Twenty Six: Not Catching A Break

I'm on the beach writing this guys xD

"Sneaky of you to book this," I grin at Jason. With my hand in his, we walk down the city streets of Gotham.

"Guess I'm lucky Kalie's your secretary."

It's an indescribably, invigorating feeling to be so close and in contact with him. I'm not a very short girl, I'm quite tall, but he still towers over me even when I'm wearing heels.

"So where are we going?" I ask, glancing around to make sure there were no reporters or cameramen.

"There," he points up ahead across the street. A vegan café. He is literally taking me to a vegan café.

"Really?" I question softly, shocked by how out of character that is for him. He lets go of me and shoves his hands in his pockets.

"Yeah," he murmurs, obviously embarrassed. At that moment he was totally adorable. I grin and lean up to kiss his cheek.

He glances down at me, surprised, before caressing my face and leaning down to kiss me. I want to push him away -I mean we're literally in the middle of the sidewalk- but my arms refuse to.

Smiling, I let him press his lips to mine as I run my hands up his chest, gripping his black leather jacket. He pulls away slowly, leaning his forehead on mine.

"C'mon," I say, holding his hand again as we cross the road.

I've been to this café a fair few times. Sometimes Leona would get my lunch from there too.

It's decorated with blue and green colours inside, house plants all over the place with animal rights posters littering one wall.

"DA Meadow!" The owner greets. No idea what his name is, but he recognises me. "The usual?"

"Times two," I smile. He nods and walks back into the kitchen. I lead Jason over to a table near the back, away from the windows. We take our seats.

"What did you do this morning?"

"Two cases. Won the first, the second has not been decided," I say.

"Do you need help with it?"

My expression twists in thought. "You tell me. A gang leader, Coviar, ordered the destruction of a government owned building simply because one of the workers there owed him. That building was to be turned into a power plant specifically for crime alley."

Jason nods slowly. "Well I won't lie. Coviar is one of mine."

"I guessed as much," I admit. I'm worried that maybe this would get in the way of... us. "You didn't... order the destruction of it, did you?" I ask quietly.

He gives a relaxed smile. "No, but I'll see if I can get something on it for you."

Thank God, "Thank you," I smile.

My usual is brought to us. "Vegetarian chilli with quinoa," the waiter grins, placing two bowls down. I watch Jason carefully with a small smirk.

"You don't have to eat it," I grin. He sighs and grabs a fork. I do the same, smiling at him in complete and utter adoration.

"You're late," Leona says when I walk back into work.

"Sorry, got distracted," I say.

"I'm aware. It's on Juice From Jess."

I freeze at my office door. Jessica, that creepy gossip reporter who was the first to report on Jason and I.

"She's caterwauling on about you and Jason," Kalie says. I sigh heavily and bang my head against my door.

"What do I have now?"

"Press conference in a half hour."

I screw my nose up and step into my office, shutting the door behind me.

I love my office. It's very large and quite a walk from the door to my desk. The wall behind my desk is a full window, allowing me to look over the city.

The wall between mine and Kalie's offices is solid, so gladly not see through.

This was Harvey Dent's office, during his day. I lost count of the amount of times I was in here with him, his advice always encouraging me.

He's actually in Arkham right now. Maybe I should visit him soon. Wouldn't be the first time and I miss him dearly.

I spend the next half hour prepping my speech for the press conference. Just explaining the very basic process of being targeted by the sons and the brotherhood.

Hopefully I've covered all bases. Kalie knocks on my door, telling me it was time to go. With some pushing, I manage to convince her to come with me. It'll be good for her to see what it's like.

"I like my usual driver. He's very kind and I remember his name; Marvin. If I remember someones name, they're important," I say, as we walk out onto the street.

The normal black car that Marvin drives is on the curb, however a girl of Asian descent stand by it.

"DA Meadow, I'm here to escort you to your press conference. Marvin could not be here today," she says.

I freeze on the spot. Marvin never absent from escorting.

"Where is he?"

"He is ill today." I can not help but think she looks vaguely familiar. "My name is Yokisu. Please," she smiles, opening the door.

I climb in, on alert. Maybe anyone else would be reluctant. If I want to find out who she really is, I'll need to see where she's going to take me.

Kalie slides in beside me.

"I was suppose to ask, do you know how to fight?" I enquire when 'Yokisu' shuts the door.

"Um, sort of. Street style. Give me a baseball bat and I'll be fine," she laughs. Wish I had a bat on me.... pun not intended.

I have a small handgun in my bag. This is Gotham; who doesn't?

The drive begins. I mentally map every turn the car takes. So far it's the same route Marvin would take. I keep close to Kalie, just in case.

"Where is this conference happening?" I ask.

"The city hall," she answers. Bruce, the mayor and the Commissioner will be present too.

I reach into my bag and take my phone out, opening up the map application. I search for navigation to city hall. Kalie opens her mouth, but I bump her arm slightly and she stays silent.

We both watch the arrow representing our position move through the streets. I zoom out and see the city hall. We begin moving away from it.

Kalie looks at me with panic in her eyes. I reach down and press my seatbelt open, before doing the same to hers. We turn onto an empty street.

I glance up into the mirror. 'Yokisu' does the same. It is at that moment I see the dark, clouding anger in her eyes.

Quick as the Flash I reach over Kalie and open the door. "Head in, roll!" I yell, grabbing her and shoving the both of us out of the car.

She screams as we tumble onto the road; I take the most damage up my back and along my cheek. My phone and bag go it opposite directions from me.

"Up. Get up!" I snap at Kalie, jumping to my feet just as someone grabs my upper arm. I turn only to have a fist collide with my face, right where it had been dragged over the road.

She takes another swing but I block it, reaching forward with my other hand to grip her shove her against the side of the car. I draw back and punch her in the nose. I try to strike again but she ducks and barrels forward, knocking me on my ass. Thank God I wore pants today. I kick her off hard and backwards-roll, coming into a kneeling position, readying to fight.

"Venus-"

"Stay back," I growl at Kalie without looking up. Yokisu gets into a stance similar to mine. "Who are you?" I ask.

"Could ask the same of you. You have changed your name, Skyler," she replies, accent heavy.

"You are from Lightway," I confirm. She only smirks. "Yakuza," I add on.

"I guess you'll never know," she suddenly springs up on one leg, spinning through the air towards me.

I flip backwards to kick her whilst she is in the air, dragging her down. I land back on my feet and turn to kick her again, a head shot this time.

As she begins flipping backwards I start a kick sequence, hitting her three times out of seven. I reach my bag and rip out my gun, cocking it and pointing at her.

Before she can act on that there is a second gun pointed at her head. I struggle not to smile at Red Hood, standing beside her.

If I had blinked, I'd miss the move she used to get out of his line or fire. She leaps on the roof of a car behind her and springs up onto the balcony of the next building.

On instinct I fire and it hits her thigh. Stumbling, she disappears into the shadows.

"Are you okay?" Red asks me at the same time as I ask Kalie. She nods slowly, looking a little distraught at what she has witnessed.

"I'm fine," I smile tightly at Red Hood. "Kalie, call Commissioner Gordon from my cell." She nods and despite shaking, approaches my bag.

"It's not here," she murmurs. I frown down at her. Oh no. I am overcome with dread.

"She took my phone."
