Twenty Three: Work
It's a familiar feeling.
Cheek to cheek, pressed into the pillow beneath my head. An arm underneath my waist and resting just over it. Legs tangled with mine.
My hands are curled against his chest. He's breathing evenly and softly. So; he's still asleep.
I smile slightly, enjoying the moment. We didn't really talk last night- I was watching TV when he climbed back through my window- but being so near to him again felt good.
Off in the distance, outside of my bedroom, I hear multiple crashes and the sound of footsteps. Before I can pull away or yell out, my bedroom door opens.
"Venny, we've got the best n-...Holy shit!"
"Ginger, get out!" I yell, pulling away so I don't deafen Jason. He frowns but doesn't open his eyes.
"What about us?" I hear Taylor's voice. I turn slightly, to see him, Nicky, Telysha and Angel at my door.
"Out!" I snap. They scuffle out the door and close it. I sigh and squeeze my eyes shut, burying my face into the mattress and pulling away from Jason.
"You have a lot of friends," he comments. His voice sounds so utterly, perfectly sexy from being asleep.
"They're idiots... but yeah, they're important," I mumble into the sheet tiredly. He laughs, moving to drape an arm over my waist. I shuffle closer.
"I'm s-sorry, we were supposed to talk," he struggles out. This must be extremely awkward for him. No wonder why. He's probably never had to talk about this.
Wait.
"Have you ever had a girlfriend before?" I ask, grinning and leaning my hand on my elbow. He frowns in thought for a moment.
"Kalie doesn't count?"
"Nope."
"Two girls I went on a date each with in high school?"
"No."
"Then no, I haven't."
He rests his hands behind his head. I nod slowly, laying on my back and staring at the roof. Wow. He's so unbelievably attractive, it's crazy that he's never been in a relationship.
"Where... does this even go from here?" He mumbles. A relationship, you dick.
"Where do you want it to go?" I ask.
"Where do you want it to go?" He replies.
Oh my God.
"Somewhere," I reply absent-mindedly. He's watching me silently for a while. I feel something deep down; something negative, like I know what he's about to say.
"You know I can't do that," he says softly, almost a whisper. "With the Hood...you could get hurt. You've got a busy life, I do. We just...wouldn't work."
I want to protest, but he's right. I work all day, he works all night. We're on pretty opposite sides of the law. He's rough-as-guts but I adore the finest of things.
"You're right," I answer, looking at him and giving a simple smile. I lean over and kiss him gently, gracing his cheek with my fingertips.
"I'll...I'll see you around," he says, before sitting up and turning away. I take a deep breath and sink back into the pillows, closing my eyes as he gets dressed.
I hear him grab his helmet from the floor. He stops, silent for a moment. I open my eyes and glance at him. He's watching me carefully, like he wants to say something.
"If you ever need help with a case... let me know." Oh.
"Thanks," I smile. He nods, turns and leaves through my window.
I pull myself from my usual right side of the bed. I stretch, stand and walk into the closet. I begin grabbing clothes for a day at the office.
For a while I do well to ignore the sad feeling in my chest. Only when I'm in the shower do I allow little tears to build in my eyes. Maybe it was just the water.
I get dressed and walk out to see the apartment empty. I check my phone.
'Will tell you good news at work. Taylor and the other came by with breakfast in fridge. Hurry in. xx :P'
I don't bother to text Telysha back. Instead I grab the shop waffles out of the fridge and eat them quickly, scanning over the news paper someone had brought.
Yet another bank robbery thwarted by the Bat. Wonder which gang it was this time? I suppose I'll find out when I get to work.
On my way down in the elevator, I call my dad.
"Put it down. Menolly. Put it down. Hello pumpkin!" He says upon answering.
"Hey Dad. Tell Nolly I said hi."
"Your sister says hi- Menolly put my gun down now."
"Hey Skye!" My sister yells.
"That's not my name," I snap.
"Right. Hey Venus!"
"Are you alright?" My Dad begins, background noise of wherever he is fading. I assume he's walked away.
"I'm fine."
He makes the sound of a buzzer, "Wrong answer! When you say I'm fine, it means the opposite! What is it? Your job? Fear of being attacked? A boy? A girl?"
"No Dad I'm not gay!"
"Are you sure? You didn't want to marry Hiroshi."
"I'm sure, Dad!"
He chuckles. Oh, he's joking
"What's really going in, pumpkin?" His tone changes. I sit in the front seat of the lambo and take a deep breath.
"Can you said me two cars please? The Venom and the Jag were destroyed."
"Sure, what do you want?"
"Something flash. Surprise me?"
"Let's see... the boys just did a raid over in Mother Russia. There were some cars from there. You can have the green Generation 5 Dodge Viper and the orange Corvette?"
"Green and orange? Mmm....fine."
"Good! Now what's really wrong?"
"I love you Dad. I'm driving now, so I'll talk to you later."
Before he can ask again, I hang up and place my phone in my bag, before pulling out of the parking lot. Its easier, because now there is two empty spaces.
The drive to work is normally short, but it drags on. I can't wait to get back into it. I park and climb out, nearly jogging over to the lift.
"Hold the door!" I hear a voice yell. I block the lift from closing as a familiar face sprints in next to me.
"DA Meadow! You're back." I look at the man beside me.
"Christian," I greet. He's an assistant of mine alongside Telysha.
"How are you?"
"I'm fine, thank you. Yourself?"
"Looking forward to things being back to normal," he grins charmingly. Yes, he is very handsome. Short, spiky blonde hair, brown eyes, pearly teeth, broad shoulders and a tan.
Physically of perfection, yes, but he's a clean-cut good boy. Not my type.
"Good, I'm the same." The door opens. I step onto the floor and am nearly deafened by office cheers. What kind of staff cheers for the return of their boss?
I make my way to my office, being congratulated and whatnot.
"Good Morning DA Meadow. Today you have nine cases and three meetings. Is there anything to add to your itinerary?" A voice- not my secretary Leona's -says.
My head snaps to the desk, where a heavily pregnant Leona sits. Beside her is Kalie, dressed very neatly. She fits in perfectly.
I smile brightly at her and she grins back. "Kalie came in early. You chose very well- she's a fast learner," Leona comments.
"I knew I did. May I have the files on the first three cases?"
"Of course." Kalie turns her chair to the filing cabinet. She counts down the draws and opens one.
"Good," Leona encourages. It takes a few seconds, but she removes three correct files and hands them to me.
"Well done," I compliment. I walk into my office and close the door, sliding down it with a heavy sigh. That in itself was exhausting; walking in. I'm way out of workplace shape.
I drag myself to my desk and begin reviewing my first three cases.
Yet, always on my mind, is him.
