Chapter Twenty Two

Ace's silence continued on for weeks. Although, she had improved to a certain extent. She started to acknowledge J when he spoke to her, which was more than enough progress for him. Even though she wouldn't respond, she would at least look at him rather than through him. However, not a minute went by that he didn't miss her smile and her voice. Her beautiful, angelic voice. But this became the norm, and J learned to accept the situation as it was and cherish every glance that Ace gave him.

For Ace, she knew that she was changing more than she let on. On the outside she was constantly neutral. However, on the inside, an immense anger was brewing. Before, she had been sad and upset about what had happened to her. But now, she was furious. And she knew she was capable of snapping any moment, so she remained silent and closed from the world.

One morning, when Ace walked down from her room to get breakfast, she found her father waiting for her. "Ace, baby, we need to talk. Come here." Ace walked over and sat next to her father, keeping a safe distance between them. J sighed and continued. "I need to know exactly what happened to you at Arkham, Ace." Aces eyes widened and she immediately shook her head no. "Come on Ace, please just tell me." Again, Ace refused and she stood up, ready to retreat away once more. But J rose as well, grabbing her wrist and turning her back to face him. "Ace, they obviously broke you to the point of no return, and I need to know how they did it!" This was the moment that Ace was afraid of. The moment that she lost it. The moment that she snapped. She screamed a guttural scream, the first sound that she had made since returning home. She pulled her arm back with all of her force and began slamming her hands on the table. "Ace! Calm down!" But she couldn't calm down. Not after being continuously abused and mistreated. She began throwing and breaking everything in sight, trying to rid herself of this anger and overwhelming pain. J took a step back, knowing better than to interfere with her meltdown. The sight of broken shards of various items did nothing to ease her rage, so she began violently punching the wall over and over, finally feeling her anger subside as it was left in the dent she had made. But she kept going, her hand now numb and battered, but she couldn't stop. Every emotion she had built up needed to come out, regardless of the means. Suddenly, J grabbed her arms and pulled her to the floor, holding her tightly. Holding her broken pieces together, slowly mending her. In her only true companion's arms, Ace felt her anger vanish entirely. Now all she felt was the pain. The immense pain. And she broke down, letting out heart wrenching sobs and screams. For once, J didn't try to stop her. He didn't hush her or whisper sweet nothings into her ear. He let her shriek and cry, because he knew that she had been through so much and that if she didn't purge her emotions she would be even more wrecked than she already was. So he sat there, holding Ace as tightly as he could, listening to his only love scream out all of her hurt and sadness.
