh-what does that mean?" I asked.
"It means... I get to spend time with my only friend who isn't hopelessly booooring," He explained. I sighed, not sure if it was in relief... Or something else.
"Anyway now that Momota's gone, we can finally make a fire, y'know?" Ouma began, "can my beloved Saihara-Chan go look for some wood we can use while I set up some other things?" He requests.
"Y-yeah, I'll go do that," I said, getting up and brushing dirt off my knees.
I started walking through the dark woods, picking up every stick I came across. It was long before I had completely fallen into my thoughts and walked... A little further than I should have.
I ended up finding a beaten up shack. "I... Don't remember this ever being here..." I thought aloud. Being curious, I decided to check it out. What could be in there? Walking closer, I was hoping to satisfy my curiosity.
However, I stopped dead in my tracks when I heard an unsettling noise. It was a sharp clang, that left as quickly as it had came. It sounded like a swinging axe. It was then my mind flickered back to the novel, oh how that story reminded me a lot of today. I no longer wanted to know what was inside the beat down building.
I walked a bit closer to get a better idea of the noise. It definitely was an axe, but the thing swinging it... I had no idea what it was. The inhuman noises I heard, made me stop dead in my tracks. I felt nervous and scared.
Who was here? This noise had to be coming from someone... Or something. This wasn't a good idea, I should definitely head back now.
I moved my legs, told myself to at least. It was as if, I was warning myself this wasn't as bad as it was going to get and staying here was a better option. I ignored the feeling when the shadows seemed to warp into different forms and figures, almost like some sort of creature, and the axe noises continued to echo throughout the area. It definitely was not safe here.
So my feet finally got the message and I started running back as quickly as possible. I streched my legs as long as they could go, dropping all the wood I had gathered.
I pleaded that this was just my imagination, that the warping shadows, noises, and bloody aroma weren't real, but that proved to be false. I could feel tears forming in my eyes, as the noises didn't seem to go away, as if they were following me, getting closer and faster. As if I saw something I shouldn't have, or this creature had a quickly growing list for blood. I could hear the rustling of near by trees and bushes. No matter how close it sounded, though, I never looked back, desperate to make it back to Kokichi.
After running for what seemed like a whole eternity, I saw a light that looked similar to a glow from a flashlight. Hope filled my heart, my entire world, as the person holding the flash light, was Kokichi Ouma.
"KOKICHI!!" I shouted, running up to him.
"Where the hell did you go, Saihara-Chan?!" Ouma yelled, "you scared the crap out of me!" He must've noticed my tear stained face by now because his angry expression had converted to more concerned one.
I grabbed his hand, "we have to get out of here, Now."
"S-Saihara, are you ok?" He asked, "what happened while you were gone?"
"I-I don't have time to explain!" I started to drag him in the opposite direction, where his house would be, we needed to get back there and lock all the doors.
"H-hey slow down! At least just tell me why we're running!!" He complained, almost tripping over due to the sudden speed.
"It's dangerous out here...!" I warned him.
"Pshh, dangerous? Did Momota's imagination get to you?" He asked.
I completely ignored him as we ran back to his house. I was thankful we decided not to set out camp too far, because the house would be close by. Through the trees, I could barley notice glowing light coming through the window, for we had left a light on. I had never been happier to see his place.
"W-we're here!" I quietly celebrated to myself.
I swung open the back door, threw Ouma inside, and ran in myself. Turning around, I slammed the door shut and locked it.
"So do you want to tell me what the just happened? And what that weird ass noise was?" Ouma asked.
Ouma was safe, and so was I, I couldn't bother myself with explaining as this wave of security washed over me. I simply fell to my knees as tears started streaming from my eyes. Some may say I was overreacting, but living in a neighborhood that was supposed to be one of the safest, nothing like this had ever happened to me.
Kokichi dropped to the ground soon after I did, "Sh-Shuich-"
"Have... You ever seen an old beat up shack in those woods before?" I asked.
"Huh? There's nothing like that back there..." Kokichi said.
"That's what I thought too... But there was something there, and some strange shadow creature inhabiting it!!" I explained.
Ouma started to laugh a little, "pshh do you need to get your head checked? There's no such things a-"
"I'm dead serious."
Ouma's smile dropped. He knew I wasn't one to make jokes like this. "O-okay... What was it like?" He asked.
I started from the beginning. I told him how it seemed to be changing forms, some looking human, some... Not. I told him about the similarities between the events of today and the novel I had read a while back. He listened. He listened to every word. He believed me.
"So what can we do about this?!" Ouma asked.
"Nothing," I answered, "nothing but... Forget about it, I guess."
He turned his head away and nodded. He agreed there was really nothing we could do, knowing him he probably hated that.
It was then I realized a weird smell, it had been there the whole time, but I just now noticed it. It seemed to be coming from the front door.
"Is there something... at the door?" I asked, face blank.
"Hmm?" Kokichi asked, "what... Do you mean?"
He seemed oblivious to the odd scent. "Can you... Look at the door for me?"
"I, um, alright," He asked, obviously confused.
He got up to do as I requested. I had this sinking feeling in my stomach, I felt sick. I didn't know why, that feeling was just there.
Ouma opened the door, and looked to the side. There was nothing, he then looked to the other side of the door, and stiffened. He walked outside of the house and looked at the door, "HOLY SHIT!!" He cried.
I shot off the ground, "What is it?!" I asked running over. Ouma's face was sheet white, his whole body shaking.
I soon figured out the cause of this and the sickening feeling I had.
Kaito Momota's dead body was pinned up to the door, all the color and life sucked from his face.
There were all kinds of cuts and wounds all over his body, each dripping with bright pink blood. My false sense of security dripping from my soul.
I couldn't think of anything else to do but scream, "KAITO!!"
Momota... One of my friends... Was he really dead?
"H-He's d-dead?!" Ouma shrieked. "Wh-What do we do?!"
"We need to call the police or... Something!!!" I yelled.
"I left my phone at the campsite because you were in such a hurry to get home!" Ouma explained.
Damn it... I did too.
"There's no way we can go back in there though!" I said.
"We can run to town?" Ouma suggested. "I-its not very far... We can make it!"
He was right. There was a small town nearby. There were shops I liked to occasionally visit, and a police station. "That... Sounds like a good idea," I agreed, "we'll need the flashlight, though. I'll go get it."
I quickly ran into the house to retrieve the flashlight, my whole body trembling. Momota was alive and well not very long ago... To think he was dead now...
I tried my best not to think about it and continued to search for the flashlight. "Wh-where did he put it?! He had it when we ran inside!!"
Eventually, I found the flashlight and went back outside, "ok, let's go now!" I whisper yelled to Ouma.
He nodded and we quickly began running to town. Not even seeing Ouma's scarf he always wears, bloody on the floor.
On the way there, I found myself thinking, "could the thing in the woods... Have something to do with Momota's death? Could that thing... Be a real threat? If that were the case, would the police be able to do something about it?"
"Hey, no need to worry about anything," I hear Ouma say, as if he knew I was scared that nothing could be done. "I'm sure everything will be taken care of!"
That... Was odd. What was with this optimism? He wasn't very known for that... Perhaps he really just wanted me to feel better. I was still scared, but hearing those words from him made me think everything was going to be ok. It was a sense of hope. "We're almost there, we need to pick up the pace," I said, beginning to run ahead.
We made it there.
People were walking down the streets.
We weren't alone.
We were alive.
And we were going to get the police.
I felt like crying in relief, but I had already cried too much today, I didn't want to bother Ouma. He already had too much to worry about. He didn't need a crying Shuichi on top of that. I remembered where the police station was, even though I didn't go over to this area often.
I ran in, Ouma follow behind.
We told the police everything. Ouma was a bit more descriptive than he had to be. Maybe that was because of nervousness... I ignored it. They said that they were going to investigate and said we should wait here.
"Hey... Can you come outside with me really quick?" Ouma asked. "There's something I need to say to you..."
This concerned me. He had been acting strange, so of course I'd let him talk to me. "O-of course I can," I said, getting up. He smiled and led me outside. There was a bench up against a wall we decided to sit on.
Ouma took a deep breath. "I know... This probably isn't the best time... But I'm scared, scared I'll lose you before I get the chance to tell you..."
"Tell me... What?"
"W-well... That I," He took another deep breath in, "really like you a lot! I-I don't want you to die! I... I'm scared. I don't know what I'd do without you."
I couldn't believe my ears. Did he... Just confess his feelings for me? I... Felt happy. At the same time though, This couldn't be right.
"Y-you... Like me?" I ask.
He turns away and nods his head.
I... I felt the same way, I had realized. So why didn't I feel happy? Why... Didn't this feel right? Ouma wasn't acting like himself... Almost as if he wasn't. It was then I remembered the horror novel for the one millionth time today. The book, had a creature with extreme blood lust. A creature who would kill others and take their form, in order to kill people close to them. I remembered Ouma's bloody scarf near the front door. Of course, these were all assumptions, but I had the strong feelings they were right.
Choking back tears, I spoke.
"You're not Kokichi."
A/N: AAAAAHHHHHH I RUSHED TO FINISH THIS.
I TOOK ME TWO DAYS.
HALP.
IT WAS PRETTY LAME.
IK.
BUT I THOUGHT IT WAS FUN TO WRITE IT EVEN THOUGH I FAILED SUPER HARD.
The beginning is much better than the end but I feel like I'll lose motivation if I try and edit the ending more than I already have.
This chapter is over 4,500 words though.
W O A H
It's hella long.
It's also late and I'm tired.
And I'm debating posting this because idk if its good.
Screw it, I'mma do it.
Omg I'm ranting sorry.
One more thing though:
so yeah I haven't updated in a while. If you don't read my meme book, it's because I decided to take a break from publishing stuff. I was just stressing out about a ton of stuff and decided it would be best for me. I hope you understand, but I should be updating regularly now.
Ok, have a good night/day!
