Twenty Five: Advice
This time, Jason wakes up first. He's happy to find his fingers laced with Venus'. She is on her stomach, hair fanning over her back.
Jason however is staring up at the over-hanging of her bed. He decides not to let go of her hand.
The smallest of smiles visible, he reaches over and touches some of her mahogany locks. Most girls he slept with looked like shit in the morning; Venus was beautiful.
"You usually stare at me all morning?" She suddenly asks, maintaining stillness. Her vibrant sky-coloured eyes snap open to meet Jason's. She smiles.
"Good morning," he mumbles, propping his head up on his elbow.
"Hi," she grins, moving for him. Jason reaches out and runs a hand through her hair again, kissing her at the same time.
"What time do you start today?"
"8:00am. I probably won't be home until ten tonight though, again."
"Do you take a break during the day?"
"Not usually." He looks down at Venus in surprise.
"You work that long every day without a break?" He asks seriously. She rolls her eyes.
"It's not how you're thinking. Sometimes I'm at my desk doing paperwork, other times I'm in court, then I might be investigating, at meetings, press conferences... lots of things, really. But like in most fields, there's always paperwork. Usually the last three hours of the day."
Jason stares at her for a moment, before a smile appears on his face. "No wonder everyone in Crime Alley loves you."
"If everyone in Crime Alley loves the DA, the DA's doing a bad job," she laughs. He chuckles and pushes his arm underneath her shoulders. Venus warmly curls into the action.
"I'm serious. They're used to being cheated out of a fair trial, because they haven't got much to offer. You focus on the case, not the class. You're really good at what you do."
Aware that her face was red, Venus looks down with a sheepish grin. "Thanks." Jason nudges her chin up gently and kisses her.
Venus absent-mindedly notices that Jason is quite cuddly and affectionate in the morning. "Kalie did beautifully yesterday by the way."
He smiles, "I hoped she would. She's too smart to be at that bar forever."
"Definitely."
Turning away, Venus reaches over the side of the bed to grab her thigh-length robe. Jason trails his finger tips up her tattooed spine.
"I'm going to get another one, by the way," she mumbles, tying her pale purple robe and standing up.
"Where?"
"Here," she points to her right thigh. "I don't know what yet but I'm feeling pretty blank." He laughs and shakes his head.
"I should probably go." You could at least stay for breakfast.
"Okay. I'll see you later," Venus smiles, climbing on the bed again to kiss him. He runs his fingers over her waist for a moment, enjoying the feeling of the silk material.
Pulling away, Venus begins walking towards the bathroom. "Hey," Jason began before he could stop himself. Venus looked over her shoulder at him.
"How many assistant attorneys do you have?"
"Six in total."
"Do you put the same pressure on them that you put on yourself?"
Venus turns around fully. Jason is making her think. Both are glad they've reached such a point.
"Pressure on myself?" She questions. Jason smiles.
"No one deserves a fourteen hour day." Venus laughs softly.
"Sometimes they make me feel like if I don't do something and they do it instead, it'll turn out wrong."
Jason nods slowly, relating to her with concerns to being Robin and being Red Hood. "Have you given them the chance to prove they can do it?"
"Plenty. Everyone time they've shown me something."
"What?"
"They can't handle it."

"Good morning DA Meadow. Today you have have a press conference, seven cases, two meetings and a lunch break. Is there anything to add to your itinerary?" Kalie says. Leona is still there.
I freeze.
"Lunch break?"
"Yes," Kalie smiles. I see something shady in her grin. "With Mr Jason Todd."
"And when was that booked?"
"He called 8:30 this morning. Is there anything to add?"
"Yes, I'd like to see all the assistants in my office in one hour." With that, I turn to my door and open it, walking in to my office.
When I close it, I can't help the grin that forms on my face. We're going to have lunch together... I place my bag down and take out files on the seven cases today.
As I begin reviewing them I remember what I was suppose to ask Kalie. I reach over and press the button on my phone.
"Can you please book a Saturday afternoon appointment for me at the Bluemount Tattoo parlour?" I request.
"Duh-...Uh, sure! I'll get right on that," she replies. "Miss Lion is here to see you." On cue Telysha opens up my door.
"I'm seeing you in an hour, what do you want?" I imagine her as being the nerd that went the extra mile on projects and was always ahead.
"Are you taking the advice I gave you? Giving us a shot?"
"Your advice was helpful I suppose. Someone else helped me realise, however, that there's work I could give you and the others that will help you prove yourselves. Now, go away."
Telysha looks at me skeptically, but backs away. "Who gave you this legendary advice?" She asks. I find myself smiling coyly. My boyfriend, I want to tell her. I opt out. "Someone I trust."
When the hour passed, the six assistants came in. Telysha, I think the other guy is Christian, maybe the other one is Mariska?... the smart dude with the black hair, the tough girl with authority issues and the old man.
Man, my memory really is fucked.
"How many cases are you each handling at the moment?" I begin. They answer with multiple numbers I don't really care about. "I want each of you to take on at least two more." I reach over and press my phone button. "Kalie may I have my comprehensions of all active cases to this date that I am involved in or are in process."
"Bringing them now," she replies.
"Your secretary, is she single?" Smart dude with black hair asks. I look at him with a serious expression. He bows his head silently as everyone else gives him the same look.
Kalie walks in and hands me the small stack. I thank her and place them in the centre of my desk.
"You'll all take two, or more," I say, spreading them like a fan.
Telly, being herself, takes six. Christian grabs four. Mariska, other girl and old man take three. Dark-haired dude only takes two. Weak shit.
"Now, get out. I want a full report on the oldest case you have by tomorrow night," I say. They shuffle out the door. I really need to learn their names.
"Kalie, can you come here please?" I call out, seeing as the door is open. She appears in the doorway.
"I need you to do some research. Top lawyers in the city who might want to join the big leagues- meaning the DA's office. Do you think you could do that? Leona will help you."
"Of course," she smiles. "You and Mr Nowski have a case in half an hour. Would you like the file now?"
"Yes please. And for the case after that, then I'll be back. For lunch." Kalie tries to hide her grin before she disappears. She returns with my files.

I win my first case with the old guy -Liam, Leonard, Layton, or something- easy; 25 to life for the murder of a twenty one year old man. Second with Telysha was much harder, over destruction of government property by a street gang. Being rich for the wrong reasons, they had good lawyers.
I'm in the lift alone on my way up to my office, when I get a call from Kalie. "I'm in the lift now. Is he waiting?"
"N-No, but someone is."
"Who?"
She doesn't need to answer as the doors open, revealing Taylor, Grace, Nicky and Jay waiting for me outside my office. No. No.
Taylor obviously just got off work, wearing an extremely loud, out there suit that Grace must have made for him on her line Graci (Gra-Chi).
Jay seems almost the same, donning an almost sparkling golden sports jacket. Nicky and Grace were dressed nicely too. Where do they think they're taking me?
"Hey! We're taking you out for lunch!" Grace grins. I give Kalie a weary look as I rush into my office.
"Your secretary's such a sweetie Venny!" Someone says, I don't know or care who because all I can think about is them freaking out over how hott Jason is.
"I can't go with you to lunch," I say.
"Why not."
"I already have plans for lunch."
There's a split second of silence. I block my ears and close my eyes as their raging begins. Unfair and pointless. They should have called first.
Even though my fingers repressed against my ears, I distinctively hear them all stop at once. I guess what the means immediately.
I look to my door way to see Jason standing there, dressed much nicer than usual. All four gawk at him, glancing between myself and the door.
"We are so sorry!" Taylor says immediately.
"Another time!" Grace adds.
"And we'll call first," in-puts Jay quickly.
"He's hott," Nicky throws in at the end. The other three turn simultaneously to glare at her. I can only pinch the bridge of my nose and stare anywhere but at them. "Get out," I mumble. I'm telling a lot of people to do that lately.
"Bye Venny!" Three of them squeal, grinning widely at Jason as they walk out the door.
"You're going to hit that hard, right?" Nicky leans down to whisper.
"Just go," I try to sound annoyed, but end up laughing at the end. Nicky leaves smirking like a cat.
My office is largely silent after that. I grin at Jason. He looks surprised. "I thought you ere mad at them, for real," he says. I roll my eyes.
"That'd be like a pet lover being angry at his own puppies," I murmur. I stand up, my jacket still on from when I left.
Jason holds his hand out to me. I may be twenty four but I'm blushing like a thirteen year old girl. I take his hand and he doesn't let go as we walk through the office.
The media will have a field day.
