Chapter 30: Kyber

"It's over." Axle said as he stood up. He turned around and looked at Carly. She walked up to him and slapped him across his cheek. "Ow! What was that for?!" He asked while rubbing his now red cheek.

"You suicidal asshole!! Do you know how close you were to breaking your promise?" She asked as she cried.

"I'm giving up Carly." He said in a weaker voice than Carly. "I won't allow it you idiot. While I do agree with you on humans being a write off of a species, some show that they're better." Carly said sinking her head into his chest.

"You're a prime example Axle. You're a good person... You can't let anyone put you down because of it, you're flawed like all humans but those flaws make you perfect." She hugged him.

"Axle, can I ask you a question?"

"Yeah."

"Would you live for me?"

"Yes, I would."

"Sorry for being selfish but can I make this request?"

"What is it?"

"Can you live for me?" She caught him off guard. "I didn't like what I saw just now. I don't want you die."

"Why do you care whether I live or die?"

"Because I don't want to lose you you idiot." Those words made Axle's eyes shoot wide open. He looked at Carly who was looking at him with tears in her eyes.

On instinct, Axle pulled Carly in closer and stroked his fingers through her hair. "I'll live." He said quietly, but it was loud enough so that Carly could hear it. A small smile appeared on her face which made him smile.

"If I recall, I didn't make a promise... but I did live." Axle said before he pulled the CyberHuman in for a hug. "I'm sorry." Axle said while a tear escaped his eye.

"Why are you sorry?" Carly asked. "I broke my promise to you." He said, doing his best to hold back the tears.

"Aaaahhhh!!!" Carly yelled as she shot up sitting up right. She was panting heavily. She looked at her hands and around her body.

"Carly?" Axle spoke up showing that he was now awake. "Are you okay?"
She looked at him with tearful eyes. Axle felt bad for her but he also realised that even though she was in tears, her eyes glistened as she looked at him.

He pulled her in and wrapped his arms around her. "What's wrong Carly?" She just whimpered as she buried her face into his chest.

"I had a nightmare." Axle took a deep breath and ran his fingers through her hair. "What happened?" Axle asked her with in a calm welcoming voice.

"There were a lot of people. They used these tools to... hurt me. They enjoyed it when I was hurt. I saw their faces, they loved it. Those twisted sadistic grins... I can still remember them."

She couldn't hold anything back. She cried, soaking Axle's t-shirt in the process. He felt sad for her. "Did that happen to you... I mean, was it a memory?"

She said nothing. All she did was nod yes.

"Carly... I promise you..." Axle said, "I promise that I won't let anyone hurt you anymore. I promise to stay with you and protect you for as long as I live."

"Thank you Axle. I promise to do the same." Carly said as she wiped her tears away.

"It's okay Axle. But I'm the one who's sorry... I could've save Laura and Melanie."

"Now then, if you're human, this will be a tough choice... which Ryder are you going to save? Laura..." one guard pointed a gun to her head, "or Melanie?" The other guard pointed a gun to Melanie's head.

"Carly, save my mom, kill me!!" Laura cried. "No, I've lived my life... kill me!!" Melanie told Carly.

"Time's running out." He laughed. "Save Laura, save Laura!!" Melanie cried out. "Make your choice, if you can!!"

Carly didn't like this. She didn't want to choose. Even if she saved one, she was practically killing the other. "Time's up!!" He yelled while motioning for the guards to kill them.

They fired, killing both Laura and Melanie. Carly simply watched. She wanted both of them to live, but she couldn't make the choice to save one. Guilt filled her conscience. She looked at Axle now realising that he was now an orphan. He had nobody left. It was her fault. Laura and Melanie... they were both killed. She was responsible.

"A human can choose... I didn't... am I human?" Carly asked herself quietly. "I can't be... I didn't choose, and now they're both dead. I didn't choose and Axle is an orphan now. I'm not a human."

She cried. She was broken. "I'm not human... just a stupid robot, nothing more." Whatever strength she had to help her through this died. Carly was no more... All that remained was a lifeless shell.

"Now then, what's your name?"

"I am CyberHuman Eight Thirty One, special project to assist the military. What are your orders?"

"Damage is done... there's nothing we can do about that Carly." He stroked her cheek. "But at least we found a way back to each other."

"Let go of the prisoner soldier... I've been ordered to take him to the professor's lab." A female voice said from the back. The two looked behind to see Carly, better known there as Eight Thirty One.

"Okay. He's all yours." Wyatt said as Axle walked slowly toward Carly.

"Walk prisoner." She said as they moved before the guard was out of sight. Carly looked around and broke the handcuffs that he was now wearing.

"What's happening?" Axle asked in a depressed tone while still refusing to look at the android. She slammed him against the wall and forced him to look at her.

When he looked her in the eyes, he could tell that something was different. His eyes, observing her facial expression. It was blank, which served as a perfect opportunity to take him by surprise.

She did the last thing he expected her to do, especially in this state. She kissed him, and it was a passionate one in fact.

It lasted for about five seconds before she moved her face away from his. "I saw the interrogation, I did not agree to be your girlfriend." She said.

"I thought it wasn't... Wait, you remember who you are?" Axle said surprised.

"I remember everything Axle... I'm sorry."

"Don't be."

"Thank you for everything Axle." Carly said as she looked into his chocolate orbs. He longingly looked into her silver orbs. "No kiss from me mister hero." She said making him pout. "Don't pout you dummie." She said as she smiled.

We really came a long way... I'm glad I found her in the back yard.

Axle was busy channel flipping until he heard a thud in the back yard. He was home alone for the moment and decided to walk out to see what or who caused that thud.

He opened the door and looked outside while squinting. Damn the sun is bright. He thought. He spent his time avoiding sunlight and this was something he loathed.

When his eyes adjusted to the light, he looked around. It was bright but he was able to see everything in the back yard. The grill, the pool, the bench and a girl?

Axle's eyes widened as he saw her. She was about five feet tall, with long black hair. She didn't look like she was much older than him, in fact, she looked to be about the same age as Axle. She had a nice build and a beautiful face. She was unconscious and she only wore a blue tank top and white shorts.

On instinct, Axle rushed over and picked her up. He was left with one question. Who is this girl and what is she doing here. She felt cold for some reason. He took her back inside as the clouds started to get darker. He walked with the girl in his arms and headed to his room.

.....................
He looked at her with a smile and said, "Here, you need to eat." she was hesitant. She reluctantly accepted the plate full of food. She ate half of what was on the plate before giving it back to Axle.

"You need to eat too." she said quietly. "You spoke." he smiled. "Where do you live?" he asked.

"Take the food." she said. "I'm not hungry, I brought that here for you." He said giving it back to her. "Why are you so nice with me?" she asked, refusing to look at him.

"Is there ever a reason why I shouldn't be?"

"I don't know..."

"Hey, I'm Axle. What's your name?" he asked her.

"I don't have one."

"Do you have a home?"

"Nuh uh."

"Well how about we call you Carly for the time being." Laura said drawing their attention to her.

"Carly..." the girl said. "I like it." she said while letting a small smile creep up on her face.

"We haven't given you a last name..." He said. "Yeah, Laura gave me the name Carly... I'll always treasure it." Carly said.

"Well here's your last name... Kyber."

"What?" She was confused. "Carly Kyber... that's your name.

"Carla Evans... Eight Thirty One... now Carly Kyber." She said. "Thanks for that Axle."

"You're welcome for that Carly." He said. "Come on, let's get out of here." He said before the two walked off. They did stop when a look of dread appeared on Axle's face. "What's wrong Axle."

"Oh, it's nothing, just the weird feeling of watching yourself die." Axle said as he referred to CyberHuman Eight Thirty Two. Carly just shook her head before she motioned for him to keep moving with her.
