십사: a fragment of a memory

A/N: This chapter explores Aeri's past.

Jung Eunha has always hated Shin Aeri.

"You're going to be a piano prodigy, my dear daughter!" The teacher stands beside Eunha as she played the hardest piece out of all the students. She had practiced so hard to get praised by her strict mother.

"It's decided, I'll choose Eunha to enter the Grand Prix" the middle aged woman clapped her hands together, seemingly pleased.

Everything went well, that is, until another little girl came.

The girl effortlessly skimmed through a few of the world's hardest pieces, and it was obvious she was a music genius.

And all of a sudden, Eunha didn't matter anymore.

Everyone's eyes were fixed on this little girl who did the impossible. Her hands flew through each note with ease, and she was undoubtedly the most talented student the teacher had.

"Aeri, would you enter the Grand Prix with Eunha?" The lady crouches down, smiling sweetly at the girl.

Aeri nods in response, and that was the moment Eunha's life changed.

Eunha worked harder and harder, trying to play pieces that her skill wasn't able to reach. She wanted to be a prodigy - but the thing was, she isn't one.

On the day of the performance, Eunha wasn't able to catch up. The best piece she could play was just a mere simple performance for Aeri.

"Aeri, my knee really hurts" Eunha pretended to cry in pain.

"What's wrong?" Aeri ran over to her, patting her back.

"It hurts, it hurts...." tears were streaming down her face.

"Stay here Eunha, I'll go find the teacher!" Aeri assured her, before running off and disappearing from backstage.

And just like that, Aeri missed her performance.

Eunha was smiling brightly as she received the 1st place for her category. She thought her mother would praise her, but she was wrong.

"What a pity, Aeri could've gotten first" the mother sighs, not knowing that her words had pierced Eunha's heart.

A day after the performance, Aeri was feeling extremely upset. She roamed around, and eventually stopped at the river bank.

There was a little boy, crouching down on the ground. In his hands was a twig, and it seems like he had written some musical notes on the sand.

"Do, re , mi , fa , so!" Aeri read out, crouching down beside him. The little boy turned to her.

"You know how to read them?" A gummy smile appeared on his face.

Aeri nods, and her hands came in contact with his for a moment when she took the twig. The boy was a little flustered, but paid attention to what she wrote on the sand.

"This is....a song?" He began to hum the tune.

"Yeah! I composed it myself" Aeri smiles sweetly at him, and the boy blushes, averting his eyes.

"Do you mind if I add on to the tune? I compose too" the boy fiddled with his hands nervously.

"Let's make a song together then. What's your name?" Aeri tilts her head.

"I don't like my name, it's not cool" the boy frowned.

"Well, where are you from?" Aeri dusted the sand off her flip flops.

"Daegu" he answered.

"I'll call you Daegu Boy" Aeri giggled.

"Seoul Girl" he rolled his eyes.

After Aeri's encounter with the boy, she soon discovered how musically they clicked together. They met at the same time and place everyday, composing a new tune for the song. Slowly but surely, it was almost completed.

On the day when they were supposed to compose the chorus, the boy was late to the meeting. Aeri waited and waited, but he never came.

Just as she was about to go home heavy hearted, she heard a familiar voice calling for her.

"Seoul girl." The boy was on the bridge that was slightly above the river. He leaned over, clutching the railing.

Under the dim evening light, Aeri could make out tears in his eyes.

"I have to go back to Daegu today" the boy stared into her eyes as she looked up at him.

"When will you be coming back?" Aeri felt her heart drop.

"I don't know" the boy's voice got softer and softer.

"Will we meet again?" Aeri was trying to hold back her tears.

The boy nodded, smiling slightly as he held out his pinky.

"Yes, I promise. I'll come back and write the chorus with you" he leans further down so Aeri could lock pinkies with him.

"I had fun" Aeri gave her widest smile, before letting go of his finger. The boy wiped his tears quickly.

"Here, i'll give this to you" the boy pulls out a guitar pick, handing it over to her.

"...goodbye." The boy smiled one last time, running off to the elderly woman waiting at the end of the bridge.

"goodbye, Daegu Boy" she mutters under her breath.

"Where did you learn this piece? It's beautiful" the teacher smiled brightly as Aeri played on the piano. She had began to learn the guitar as well.

"I composed it with someone" she chuckled as she remembered the boy.

All this time, Eunha stood at the side gloomily. Her hatred for Aeri had made her lost interest in doing anything, even piano. She couldn't bring herself to play anymore.

Eunha followed the girl as she walked alone to the river. Aeri knew the boy wasn't going to come anymore, but she still found herself sitting there at the same time and place.

She waited until the girl settled down, before pushing her into the river.

And Eunha watched in horror at what she had done. Aeri couldn't swim, so she was drowning slowly.

Aeri pleaded desperately for help but Eunha abandoned her in the river, running far away from the scene.

"Aeri-ah.....Aeri..." Her mother cried at the side, holding her hand tightly. Her heart pained badly at the sight of her daughter lying unconscious on the hospital bed.

"What do you mean? This can't be..." Her father ruffled his hair frustratedly, tears welling in his eyes.

"I'm sorry sir...." The doctor hung his head low.

"She's lost all her memories."
