Forgiven//Dashpaw
Take a deep breath, Dashpaw. Everything's going to be fine. Get your name, and get out.
"Mudpaw, Bluepaw, and Dashpaw, come forward."
Wingstar's fluffy gray coat was turned a scarlet red as the sun settled. The air was already cold, which was normal for mid-leaf bare, but still wasn't very appealing.
Shivering, I stepped into the shadows of Tall Rock, Bluepaw and my brother at my side.
Don't make eye contact. Stare straight ahead.
Wingstar jumped down from his perch to look us all in the eye. He raised his tail proudly, amber eyes solemn.
"Mudpaw, Bluepaw, and Dashpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, even at the cost of your life?"
I blurt out first,"I do!"
Mudpaw is second, and there's no doubt he didn't mean it,"I do."
"I do,"Bluepaw's mew is the quietest, but there's a fierce note of corsage(don't ask)in her voice.
Wingstar nodded,"Then I shall make you warriors," He rested his muzzle on Mudpaw's head,"Mudpaw, from now on, you shall be known as Mudstorm. RockClan thanks you for your determination and spirit."
Mudstorm licked Wingstar's shoulder, and the Clan leader pulled away. He repeated the action, and Bluepaw became Bluefire.
"RockClan thanks you for your diligence and intelligence."
Wingstar eyed me over before laying his head on my mine. I could feel his breath stirring up the short fur on my head.
"From now on, you shall be known as Dashmoon,"
Dashmoon?! What kind of name is that?!
"RockClan thanks you for your . . ." The big tom trailed off as if he was thinking hard about something.
I heard snickers and clever remarks clearly, and I let my tail fall to the ground. My eyes were burning, and I dipped my head so no one would see be blinking like my life depended on it.
Don't you dare cry. Don't you dare cry! Ignore them. You're awesome Dashmoon! Ignore them. Ignore them. Ignore them. Don't let the tears fall!
I felt a furry paw lift up my head. Wingstar's cold orbs(yes I used the word don't judge me) were sympathetic,"RockClan thanks you for being you, and fighting for your Clan."
The cats of RockClan leaped up with joy,"Mudstorm! Bluefire! Mudstorm! Bluefire!"
No one is calling my name. I expected as much.
Fawncall, who was expected to kit her second and probably final litter soon, was going crazy, screeching and yowling her son and foster daughter's names like they had just been made leaders. She didn't even cast a glance my way . . .
"Dashmoon!"
"Huh?" I muttered under my breath, trying to figure out who had just shouted.
"Dashmoon! Dashmoon!" It was Jadepaw!
The beautiful she-cat's glossy coat shined a array of colors in the failing sunlight, and her eyes were big and sparkly as usual. Our eyes met, and a wonderful, tingling sensation filled my chest. A feeling that some cats thought could be given and taken away at anytime. Love. I purred quietly and smiled at her.
"Clan dismissed!" Wingstar looked back down to us,"Remember, you have a silent vigil tonight. I suggest you eat something and take your posts."
Wingstar walked back to his cave, looking older than Tall Rock. Mudstorm watched him go excitedly.
"Come on Bluefire! Let's get our grub on!" The fluffy brown tabby led his placid companion to the freshkill pile, but I stayed put. It was full of yucky land prey.
I'll catch myself a fish, like a real RockClan warrior!
I padded down the bumpy tunnel that led to the Shadowed River. I had taken only three steps when I heard the sound of rapid pawsteps behind him. I yelped as I felt something furry ram into my side and sent me to the pebbly ground. The rocks dug into my skin and I hissed.
"Why'd you-Jadepaw?!"
Holy StarClan's kits! She's on top of me! Don't think dirty thoughts! Don't think dirty thoughts!
The skin under my fur was an inferno. Her muzzle was so close to mine, I could see every detail of her face. The swirl of her whiskers, the curl of her smile, the gleam in her eye. . .
"Sorry for running you over,"She squeezed my face between her little paws,"I'm just super excited! You all got your warrior names! Lucky!"
She hopped off of my stomach, and I shook out the crumbs of rock in my pelt,"Don't worry Jade,"I called her by her nickname,"You'll get your name before you know it!"
Then we could be more than just friends.
Jadepaw's amazing, emerald eyes glowed, and she gave an energetic bounce,"I can't wait to be a warrior! I'll be Jadetheawesomeone!"Her voice dropped an octave,"And I get to share a den with Mudstorm."
I stiffen with shock,"What?"
Jadepaw practically swooned,"I'll show him that Bluefire's no good! He'll be my mate, and we'll share tongues and sleep in the same nest and everything!"
I feel my legs start to loose feeling. Jadepaw starts to sway . . .nevermind, that's me.
The black she-cat is oblivious to my sudden lack of excitement,"Bluefire's going the dirt place! I'm going to go talk to Mudstorm while he's alone! See ya, Dash!"
As she darts away, rage starts to bubble in the dark cauldron of my soul. Mudstorm always got everything that I wanted! Fawncall's love, popularity, and now Jadepaw! Shaking with hatred, I continue my trip to the Shadowed River.
I don't care if you didn't turn me in, brother. We are not friends and we never will be! I'm going to kill you!
The carp I caught got a beating it didn't deserve.
//
My breath came out in shallow puffs and turned into clouds of vapor in the freezing air. From our spot in the mouth of RockClan's cave we watched for danger. Mudstorm was a mere tail length away from me, and I could not take it. Clouds shifted over the moon, shrouding us in darkness.
Kill them both! There's fox on the breeze, tell them one of those creatures attacked. Do it! Do it now! This is your chance.
"Mudstorm,"I mutter, my mew soft.
The spotted tabby didn't move,"This is a silent vigil, Dashpaw."
I hissed, seething,"My name is Dashmoon! You think you're the sun, that you're better than every cat, but the moon has something to tell you,"I lunged and knocked my brother on to his back,"Every star must explode and die one day!"
"Dash-what are you-?"He gagged as I sank my claws into his neck.
Bluefire snarled,"Get off him you traitor! I knew we should have turned you in to Wingstar!" She bit my shoulder and knocked me off of Mudstorm.
Mudstorm crawled away, gasping,"W-Why?"
Bluefire pinned me down, her paw crushing my windpipe. Black dots start to spin around my vision as I struggled to fill my lungs.
"Bluefire, no! Don't kill him!"
Bluefire stared at him with astonishment, and moved her paw to my chest so I'm still pinned. I gulped in the air thankfully, and the blue tabby gave me a scornful glare.
Mudstorm approached me,"What was that for?"
I spat at his face,"You have everything, and I have nothing! It's your fault I'm small, but every cat adores you! You abandoned me like a moon old minnow for her!" I flip my tail at Bluefire,"I. HATE. YOU!"
Mudstorm's golden eyes start to cloud over,"Dashmoon. I'm so sorry. I knew it was my fault you hate you agreed to work with Doveface, because I abandoned you . . ."
He pressed his nose into my cheek,"I'm so sorry."
"Y-You are sor-sorry?"I stutter,"I-I just wanted to hear you say that. That you regretted treating me that way . . ."
"Mudstorm isn't the cat who should be regretting his actions right now,"Bluefire remarked.
"Bluefire!"
"No, Mudstorm. It's true. I've been a horrible brother. I'm sorry for conspiring with Doveface to try and kill you Bluefire,"She snorted and looked away,"I'm sorry for trying to kill you now. I'm sorry for everything I've done to you."
Mudstorm nuzzled me,"I forgive you, Dashmoon. Bluefire?"
She hesitated,"I forgive you. I know that Fawncall is still alive, but she doesn't love you, so it's like the real Fawncall is dead. You know that I know what it feels like to loose your parents, but you felt like you lost your brother, the cat you depended on most." She licked my ear comfortingly.
Mudstorm lifted me up by the scruff,"Well you didn't loose me. I love ya bro!"
"I love you guys too!" I purr loudly, hardly able to contain my joy,"Let's make a pact! We're going to stay friends forever!
Bluefire flicked me in the face with her striped tail,"Great StarClan. Now I have two crazy toms to look after!"
"Hey!" Mudstorm and I both meowed, pretending to be dismayed.
"Dash, can I ask you something?"
I turned to look at my brother, still purring,"What is it?"
He wiggled his nonexistent eyebrows,"Do you love Jadepaw?"
My voice rose to a very untomly octave,"What!? Wh-Why would you say such a thing! Jade and I are just friends!"
Did I seriously just friend zone myself?
Bluefire covered her mouth to keep from laughing(because cats can totally laugh),"Yeah, and Mudstorm and I are mates!"
There was silence.
Then laughter.
"Oh shush, Dash!"Mudstorm squawked, embarrassed.
"ALL OF YOU NEED TO SHUSH OR I'LL MAKE SURE YOU GO ON EVERY PATROL TOMORROW!" Wingstar's booming voice caused all of us, even Bluefire, to squeak in terror and resume our posts.
There was more silence.
Then soft giggling.
I looked up at the still dark sky. The clouds had cleared. The moon was a bright disc of silver light in the purply sky. I closed my tired eyes. I had thought that Wingstar had named me Dashmoon because I was lonely, just like the moon, but I was wrong. The moon had many friends, even though he looked big and out of place with the tiny stars. The bright sun and calm earth would always be there for him. I glanced their way, but they were staring at the sky, too.
So this is how it feels to be loved. It's as great as I had imagined.
