Thirty Four: Mentor and Successor
An explanation as to what happened with this and the next two chapters: I clicked publish on this one last night. Instead of publishing both, it deleted the work I had done before it saved and kept it as a draft. I had published 35 without realising. I then had to unpublish 35 and then everything went haywire. This is the sixth time Wattpad has done this to me.
Huuuh. I'm sorry.
Love you all,
Stay magical!
Be safe
...notice the 'MJAM' is gone?

There are few comforting sounds to hear. Metal clangs ways away, manic laughter, eerie wind and the jingling of the officer's keys.
Four were around me. The Warden had wanted it that way.
I am on my way to get advice from the one person who understands the problem at ; Harvey Dent, AKA Two Face.
There are several levels to go through, before we come to what looks like a reception room. It's very dark, but much more modern-looking than I had expected.
"DA Meadow; welcome. You're here to see patient ARK15467, I'm told?" Doctor Tompkins asks, walking towards me.
"Yes, just for ten minutes or so," I say. I glance past her head, where a large sign sat on the wall.
ARKHAM ASYLUM;
MALE WARD; VILLAIN BLOCK A
INSANITY LEVEL; 1
PATIENT COUNT; 5
TENDING DOCTORS; TOMPKINS / PATEL
ARK12464 - 'Oswald C. Cobblepot' - The Penguin
ARK13465 - 'John Doe' (unknown) - The Joker
ARK14466 - 'Edward E. Nigma' - The Riddler
ARK15467 - 'Harvey A. Dent' - Two Face
ARK16468 - 'Dr. Jonthan L. Crane, PhD' - The Scarecrow
"Follow me," Tompkins smiles. She leads me towards a gate, which opens by her hand print. I walk behind her.
"If you could?" She asks, nodding to the scanner. I already have my badge in hand, having done this a few times. After that has been scanned I am lead down the corridor, which has doors leading into six different cells.
They don't have all of the patients listed, you see. I know Penguin is reeking havoc on Crime Alley and the Riddler caused problems in Blüdhaven a few night ago, but when the Bat catches them they are brought here.
Then they escape again.
A large and obviously heavy metal door lies at the end of the corridor. A guard opens it, revealing a weaker looking door.
"If you need help-"
"I won't," I interrupt the Doctor, before nodding to the guard. He heaves it and it swings open, a white interrogation room behind it.
At the table sits my once Mentor, Harvey Dent. He looks up at me, not surprised at all.
"Venus," he greets roughly. I step in and the door closes behind me. I am a little on edge (who wouldn't be?) but I smile at him.
"How are you?" I ask, sitting across from him. I end up letting out a laugh at the end of my question. "Stupid thing to open with," I say.
"No, no. It's not. I'm alright," he replies, softer than before.
I see the shell of the man I once knew him to be. Harvey Dent was Gotham's white knight; a prince among the officials. He was inspiring.
Yet now he is intimidating. Half his face- his body, scarred beyond belief by acid. Even now he looks as if he is melting.
His cuffs jingle as he moving his arm to wipe his face were he had no lips to close.
"Before that Bat fucker got me I saw you take down the Santago and Marisetta families. Good job... Should I be worried for my boys?"
I smile, "You could act a little scared for my sake."
"Acting never was my strong suit."
It's nice to see him smile slightly. He had a very good sense of humour, despite how serious his job was.
"You been here long?" I ask softly. No doubt we're being watched.
"Few weeks," he answers.
"I take it you'll be out soon then?" I try not to grin. He shrugs, which is his way of telling me 'yes'.
"My boys told me you got some extra special protection. That Red Hood bastard. Heard he's got a soft spot for you. Won't let anyone touch ya'. That true?"
I'm probably blushing at that. I had no idea...
"It is," I say softly. "We're just at an understanding."
"An understanding where he'd do anything to keep you safe, kid."
I hope no criminals catch on to all these similarities between Red Hood and Jason Todd. Or else we'll have quite the problem.
"Guess you're stuck with something, huh?" He continues, leaning back. I nod. No time for falsities.
"David Blancho."
"Ugh," he throws his head back in disgust. "No class as a criminal."
"Right. We got him, we can convict him, but he's offered us something we're not sure we can refuse."
"Which is?"
I glance at the camera. If this gets out...
"He claims he can unmask twelve different Supervillains. We get that, we can have addresses, personal lives, jobs. The only issue is letting Blancho off with a lighter sentence. He's a murderer and a rapist. He dealt weapons to many. That's where the names may have come from."
Harvey nods slowly, listening to me with his eyes glued to the table.
"Do you know who he can unmask?" Is the first thing he asks.
"No, that's the problem. It could be useless. The Clock King Jr or Kitten. On the other hand it could be bigger. The Joker. Wrecker."
"The only way the deal can go ahead is if you get the list of villains first. Make Blancho's lawyer feel the heat. Who is he anyway?"
"Some bitch boy. Thinks he can cheat to the top by taking on the Office."
"One of those, huh?" He chuckles darkly. I nod, smiling.
"What...What would you do?"
The way he looks at me makes me feel cold. He looks both suspicious and analytical.
"I think, any other time, you'd know exactly what to do. Something else has your attention. Jason Todd, perhaps?"
Oh... He was free during the time the media found out about Jason and I.
"No," I answer firmly, because if there is one thing I am sure about, it's that my relationship has not effected my work. He stares at me for a second, before nodding.
"Okay. Then you tell me honestly what you think is the best choice for this Godforsaken city," He says lowly. I take a deep breath, tapping my nails on the table.
"We shouldn't go for it. I seriously doubt he knows the twelve identities. I also doubt the super villains he can serve to us have the combined crimes to equal his. And, I've built up a good reputation. Letting this guy off with a lighter sentence could not only taint that, but call my position into question. Still... It's all doubt and guessing. I need that list. If I knew who and found them worth it, I might go ahead."
He nods slowly, just as a sharp knock comes at the door. I glance at it, then him.
"I think you'd make the right decision on your own. Uninfluenced. Don't listen to your ADAs. Listen to you. That's the only advice I can give kid," he says.
"It helps. Thank you," I say, standing up slowly.
"Good."
The door opens and two guards enter. I give Harvey a small smile, which he does not return. I know why; he can't been seen showing anything but anger before these guards.
I start down the corridor, just passing the second cell which belongs to Scarecrow when Harvey calls out. I turn around to look at him.
"That boyfriend of yours. He hurts you, you tell me. Got it?" He says carefully. I can't help the small smile that tugs at my lips.
He winks, before he is being shoved in the first cell along.
When I turn back around, I hear a terrifying, loud and shrill laugh. I look to my right, where the third cell along is. That laugh...
I step towards the door and peak through the glass.
"Well you're cuter than the last DA, ain't ya sweet cheeks?" The eerie voice sings. With one sliver of light I see the familiar red smile and greasy green hair.
The Joker.
"How long has he been in?" I ask Tompkins, stepping away.
"Two weeks. Nearly his record," she answers. I nod.
"Be prepared, then."
~
"Nothing."
"Jason."
"Nothing!"
I whine and glare at him from my pillow. I'm already in bed, but he's looking over some file at the desk in my bedroom.
"You said you got me something. I can't just accept a gift from you and have nothing in return!" I say firmly. I hear him sigh as he looks at the ceiling.
He mumbles something I don't understand.
"What?" I say. He looks over his shoulder at me.
"You staying with me is my present," he murmurs a little louder, before looking away. I go blank for a moment, before I find myself smiling.
"Hey," I say softly, sitting up. I stand and walk over to him. He doesn't move as I slide my hands over his chest from behind, leaning down to kiss his cheek. "You're not half as bad as you think you are."
"No, I'm double," he smirks. I laugh, shaking my head.
"C'mon," I say, tugging him slightly. He sighs and closes up whatever he's doing, before standing up.
"I'm being serious!" He complains, jumping ahead of me. I feel myself begin dragged down onto the blankets. I laugh as he pulls me completely on top of him. "I literally leave you before you wake up. I run a mob that deals drugs among other things. Sometimes you don't even hear from me for days... But you're still here," he says, looking up at me with some sort of smile.
"Well, I do live here," I say. He laughs, pulling me down and kissing me. My hands trail up his arms, curling over his shoulders. He runs hot, and it's great.
Ding ding ding!
I pull away from Jason, glancing to the bedside table where my phone sits. Usually I'd ignore it but that alert is from my sister...
Despite Jason's protest I crawl over and grab it.
"What does she want this time of night?" He complains, moving to his side of the bed and laying down. I lay beside him as I opened up the message.
'Huge fight with Dick... I think we're over. have u seen him? his phone is off and no one else has seen him.'
After staring at the text in surprise for a minute, I read it to Jason. We sit in silence for a moment, before I am the first to speak.
"You owe me fifty."
"Yeah yeah. I thought they'd last a little longer to be honest," he says, as I shoot a reply back to my sister. I throw my phone back on the table before practically jumping Jason.
"Probably for the best. They're bad for each other," I say, kissing along his collarbone. I hear him laugh as his hand move around my back, tracing along my spine.
Just as I move back to his lips, I hear a sound from outside the room. I push against Jay's chest and freeze.
"What?" He whispers, frowning.
"I thought I heard-"
"Jasonnnnn...Are you -hiccup- here?...I'm sorry I had to -hiccup- break the elevator!" A manly yet obviously drunk as fuck voice echoes through the apartment.
"Is that...Dick?" I whisper. Jason doesn't say anything.
The door suddenly swings open and sure enough, Richard Grayson is standing there, denim and leather clad with his hair messed up nicely.
"I'm sorry. I forgotted where I lived and Bruce said I had to -hiccup- go to the nearest safe place," he throws his arms up, "And here it is!"
I turn over on my back as he stumbles towards the bed, around to Jason's side.
"Anyway," he yawns, putting the device he must have hacked the elevator with on the table. "Ginger broke up with me. I'm going to go to sleep now, okay?" He lifts the blanket up and slides in next to Jason, who is completely frozen in shock. "Night night."
As soon as his head hits the pillow he is out like a light, snoring softly. Jason is ridged, arms still around me and face holding shock, confusion and discomfort.
I stare up at the over hanging of my bed awkwardly. Did...did that just happen.
Suddenly I can't help it, laughter bursting from my mouth as I sit up, glancing at the two in bed. I climb out, still giggling.
"Spare bedroom?" I offer, holding my hand out. Jason nods, taking it quickly and climbing out. I switch the light off and shut the door, not letting go of his hand.
"That was-...Bloody hell."
I smile, "Well, we're both successors who saw weird sides of our Mentor's today," I admit, opening the spare bedroom door.
