Chapter Twenty One
When Ace returned home, she didn't speak. Not by choice, but by shear incapability. She couldn't bring herself to speak after all that had occurred to her. Along with this, she couldn't feel anything. She should be relieved, distraught, even blatantly terrified. Yet she had a constant since of numbness present. She had become a shell of a person because of those men.
This terrified J. He first noticed the change when she initially woke up. He had run over to her side and hugged her, stroking her hair. However, she didn't hug him back. She sat there, limp, looking past him at nothing in particular. He knew something was wrong, so he pulled back and looked into her eyes. "Ace, honey, please say something." But Ace held her forward stare, barely registering what he had said and completely ignoring it. J's piercing blue eyes no longer held the clarifying power over Ace, she was too far gone.
The silence and distance from the young girl continued on for multiple days when J realized that she was really gone. Sure, she was alive, but not entirely. She would rarely eat, only laying in her bed and staring at the wall. J continuously tried to interact with her, but it was useless.
J's favorite time of the day was night time. This was because at night, Ace would sleep. J would sit in her room and watch her for hours, cherishing the calmness of her features and the lack of pain displayed on her features. He felt as if she was truly at peace in those moments, and it gave him a sense of comfort.
J knew that this time, Ace was truly broken. And he didn't know if he would be able to put her pieces back together.
