Chapter 2: What's your feelings on this?

A hundred million... this is gonna be great... all I have to do is test this thing out for a few days and I'll get paid. The government must be really generous to be handing five hundred million out.

Those were the words in Axle's head. He was lost in his own thoughts of the pay, the risks and the project itself and this had everyone at the dinner table staring at him. Usually he was silent, but something seemed off about him right now... very off.

"Axle?" Carly tried to call him back to the real world but he was still lost in his multiple thoughts. "Axle!" She called even louder this time and she still didn't receive a single response from him. "Axle!!" Erin yelled out this time. Axle snapped himself back to reality and looked at the sixteen year old girl. She gave him an odd look and he turned his head only to see that everyone else was sharing the same look as Erin.

"What?" He asked since the odd looks he received left him very confused. "Dude, you've been out of it for at least five minutes." Eddie stated the thoughts that everyone at the table had. Axle looked at the fourteen year old with even more confusion than when he was snapped out of his thoughts.

"Is there something wrong Axle? You haven't touched your food at all." Juliette asked her adopted son as she was very concerned about him. For those who didn't know or may have forgotten, Juliette is the name of Wyatt's wife.

"Yeah kid... you're scaring us." Wyatt was the last to add to the bowl of worries and concerns. Axle knew however, that Carly hasn't commented at all about his long silence. Only reason why everyone grew concerned was because Axle wasn't eating at all. Axle had to prepare himself for later because he knew that Carly knew that something was going on since it had occupied his mind for one of the longest times yet.

"Oh, I was thinking about my job... I'm doing all the real stuff tomorrow." He said reassuring them all, except Carly of course. But the question remained... What was he going to do? That was the one question that was on all of their minds.

"What exactly are you doing?" Juliette asked him before closed his eyes. "Can't say... It's classified information... government stuff." Axle told his adoptive mother which made Carly and Wyatt do the mother of all spit takes. "Government Axle?" Wyatt asked in surprise. His eyes were as wide as the dinner plates at the table. "That's the LAST thing I expected to hear... COMING from YOU." Carly said clearly putting emphasis on the three words. Who could blame her? Same would go for Wyatt. They were all well aware of how the government screwed up their lives.

"Yeah Axle, from what happened four years ago are you sure you wanna do this?" Axle could hear the doubt and worry coming from Wyatt's voice. Axle in truth couldn't blame his adoptive father since he was still having trouble believing that he was going to be a guinea pig in a government project.

"It's okay, besides... your sister is in charge so I'm in good hands." Axle said trying to reassure his adoptive father which didn't help at all concerning his situation.

"Wait... hold up... you never told me a thing about Rebecca working with you." Wyatt said as he now felt upset at the sudden revelation of this information. "I'm actually working for her, much less with her."

"You're working for Aunt Rebecca?" Erin and Eddie asked in unison. The two siblings then looked at each other and glared at each other for saying the same thing at the same time.

"Yeah." Axle said before he went back to eating... more like before he started eating. "That's the end of it... can I please eat now?"

"You might be done with them but the two of us are far from done. We are talking about this later tonight." Carly whispered into Axle's ear. Those words surely sent chills down his spine.

He knew there was no escaping the CyberHuman that he grew extremely close to. She could read him like a book so she had him trapped and she knew he wouldn't be able to escape her.

After dinner everyone did their respective things. Eddie went to go play some video games in his room, Erin went on talking to her friends all night long, Wyatt and Juliette went to wash the dishes and Axle Carly... those two went off to Axle's room on the count that it was sound proof. The obvious reason was because of Axle's new job. After the Grey incident Axle and Carly swore never to work directly for the government and Axle was now breaking that vow.

"So what's the deal Axle?" She asked knowing that he couldn't keep the truth from her. It was always their thing. If Axle was hiding something from Carly she'd immediately know what he was doing and she'd make him tell her the truth. A perk of knowing someone like an open book. Axle looked at her and sighed once more.

"Okay, you can't let anyone know." He started while she nodded. She was highly interested in Axle now and she needed to know if he and/or she was in danger with what he was doing. "I'm a beta tester for a new project that the government is funding. It's a way to put human minds inside a program called CyberSpace."

"CyberSpace?" Carly asked. "Yeah, it's supposed to revolutionise communication, and also replace the internet so that there wouldn't be any viruses because the user's mind can combat that completely." He said as he explained it to his CyberHuman friend. "Isn't that risky?" She asked not trusting him to do this and not only that but she was worried for what might happen to him.

"That's what the beta testers are for." Axle said with the smirk that the CyberHuman missed seeing. Seeing that gave her hope that the old happy-ish Axle was still in there somewhere which made her mission to rescue him from his own darkness easier now. "We test it and help the developers make the perfect product by finding any and all defects."

"Fine, but this still makes me feel weird." She said with worry in her voice. "Really? The CyberHuman is weirded out by CyberSpace." Axle teased her and she pouted as a response. "Knock it off Axle." She said pushing him onto his bed. He just chuckled and that made her smile.

"Come back alive you idiot." She said with that small smile that he was unable to see. "I will, just wait for me okay." Axle said to which Carly nodded before leaving his room. "After all... I'm doing this for you."
