Thirty One: Happiness

It's windy.

The air rushes through my fringe, pressing against my mask.

I stand in the rubble of a broken building, the sun just rising turning the clouds yellow and pink.

In my ears I hear a loud, high pitch ringing. It's annoying and growing in volume.

A woman is there, across from me. She has familiar looking green eyes and brown hair. Familiar. So familiar.

Louder and louder the ringing grows.

There are tears on her cheeks as she stares at me. Her shirt is blood-soaked and her skin has been ripped away from the bone.

I am afraid of the expression in her eyes.

Louder.

"You," she finally whispers. "You."

Me?... Did I do this?

A smile appears on her face. "You."

The wind and the ringing stops all at once. I gasp when I awaken, sitting shot up. My hands are shaking and my heart is thrumming at the speed of a bullet train.

I look down at Jason, still asleep beside me.

What a weird dream. That woman looked so familiar, but I can't place her. And her injuries were familiar...was she someone I had killed?

Quietly as to not wake Jay up, I slide out of bed and walk across the room to the door. I leave for the kitchen.

After pouring some wine I take a seat on the kitchen stool.

It's been just over a month since Jason and I have been together.

If I remember correctly, I had never been this happy before. Not sprinting across rooftops as Sugar Skull, not when I received my degree, not even with Hiroshi.

It has to mean more than normal if we feel the way we do at this stage, right? It's not 'just like everyone else's'. It's more.

"Venus?" I hear Jason call out from my bedroom.

"Kitchen," I say back, taking a sip. In a few seconds he's in the doorway. I smile. "Bad dream."

He nods and walks over, gently placing his lands on my thighs. "You okay?" He asks.

I twist my expression for a moment. That woman's face is haunting me. "Not really. There was this woman. She looked familiar but I... can't place her."

He nods slowly, not looking directly at me.

"What did she look like?"

"Green eyes. I think she had brown hair. She was pretty, and young," I admit. Jason just nods, moving to lace our fingers together. "What time is it?"

"1:00am. You want to go back to bed? Or we could watch TV, or whatever," he mumbles. He sounds tired, but also embarrassed at the sweet notion he is making.

"I don't really feel like sleeping," I sigh. "But you can, if you want."

Reaching out, he tucks some of my hair behind my ear. "Nah, not without you," he smiles, kissing my cheek. He pulls me up to stand. "I um...I bought you something. I was going to give it to you tomorrow- today, but since we're up; I'll go and get it from my car. Wait up here?"

"Sure, can I have a shower?"

"Yeah," he kisses my forehead before walking into my room. He gets dressed as I walk into my wardrobe and take out some casual clothes.

After I'm dressed and showered, I walk back out into the livingroom...where I find Jason...with a plastic tree...

"Uhh..." I begin. He spins around. Did he buy me a christmas tree?

"You said you didn't have one, so I thought I'd buy one. What do you think?" He steps back, revealing he has done the bottom of the green tree.

He has also bought decorations. I find myself smiling.

"Oh my God, yes," I grin, striding across the room to kiss him. He seems relieved at my reaction and pulls me close, turning to look at the tree.

"Shall we?"

I nod excitedly and go straight for the box of branches. We kneel down and separate them into levels.

"I've only done this a few times. When I was a kid we moved around so much we didn't have much of an opportunity," I say, pulling the branches apart so they fan out.

I take one pile and jump up, circling the centre post and filling the next row.

"I've done it a few times. The best was probably when Dick, Alfred and I set up a tree in every room in the manor. Sometimes...Bruce would help," he says from the other side of the tree. His words make me smile.

We finish building the tree. Jason had done the bottom level, so we continue adding to it, revealing that it is seriously tall.

However this

"This is my favourite part. Tinsel first, right?"

"Right," he smiles.

I grab an armful of red tinsel and settle one end at the bottom level, before I begin circling the tree, trying to spread the tinsel evenly.

It gets to the point where for once in my life I am too short to reach. Jason suddenly grabs me from behind and hoists me up. I let out an embarrassing squeak.

He rests me on his shoulder like I'm nothing.

"Really?" I grin.

"Hey? I may as well parade you around right?" He laughs. I can't control my laughing as he walks around the tree. I'm trying to keep the tinsel spun evenly.

When we finish on that he jars his shoulder. I gasp as I feel myself fall, before he catches me. I let out a sigh of relief.

"Ass," I smile, pushing off of him and immediately reaching for the silver and green baubles. "You do the green ones and I'll do the red ones," I say. He nods and takes a box.

We begin hanging them up, spread around the tree neatly. Jason works on the top half whilst I switch the TV on, finding a radio channel.

"Oh! The christmas carol channel," I laugh, turning the volume up as 'we wish you a merry christmas' begins playing.

"So lame," Jason chuckles to himself.

"That's the point," I grin. It another ten minutes, we are done with the baubles. "Okay, the star, lights and snow.

In the black haze of the cold, snowy night, it was almost silent.

Disregarding the sleek black Batmobile racing down the street. Batman pulls into a wide alleyway and climbs out the moment the car stops.

Within seconds he is on the roof of a building, striding across the shadows towards the apartment of Venus Meadow. He has some important questions for her.

Using his grappling gun, he makes his way to her balcony. The outer walls are open and despite being 2:00am in the morning, there is light streaming from the door, christmas music playing and laughing.

Cautiously, he looks into the apartment and finds the last thing he expected.

A decorated tree stood in the centre of Venus' living room. He could hear her laugh and Jason's clearly, as they tossed fake snow at each other from either sides of the tree.

Jason would circle around to try and catch her, but Venus was way too fast. Until she wasn't. Jason caught her from behind, arms wrapping around her waist as he kissed her.

Bruce watches as they pull apart, smiling at each other, Venus craning her neck to see him. Jason touches her cheek sentimentally.

Batman decides to leave them, because he has never heard Venus' real laugh, or seen Jason happier.

I find myself staring into those green eyes of his, sparkling so beautifully.

"I haven't had this much fun in...well, ever," he suddenly says. I barely hear him, because I can't stop thinking about what I want to say.

"Same," I finally smile. "I don't remember ever being this happy before."

I swivel around to face him, moving my hands into his hair and shaking some of the fake snow out of his hair. He laughs and gives it a shake.

Say it. He said it. Say it.

"Thank you for this," I whisper, glancing at the floor. Why is my heart beating so fast? I should be used to being this close to him by now.

"You deserve it. More than anyone," he replies. I smile at him, looking back up.

How is he so utterly perfect in my eyes? How can he be so dangerous and yet be able to do sweet things like this?

Jason is the only one who has ever made me feel this way. Like he's seeing everything in my that no one else has- good things that even I don't notice.

He makes me think that despite everything- despite not being able to have kids, being a sadist and an overall bitch -I can still have a stable, normal relationship.

And before I know it, it happens.

"I love you."
