Twenty: Cold Goodbye

I was crying and I didn't know why.

Maybe crying isn't the way to put it... more like, tears are filling my eyes as I neatly fold the clothes from the Kitten's Closet, placing them on the bed.

Why did this have to happen.

For the last three days, Batman had been interrogating the members of the Sons and the Brotherhood, to find out where their hideout was.

Whilst he was investigating, most of my time was spent in Jason's arms. Cheesy sounding, yes, but if we weren't in bed, on the couch talking, in the kitchen cooking or drinking...well that's all we did really.

At one point he even took my to the bar to meet Kalie properly. She's kind of obsessed with me. Apparently I disallowed a case to go ahead that would have prosecuted her father.

Any other times, I was watching TV or writing notes whilst Jason was out being Red Hood.

Then, not an hour ago, things had completely broken down.

-One Hour Earlier-

"A dress?"

"A dress!"

"And no one noticed?"

"Well we guessed that everyone thought he was just an ugly girl," I explain to Jason.

I was telling him a story about my friend JJ, and what happened when we, Telysha and Angel had spent the weekend in Vegas.

JJ had been excessively drunk and walked into the casino in one of Angel's dresses. Yes, it was something to remember.

Anyway, it was the middle of the day and we were both on the couch, talking. There wasn't really much to do since all of the evidence had been taken with Batman.

So we were just speaking again, only this time we weren't drunk.

"Something been distracting you," he suddenly says. So he noticed?

"Just a couple things. Mostly how much I miss my friends, and my garden." Jason smiles slightly at that.

"You sure it's just that?" He suddenly asks, sounding pretty serious. No. It's not. I want to know what it is we have.

"No," I say lightly. "But it doesn't matter."

I smile and stand up, walking towards the kitchen. It would have been the time to do it. To talk and find out what's really happening.

"Is it about this. Us?"

I freeze on the spot. Does he want to talk about this?

"Uh, yeah. It is."

I hear him get up. He strides passed me into the kitchen. "Well it's been fun, right?" He says casually. Oh... "Like I said before. Just fucking."

He has his back facing me. I'm stuck where I am. Frozen by his words. He turns around. I don't think I have an expression on my face, but he grins in vain.

"What? Did you think we were in a relationship?" He smirks. It hurts, very much. He's being an asshole again.

"That would be impossible," I say quietly.

"Why? Because you don't do criminals?" He mocks. I'm still emotionless.

"No. I don't do dead guys. I'm not a necrophiliac."

It's probably one of the meanest things I've said in my whole life and by far the meanest thing I've ever said to him. He's as still as me now and I think I've hurt him.

To the right on the table, a com beeps. "Red Hood, it's Nightwing. We've got them. We're executing an assault within the next hour. Come to the cave now."

Jason presses something in his ear. "Got it," he says. Then it's silent again. I open my mouth to say something. I don't know what, maybe an apology.

"You can keep the clothes. Pack your shit and when I send someone to escort you, get the fuck out and stay the fuck away from me," he says lowly.

I feel my chest convulsing. My eyes water and I spin around before he can see. "Fine," I say softly, before walking into my room.

I close the door and slide down it with a shaky breath. If I had any chance of him turning around and being open to a relationship, I have killed it now.

-Present-

They had found the hideout of the Sons and the Brotherhood. Red Hood, Batman, Nightwing, Robin, Red Robin, Bluejay, Batgirl and all of the other heroes involved are raiding it now.

So I'm packing.

There's nothing to pack, really. I take my handbag which I had got when I first came to stay with him. Then, the bag Ginger brought to me on her first visit.

I take one outfit from the Kitten's Closet clothes. A black pencil dress, ripped stocking, combat boots and a black nylon jacket. That should allow me to get through downtown without look suspicious.

My hair is still purple but mahogany re-growth is obvious. I put it in a ponytail. I throw out anything else related to me, for his sake perhaps.

After that I find myself sitting on the sofa with my bags.

I wonder when I'll see him again. Maybe soon, maybe in a year; maybe never. All I know is that I definitely did want to see him at some point.

With that, I decide not to 'wait' for him to send someone. I walk to the front door. Just before I turn the handle I look over my shoulder at the apartment. Strangely, I think I'll miss this place as well.

Just as I pull the door open, I come face-to-face with Kalie.

"Hi," she smiles.

"Uh, hey... You looking for Jason?"

"No I'm doing him a favour. While he's out I'm supposed to drive you home. I was so excited I couldn't possibly say no!" She grins.

"Well, alright then," I smile, closing the door.

Kalie really is very pretty. Her eyes are a  warm chocolate colour and her hair is very sleek and neat. She looks like a gem surrounded by rocks in this suburb.

She has a very crummy looking mustard-coloured car. "It's not the best but it gets me around."

"That's all that matters," I smile, getting into the passenger seat. Her car smells like toast. She climbs into the drivers and pulls out onto the empty road.

"So I have to ask. Do you have any ambitions or...goals?" I ask lightly.

"To get the hell out of downtown," she laughs. "I want to get a job that will allow me to move into the city, get a better car. A better life, really."

"How did you end up at the bar?"

"When I was a kid my family- that's my parents -were killed in an accident. I was passed off to distant relatives. They owned the bar. They weren't very loving, but they taught me a lot. I'm smarter than I seem," she laughs.

"What kind of work would you do in the city?" I ask, an idea forming in my head.

"Anything. I just want out, you know?"

"Yeah... what about being a secretary?"

"Oh that would suit! I'm the only one who uses the computer for finances and stuff. But I doubt anyone would hire an assistant who's from here and worked at a bar."

Oh really? "The DA might."

The car veers slightly as Kalie's head snaps towards me."R-Really?" She says.

"My current one is pregnant and will be leaving soon. It's not a particularly hard job since I have the DA Assistants too. It'll be organising my day, answering phones, filing- but it pays well and you could move." I watch her.

Back in Lightway, my father had fervently drilled into us that it's right to give everyone an opportunity if you have it. I also know what it's like to be stuck in the worst area of town.

Suddenly Kalie's eyes are tearing up. "I've never had an opportunity before," she says with a laugh. "Are you sure?"

"Of course I am. I feel like you'd do well. What do you say?"

I laugh at her expression, because she seems generally speechless. It's good to do kind things like this once in a while.

I direct her to my apartment. I live on the far side of the city, ways away from the worse side of town. My apartment is the penthouse of it's building.

"Come up with me. I have some paperwork for you," I say as she pulls up. I walk into the car park, spotting my beautiful gold Lambo.

"I missed you," I whisper, touching the bonnet. I lead Kalie up to my apartment. As there is one room per floor, the elevator opens straight to my living room.

It smells like cleaning product. I assume my cleaner had still come by every three days. What a sweetie.

Switching the lights on revealed my grandeur dining room and kitchen. "Woah," I hear Kalie say, looking around like she was in a palace.

"I'll just get those papers," I smile. I go through the apartment, switching on all of the lights. I reach my office and take out a file of forms.

Once upon a time my house had been all I had cared about. Now it just felt empty and pointless. It never felt like this before...

"Here you go," I smile, handing the file to her.

"So  just fill these out and bring them to you?" She asks.

"Yeah. Here's my number. Call to see where I am," I say, writing it on the corner of the file. Kalie stares at the manilla folder for a while.

"I finally have a chance," she mumbles. Her eyes began tearing up. "I should uh- I should let you get re-settled in your home. I'll call you," she goes on. "Thank you so much," she holds her arms out to me.

"It's my pleasure," I grin, hugging her. Before she walks back into the elevator, she turns to me.

"You and Jas. Are you guys a thing now?" She asks. I feel a small stab in my chest.

"No. He made it very clear that he didn't want that," I say. She looks confused.

"But he asked me about being in a relationship with you..." She trails off, confused. I shrug.

"He changed his mind."
