Chapter 31

The football game was going in full swing as I sat at the front of the bleachers, my hand with a hot dog while the other had a coke. Since I was Abacus' girlfriend, I got to wear his jacket as I cheered for him. I had always seen other football players' girlfriends wear them, and now I got to be part of it. I see Gina coming towards me in her cheerleading outfit and a scowl on her face. She gets to where I'm sitting and huffs in annoyance, "I can't believe I have to perform at halftime. I hate it. I hate this outfit, hate the stares, and I hate being peppy."

"I don't think anyone thinks you're peppy," Link says as he joins us with more food than he could eat. He had a box with 5 hot dogs, popcorn, candy, and two slushies. Gina turns and gives him a smile.

"Thanks. Warms my heart to know that," she says sarcastically.

"If you hate it, why are you a part of it?"I interject before they start an argument.

"Because it's a family thing," she explains with a shrug. I had never thought much about it, because I always believed she liked it. "My grandma was a cheerleader, my mom was one, my sister was one, and now I have to be one. Go me," she says and raises her pom-poms with a fake smile.

"Why didn't you ever try to be one Amelia?" Link directs the question to me.

"Never called my attention."

He jumps in front of us, "you mean you never wanted to do this." Link precedes to move side by side before Matt joins and sharing a look, they both do a backward flip, leaving me stunned with a wide mouth.

Link grabs the pom-poms from Gina and stands in front of us. "Ready team?"

Since Matt didn't talk, he had to respond too. "Okay." However, at this point, Gina has now entered the group formation. Link moves side by side as the rest follow and waves his hands up. All I can do is laugh before Gina waves me over. I go stand next to her and follow her lead. Hands-on hip, moving side by side, clap.

I could feel the pain in my stomach from the laughter as we stood in front of the crowd. We weren't in eye shot since everyone was focused on the game, and not us. I didn't have a care in the world at the moment, I liked that feeling.

"You're going to steal our spotlight," Sienna says as we all stop. We look at her as she looks at Link and grabs the pom-pom's from him. "These are your's," she gives them back to Gina. She gives me a sympathetic look, "How are you doing Amelia? Still mad that my boyfriend backed me up?"

I can see Gina clench her teeth and her fist, taking one step closer to her. I put my hand on her shoulder and shake my head. "Cute," Sienna responds at her actions, "but I'd be careful Gina. Now hurry, we need you or we're all going to be late."

Gina whispers in my ear, "I wish you would let me hit her. Guess now I have to ruin the performance. Shame." She smiles and squeezes my hand, "catch you later miss Valedictorian." We watch them disappear behind the bleachers as Link and Matt settle down next to me. I look at the boys and hand them a banner I made cheering Abacus and Grayson. It was in simple glitter that said Go Get 'em Abacus and Grayson. I can see the boys smile at the banner before glaring at each other. This only earns me glares from the football boys, girlfriends, and people behind us.

"How did she get Abacus?" the voice says. I recognize that voice and turn around to see Lynett. She gives me a fake smile before continuing with Carter, "more importantly, how is she friends with Grayson?"

"Did you hear what happened in the photograph exhibit?"

"Heard? I was there."

"Don't listen to them," Link tells me and gives me a reassuring smile. I knew they were saying this out loud so I could hear them. I haven't talked to them ever since the day they all accused me as if I had committed perjury by talking to Grayson and his friends. I thought it would pass but now, I wasn't sure. They had stooped so low to criticize me behind my back.

"Everyone is calling her the daddy killer now," Carter says.

"Geez," Lynett pretends to shiver, "I'm glad we cut her off before she literally cut us off." They laugh as if it was the most clever thing ever said.

"How were you ever friends with her? Did she not give you the chills because who knows how many of those diaries with your name are in her house."

That's when I stand up and approach them. Link tries to follow but trips in the process. "If you have something to say, say it to my face."

Lynett purses her lips, "if not? Will you kill me too?"

"You know I didn't kill my dad, Lynett. How could you say that about your friend?"

She shrugs, "I'm not sure who you are anymore and you're not my friend. Haven't been for so long."

"What does that mean?"

"I was glad when you broke it off. It was suffocating being your friend," she says and stands up at this point, as Carter's eyes go wide. "It was always about poor Amelia and getting the grades. I was there, always supporting you, but then that wasn't enough so you got more and left me in the dust.

"Lynett," I say and try to reach my hand out to her. She had a point, I had just given up on our friendship without realizing it.

"Leave me alone, Amelia. Sienna was right when she said you were an attention seeker playing nice." With that, Lynett pushes past me and Carter follows with the same sneer.

I see the message as soon as I sit with the guys again. Seems like I'm not the only one who knows you're a fraud. Two ex-friends are on my side and they don't even know it. I tried to look around for someone who looked incriminating, but it was impossible to find out since the message had been sent when I was arguing with Lynett.

"You okay?" Link asks me.

"Yea," I lied.

The buzzer sounds and the boys come off the field to hydrate as the cheerleaders come out. True to her words, Gina managed to mess up twice on the routine, which earned her a death glare from Sienna. I, on the other hand, could not help but laugh. I wave at Abacus and see Grayson rolls his eyes. I can no longer hold the claustrophobic feeling anymore and say, "Link, I'll be right back."

He gives me a thumbs up and a nod. I wiggle myself out of the bleacher and head to the restroom. I took deep breaths and splashed some cold water on my face. I head out but stop in my tracks at the sound of the familiar voices.

"You're such an idiot," she yells.

"Just pay me what you owe me and I'll leave," he says.

I inch closer to see the people talking and see Lynett arguing with Jace. "Stop being an asshole, I told you I'd pay you back later." Lynett huffs, "you shouldn't even be here and you know that."

"My apologies to your royal highness," Jace mocks. He grabs her wrist and pulls her closer to him. That's when I get closer.

"Leave her alone Jace," I say, summoning as much courage as I can. I knew she had just insulted me, but that didn't matter when she needed help.

"Amelia," he says fondly. "A pleasure seeing you again."

"Jace let my friend go," I told him.

"We're not friends anymore," Lynett says.

Jace perks up an ear at the juicy gossip, "Oh?" He lets go of her, "girl fights can be so messy, huh. Besides, I won't hurt my favorite customer. She owes a lot because of her father. What a dutiful daughter," he adds in admiration. Lynett glares at him and Jace just snarls at her. I didn't know much about Lynett's father, since she never liked to talk about it. What she had told me was that he was in jail because he got caught doing drugs. That was the type of friendship we had, neither of us talked about painful things, and we were okay with that.

"Just leave, I'll pay you back tomorrow," Lynett huffs.

"That's all you had to say," Jace says with his sadistic smirk. He walks towards me with his smile and I narrow my eyes. "I've always liked you, Amelia. I hope we see more of each other, soon." He pauses and adds with a wink, "I think we will."

He doesn't say anything else but walks away. I turn to Lynett and grab her wrist, inspecting it.

"Are you okay?"

She pulls it away and fixes her jacket, "I'm fine. Leave me alone."

"How about you stop worrying about my friends and worry about not stealing my boyfriend," Sienna says as she approaches us. "Lynett doesn't need you anymore, she has me. I wouldn't abandon her for other people." Sienna approaches Lynett and hands her a cup of soda. Lynett seems to know what to do and I know what to expect. I knew Lynett's personality and knew that if Sienna wanted to be mean to me, Lynett would be too. She was a follower, not a leader.

"Our friendship really will be over if you do this, Lynett,'' I try to reason but like clockwork, she dumbs the sticky liquid on me.

"Also, I know you're going to the ball with my boyfriend, so I'd be careful about how much closer you're getting. Don't forget you have a boyfriend of your own." Sienna gives me a smile and grabs onto Lynett who just shrugs and they walk away like the mean girls I turned them into. I can't help but wonder what I had done wrong. I just never thought our friendship would end this way.

I didn't go back because I'd have to explain what happened to everyone and why I didn't defend myself. Nor did I want any more drama happening. So, I sent a quick message stating that I was tired and if they could tell Abacus I was sorry.

When I reached my house, there was a box sitting outside with an envelope attached, my name written in cursive. I hesitantly grabbed it, afraid it was the anonymous person sending me something, but I think the person had enough fun for some time. I reach my room and take out the content of the box. It was a beautiful black and gold dress. The top was a black velvet color, off-the-shoulder style, while the bottom was gold in a balloon style that reached the floor with black roses all around it. I see a pair of black heels to go along with it. I'm shocked by everything so lavishing and expensive. Setting everything down carefully, I open the envelope and read the letter. "I hope you accept these as gifts and wear them proudly to my ball. I look forward to meeting the girl my son is smitten with." I look at the signature, "AA."
