Seventeen: Story Time
"Then ask him to be your boyfriend!"
"But he can't be!"
"Then just keep it casual."
"...But it can't be!"
"Then ask him to be your boyfriend!"
I pinch my nose and sigh heavily. I thought I should make a decision about this whole 'sex with Jason' thing. As in, if he wants it to happen I want more than whatever we have now.
I think... Scratch that. I want it to be nothing... But I don't...
"Ginger I don't know what to do!" I whine. "What do I do?"
"Maybe he wants a relationship," she offers. I am silent for a moment, before I burst out laughing.
"Jason? A relationship? Man-whores aren't into that- that's why they're man-whores," I say, standing up and walking into the kitchen.
"Okay, you know what? I'm the wrong person to talk to about this. Dick!" For a moment I forget Dick is Richard's nickname and thought that she was calling me a dick.
"DA," he greets. His voice is so...yummy.
"Did she tell you?"
"Of course. Who else is she going to tell?"
I laugh. Maybe this one isn't that bad. "True. Too true."
"Anyway. I wanted to tell you something. About Jason."
"Uh, sure. Go ahead?"
"Ask him to be your boyfriend." Suddenly, the door opens and Jason walks in. I give him a small smile, but look back at the kitchen floor. What a juvenile conversation.
"Why would I do that?" I ask nervously.
"The first time I saw you two together, I noticed the way he looked at you. I've known him long enough to see the anger he always has in his eyes. Towards everything. Not you though. When he looks at you it's like it disappears."
"R-Really?" I say, sounding like a school girl. I clear my throat. "I'm sure it's nothing." I was. I see two primary things when he looks at me; lust and hate.
"That night the Brotherhood came for you; he didn't know about your powers, but he was ready to save you and protect you at the drop of a hat, despite the fact that you'd beat him up hours beforehand. He wouldn't do that for anyone else. There's just... there's something there."
"Told you!" My sister shouts.
"Yeah yeah. Well, thank you. I'll see you later."
"Bye."
"Bye! I love you! I miss yo-"
I interrupt my sister by hanging up. "Sorry. Ginger," I smile at Jason, who nods in understanding. I put my phone down and approach slowly. "Feel feminine from buying champagne?"
He smirks, "No, but it is freezing out there." It would be. It's snowing.
I take out a normal glass and Jason hands me the champagne. "Chardonnay. Good one," I grin, opening it up. "Will you at least try it?"
"Lemonade and beer. End of story."
"That's not what it tastes like," I say defiantly. I pour some champagne and hand him the glass. He rolls his eyes and takes a sip. He looks at me, then the glass, before taking a second sip.
"It's all right," he says dismissively. I laugh softly and drink the rest of the glass in a second. "You going to drink that whole bottle?"
"Of course. You know champagne works faster than beer?"
"So you're going to get drunker, faster?" Jason asks, taking his beers to the couch.
"Don't worry. I'll still be smarter than you," I say, sitting on the opposite end of the couch. I want to say something, but opt out by pouring myself more champagne and drinking it.
"Hey. What's your favourite colour?" Jason suddenly asks emotionlessly. What a random question.. He looks like he almost regrets asking it.
"Red or purple I guess. Why?" I say immediately, before he goes crazy.
"Just wondering. I really don't know too much about you," he says, relaxing a little and drinking more beer.
I scoff, "So what? You going to add that to your file on me? Likes colours red and purple?" I joke. He smirks, looking anywhere but at me.
Something must have happened when he went out. Did he talk to someone? Have some life changing thing that made him want to ask me random questions?
"What about music?" He suddenly adds on. Maybe he was replaced by an alien? Not like they don't exist.
"My favourite music?"
"Yeah."
Weird. He's being nice. I honestly feel a bit creeped out.
"Are you feeling alright?" I ask, leaning over and placing my hand on his forehead. He chuckles.
"Yeah. It's just strange that I feel like I know nothing, when I have a file on you. And that we've been together- in this apartment for a while now."
"So, you want to know about me?" I enquire, fighting down a blush. He doesn't want a relationship. He doesn't want a relationship.
"I guess. Yeah."
"From where?"
"The start."
He has an agenda. He must. But something in me makes me want to tell him every little detail. I drink a little more and nod slowly.
"Okay. But you have to tell me as well," I bargain. I'd like to know what he's really been through. He squints for a moment and I worry he'll disagree.
"Fine."
What?
"R-Really?"
"Seems fair."
It does. But not logical, especially on his part. On mine too I suppose. It's like a almost forget who he really is when he smiles.
"Alright then," I agree, sitting up. I drink a bit more, before placing my glass down.
"I was born somewhere, not Lightway, and dropped off at my dad's house. It's what happened to all my siblings. Same mother though. I've never met my mom, nor has or had any of my siblings. She's a mystery that my dad won't talk about. Dad already had two sons and Gin. My oldest brother's name is Simon, seven years older than me. Then there was Caeden five years. Then Gin. Then me. Two years later, my brother Drew. Four years after him, my sister Menolly. Growing up it was usually just Ginger, Nolly and Drew being moved to different Safe Houses. We had three nannies. Occasionally Caeden would be with us. Never Sim, though. He'd visit, but he was considered the next boss so he was usually with Dad. My Dad made an effort to be a normal father. He did good, for a time. We went to a private school controlled by the mob." I stop, wondering where to go next.
"Let me guess; you were treated like royalty at school."
"Uhuh," I nod. "Granted I wasn't around much. I'd sneak off to watch my brothers train. Eventually my dad found out. Thought I was about to get my ass kicked; a nine year old girl who belonged to the biggest gang family in the city was supposed to know how to do other things. Instead of berating me, my father brought my out onto the training mat and put a gun in my hand. When I hit every bullseye, he began training me like them. Eventually Gin joined. When I was ten, Sim turned against my father. He now runs a gang out of Opal City. Next three years were just training, I suppose. When I was 13, Caeden was killed. That's when my Persona as Sugar Skull began. My first kill was that lieutenant that shot him. Five years of torturing pedophiles and rapists, murdering serial killers... When I was eighteen, my younger brother Drew died on his sixteenth birthday. Car bomb meant for my dad. He never forgave himself. It was down to three girls. That's when I decided I couldn't do the gang scene anymore, so I went into studying law. Of course I had to make a deal with my father. So we agreed; I could leave and study law, but I had to marry this greasy Italian Mob son ten years older than me. It was arranged for Menolly to marry Hiroshi when she came of age. I knew who I wanted, so when I offered to spar with Hiroshi when he and his family were staying with us...well, the happy ending to that night lead to convincing my father of my own plan. Hiroshi was in love with me, but I felt very vaguely the same way. He peppered with gifts; my cat, Lucifer; my Lambo. A short time into my studying and close to our wedding. He died."
I stop to breathe. Jason is looking down, obviously unsure of how he should look.
"We probably wouldn't have married anyway," I admit, drinking a bit.
"What do you mean?"
Now that I think about it...why hadn't Jason asked about it before. "Actually now that I think about it; were you never worried about..." I trail off. How can I say this without being blunt? "Well, about me getting ya know...p-pregnant?" I imply awkwardly, without looking him in the eye. "You don't exactly pull out," I choke out, drinking an entire glass in one go.
Jason stays silent, staring at the floor with a taken-back expression. "What are those pills you take every morning?"
"Iron replacement. Being a vegan I miss out on a lot of nutrients from meat and stuff. What did you think they were. Control?"
When he looks up at me with a terrified look on his face. "What? Why didn't you tell me! Oh my God I couldn't have gotten you pregnant fifty times now!" He goes on rambling.
"Jason-"
"Oh my God I didn't even think!"
"Jason-"
"How stupid could I-"
"Jason!" I reach out and grab his arm. "I can't have kids, okay!?" I shout, before taking a deep breath and calming, speaking softly. That's why the marriage would have been stopped. I couldn't give the Yakuza or the Savore an air. Ginger would have been asked to marry him instead. I moved here after he died and worked my way into the DA's office."
At the end of my speech, I take a deep breath and sit back with my drink.
"I'm sorry," seems the only thing he can get out, staring at me.
"I'm over it. At least- I hope. I mean I dreamed of being a better mother than my own was. I like babies. So cute. But it's...okay," I sigh. "Anyway. Haven't seen Sim since he left. Talk to Menolly sometimes. She's sixteen now."
"Have you uh...ever been curious about your mom?" He asks. I nod slowly.
"Everyday," I say softly. It's true. After a deep breath, I place my glass back down and turn to him. "Your turn," I encourage.
