Forty Six: Jason's First Valentine
(whispers: Arkham Knight fanfic maybe) *coughs* ahem, anyway...
~
Things were back to normal within two weeks. At a month after the kidnapping, it felt how it did before that.
Apart from the fact that I am still at Wayne Manor.
However I find that I don't mind. The house is so large that it's almost like having my own place again. Quiet and calm. Secluded.
Alfred rarely lets me cook. I both miss cooking and find it extremely relaxing to not have to. At least I still get to drive myself around though.
I have met many heroes in charge of guarding me at work, so I can keep justice in this godforsaken city balanced and working.
Sometimes I have Black Bat (Cass) and Steph. Other times I might have Bluejay, Guardian, Tigress and quite interestingly- Kid Flash.
He's an alright guy.
Soon they'll be rotating, going back to their own cities. So far in the past month I have been attacked three time and whoever is on guard has foiled the efforts.
Tim has asked some of the Titans to help instead, which they are. In a few days Superboy, Wondergirl, Beast Boy and Impulse will be visiting for a while.
The entire Bat family- my family, Damian and Dick like to correct, have been working tirelessly to find any trace of Sukiyo.
Dad has pulled in some favours as well, most of the mob looking for her as well. And I myself spend most of my waking moments searching.
Sometimes, I'll be wandering around the manor or playing with Levi and Kira, when Stephanie, Cass, Damian and occasionally Bluejay will...follow me.
I'll walk into one room and within the minute they will too, trying to act like they have their own reasons for being in their. The others find it amusing.
Caelan has been made to stay here a little longer, due to the threat of Sukiyo coming for any of my family. Bruce argued that she was safe here.
My father, star struck that he was talking to the Batman, agreed almost immediately.
Believe me when I say, Caelan does not mind. At all. On any level. Due to certain Tim Drakes.
The thing I miss most about home is my wine and my garden. Bruce has a cellar and his fine is great, but I miss the ones I picked myself.
And my poor garden. I worked so hard to get it back into shape after it had been neglected during my time with Jason. That work seems to be for nothing.
Lastly, I miss my friends. Sure, I have everyone here and Kalie and Telysha. But my friends not central to my job, like Taylor or Grace or Nicky, are the ones I miss.
"Ready to go?"
I glance over my shoulder, smiling at Jason. He's dressed in smart casual, leaning against the door.
Bruce is already gone with Selina, Dick is going out to get drunk alone, Tim and Caelan, I'd rather not know, Steph and Cass volunteered for patrol with Damian.
It's Valentines day.
That faithful day where people are either happy with their Valentine or sad with their lonesome.
For me Valentines day meant staying home from school as to not be bombarded, being pampered by Hiroshi or wine with my garden.
And now it's a day spent with Jason.
It's 11am when we get into the car. We had a late morning due to certain...celebratory rituals.
"Is this your first valentines?" I ask, as he begins driving in the direction I tell him to. I handle lunch and he organises dinner. It's a fair deal.
My plan is to take him to the park where we usually take the dogs. It's secluded and quiet. We only found it by chance, really.
"So, picnic?" He says, glancing back where the basket was. I nod.
"Super cliché and probably a little weak. I'll lift my game next year though, I promise," I grin. Jason looks away from the road to me.
I sigh, closing my eyes upon realising what I had just implied.
That we'll still be together next year.
"I'm such a dick," I mumble to myself. He laughs which only makes me feel worse. I feel him grab my hand, pulling it towards him and kissing my palm.
"A picnic sounds great," he says. I feel like whacking him.
We pull up to the park, which is empty. As it's little known I'm not surprised. I get out of car, slipping my sunglasses on as Jason grabs the basket.
I grab my present to him as well.
"This isn't cliché you know," he says, slipping his hand around my waist and kissing my head.
"Simple, then. I went with simple because everything else seems complicated right now," I comply. He grins.
"Got that right."
We set out our picnic blanket under the large tree. Thanks to Alfred and watching carefully, I know Jason's favourite ice cream and food.
AKA Neapolitan and chilli dogs.
We take a seat, next to each other, facing the lake. I place the basket and the present in front of us.
"You get to open that after," I say jokingly, nudging it.
"What have I told you about presents?" He scolds lightly. I can only grin. He thinks he doesn't deserve them.
He deserves more, honestly.
"As I suck at cooking non-vegan Alfred helped me. He also helped me make vegan version of the non-vegan food," I say, almost nervously.
Is this too boring? Too plain? ...Oh God, it is, isn't it? Did I even put any thought into it at all? If this is his first valentine I don't want him to think it's always going to be boring and-
"Come out of your head," he says dismissively, pulling the basket over.
"I can't. I'm panicking," I reply, laying back. I hear him open the basket. "I feel like I didn't really plan anything."
"Hey, this is more than we've been able to do for weeks with you working so much and me...me-ing."
"You-ing?" I grin, as he looks over his shoulder, before laying down beside me, holding my hand. We both know he can't just say Red Hood out loud.
"Do what you normally do when you're freaking out," he says, reaching for my other hand. At the same time he pulls the chain on my necklace so that the pendant moves up to my neck.
He places my hand around it.
It takes a few moments to register what he just implied, before I whack his arm.
"Do you have a camera in my office?" I ask, remembering that the pendant also has a tracker in it. He looks at me without expression, for a moment, before glancing away.
"Maybe."
He looks worried, but I ease that by laughing. Because it's so ridiculous that I didn't guess that already, and that it's actually happened.
He really doesn't get relationships.
We eat in a nice silence, when I begin to realise that he's right.
Things have been tough at work; tougher than usual. I've been adding a few ADAs to the roster to lighten the work, but there has been an influx. I expect a ton tomorrow, being Valentines day.
Jason works tirelessly to trace any sign of Yokisu or the Joker, as well as 'protecting' the city.
Bruce quietly and briefly pointed out to me last week that the number of deaths at Jason's hands have reduced for some reason.
I can guess one.
"The Warriors of Red, huh?" He suddenly says, catching my attention. I look at him and nod, grinning brightly.
"Some of the best fighters in the world come out of their training," I reply, sipping my water having finished lunch. I noticed Jason looks a little off.
"What's wrong?" I ask lightly. He places half of his last (third?) chilli dog down, glancing at the lake, then at me.
"You never mentioned it," he states, making me think back to when we told each other our own stories, in that stupid safe house of his.
"There were a lot of things I didn't mention. They just...they're not important. Now, anyway," I say awkwardly. The last thing I want to do is fight with him on this day.
He frowns a little bit, before laying back on the blanket. I'm about ready to question him, before he slips one arm around my waist, pulling gently.
I allow myself to lay back with him, resting my head in the crook of his neck.
"I left out things, I suppose," he admits, chest rumbling beneath my hands.
"Want to trade?" I ask lightly.
For a few moments we're both silent, him tracing circles on my back. It's like a silent agreement that neither of us are going to be angry about the unspoken words of out past.
He starts off.
"I did almost date another girl. Rose Wilson. But I didn't feel anything for her," he admits quietly. I decide to play it like we would a game of 'tell me something'. So, I don't retaliate.
I will save the Rose pruning for later.
"After Hiroshi died, when I turned 19, my father allowed me to go to the Nullabor Plain in Australia, where the establishment of the Warriors of the Red Dust is. They're an organisation that accepts and trains only those that pass a series of tests to prove they are of Warrior status. Training can range from a few months to decades. My training took two years. Vigorous, scarring, painful and some of the best times of my life. It was there I earned a reputation for having a proclivity to physical and mental torture. A Sadist."
I enjoyed my training. If anything, I miss it. My old trainers would be disappointed and consider me to have let myself go now.
Jason obviously struggles not to reply.
"I tried to kill Bruce when I came back," he says softly, almost in a whisper. I find myself frowning, a reply on my tongue. I hold it in.
But I do feel a little sick at the knowledge.
"I got the name Sugar Skull because my first big break as a vigilante came during a Day of the Dead festival. The person I attacked and tortured, a trafficker, believed my to be La Muerte in spirit, punishing him for his deeds. Rumours spread, it turned into Sugar Skull. It worked, so I went with it."
I look up at him, to see him smiling slightly.
"I can't think of anything else," he says.
"Neither can I," I grin.
I lie.
~
Jason's part of the evening is reservations at a restaurant in the city called Laccom. Fancy and French, but partially vegan. I like it.
He also promises we're going somewhere after.
I have to convince him to leave his present from me in the car. I had two XL handguns made, the Russian (best) way with some of the toughest metal in the world. They quick fire, have an easy lock and can only be used by him.
We get out of the car, immediately holding hands as we cross over to the restaurant.
At the same time we both spot three photographers at the door, accompanied by reporters and writers. The moment we're in view everything turns towards us.
"DA Meadow! Any news on David Blancho's case."
"DA Meadow are the two of you getting engaged any time soon?"
Jason opens the door for me and we get inside, before any more questions can be fired at us. We're seated at our table and order our meals.
"So where are we going after?" I ask lightly, watching him from across the table. He looks gorgeous- perfectly handsome in a black suit, emerald eyes sparkling.
"It's a surprise," he smirks back at me. I grin, rolling my eyes.
"You win Valentines day."
"Is that possible?"
"I know! You're first time and you win!" I say in fake exasperation. It's wonderful to hear him laugh at that. "Then again I never could win Valentines day," I add on to the end.
Our first course is brought out as he frowns in confusion at my words.
"Hiroshi," I clarify, prompting a nod.
"Well like I said. Our afternoon was a great one. Our favourite place, our favourite food and our favourite people," he chuckles, lifting his glass.
I laugh and lift mine, clinking it against his.
"To Venjay," I joke, using the name Dick so excitedly calls us. He rolls his eyes, but his smile stays.
"To Venjay."
Two courses later, that section of our day is done. Jason grabs my jacket as we head back out into the night, over to the Lancer.
Couples litter the streets, holding hands, taking selfies and kissing. I silently wonder to myself who wins the day out of each pairing.
I climb into the car, pulling my seatbelt on as Jason shuts my door. When he gets into the driver's seat, he holds out a black strip of material.
"I need to put this on you," he says, an evil glint behind his eye.
"This isn't going where I think it is, is it?" I say wearily. He throws his head back and laughs, before I sigh and shuffle around, my back to him.
He places the blindfold over my eyes gently.
"Is it too tight?" He asks, sounding concerned.
"No," I sing.
"Now?" He asks, tying it.
"No."
"Now."
"Ouch, yes!"
"Geez s-"
"Kidding."
"Ven!"
I laugh as I settle back into my seat, hearing the car turn on. As Jason pulls out he starts speaking again.
"Remember when we were talking about stupid things we want to do one day. I said I'd like to fight Superman, you said you'd like to drive the Batmobile..."
"I remember," I say slowly, intrigued. I give up mapping the turns he takes in my head, in favour of listening to his voice.
"That conversation lead to my idea. There's just some things we need to go over."
It gets a little serious. I might be worried if I didn't have a buzz going on.
"First off, if you're keeping track of where we're going I need you to stop, Bruce's orders," he begins, sounding nervous.
I smile, "I'm not," I say gently, for his sake.
"Okay. Next, I need you to listen carefully to every word. Is that alright?"
"Of course," I reply, getting a little worried. We're not doing anything illegal, right?
The car comes to a stop. Despite the blindfold I can tell we're somewhere dark. Jason gets out of the car, disappearing for a few seconds before opening up my door.
He takes my hand, mumbling to me to step out carefully.
There is no one else on this planet I would trust, wearing a blindfold. Not my sister, not Dick, not even my father.
But him...
Judging by the smell and the sound of my heels as we walk slowly, I believed we're in an alleyway. I can here water dripping softly somewhere in the distance as well.
"Okay, this part might freak you out a bit...Do you trust me?" He says, leading me somewhere than feels like inside. A large box perhaps.
"I trust you," I reply, finding a smile. I feel his hand trace along my face, before he's kissing me. I respond, as his hands move to cover my ears.
They don't block sounds, but they muffle noise. I know he speaks and I know something replies. Light flares up before the blindfold and I feel the oddest sensation of my life. A gentle tingling across my skin, up through my spin and into my stomach.
I feel the atmosphere around us change and something tells me I have just teleported for the first time in my life.
"I've got you," he says, maneuvering around my, hands slipping into mind again. "There's a step." I'm careful were I place my foot next, but it must be the right place, because Jason pulls me gently.
Wherever we are is pretty cold. There also seems to be a distant wind I cannot distinguish. With one arm around my waist, a hand in mine, Jason leads me across this strange room.
I feel like I'm walking on metal.
"Alright. You said this was a dream of yours and I hope I've been able to make it come true," he says in my ear, close. I find myself smiling, from excitement and in adoration.
"Three, two...one."
The blindfold disappears and my eyes snap open immediately.
And I am met with a breathtaking sight I have only dreamed of.
Before my is planet Earth. Large and beautiful and round, 7 billion people beneath us.
We're in space. I'm in space.
"Oh my God," I manage to whisper, taking a step closer. I glance around at whatever it is we're in, but Jason's chest blocks most of it from view.
He's pressed against my back, arms winding around my waist.
"This is the Watchtower of the Justice League," he answers my silent question. "I'm sorry I can't let you see it...but I know going up into space and looking down at Earth is a dream of yours. Now you're living it."
He rests a chin against my shoulder, but I'm too awe-struck to complain.
"Look at the stars," I whisper, amazed at the sheer number that is so invisible from Earth. "And the...the planet. It's beautiful. This is all...amazing."
My mouth is agape as I try to take in every little detail of what I'm seeing. No gift, from anyone, not price, is worth this.
"Jason this is-" I can't even get the words out, still stunned by the magnificence before me. I feel like a baby turtle finally reach the water, or a cat with a ball.
Fascinated by something I've always wanted.
"I'd do anything for you," he says softly, against my hair. I squeeze his hands, my gaze not leaving the sight behind the glass.
"This is the most amazing thing anyone has ever given me," I say, feeling like there is tears behind my eyes.
But there are none to fall. This moment is too beautiful to besmirch with crying. I allow myself to fall back into my love, as he holds me tightly.
My love.
We must be up there for at least an hour. It feels shorter than that, but all I do is stare and marvel at this once-in-a-lifetime view.
Jason's arms finally slide from their hold, knocking me gently from my trance. My eyes don't leave the glass as I turn away slightly, understanding that it's time to go.
"Come on, beautiful," he mumbles, staring at my expression of fascination. Burning the image into my brain, I finally turn away, allowing him to take the blindfold out again.
Not before I lean up, taking his face in my hands and kissing him hard in the glow of our planet. He responds, pulling me against him lovingly.
As we separate, not even an inch, I find those sparkling eyes boring into mine.
I grin, "I love you," I say, so quietly I barely hear it myself.
He kisses me again. Once, softly. He keeps intact as he replies.
"I love you too."
And it's in that moment I realise that Valentines Day isn't about being the better lover in the relationship.
It's about expressing the love in that relationship.
And I feel like there's enough love in this one to last a lifetime.
