Chapter 25

You pushed open the door to Jungkook's room, your breath catching in your throat. You gasped when you saw him lying so still, his once glowy skin was now pale and sweaty. Tubes and wires snaked across his body, connected to the beeping machines that kept him alive. The room smelled strongly of antiseptic, making everything feel cold and clinical.

It's all my fault.

Your legs felt like lead as you walked to his bed, the cool touch of his skin making you shudder when you took his hand. "I'm so sorry, Jungkook," you whispered, your voice trembling.

A tear slipped down your cheek, as you pressed his hand to your lips. "Please forgive me." The guilt was crushing you.

I have to stay strong. He needs me to be strong right now.

With a shaky breath, you looked at Jungkook one more time before leaving the room.

You found Hoseok in the kitchen, rummaging through a cluttered drawer, his face lighting up with a warm smile when he saw you. "Hey, y/n!"

"Hey, I need help contacting my people," you asked.

"Of course! Let me get it sorted for you. Hang tight," Hoseok replied, his eyes crinkling with his smile.

A few minutes later, you stared at the screen, your fingers gripping the edge of the desk as you waited for the connection. The tension in your shoulders eased a fraction when you saw the familiar faces of your team. Yoongi appeared first, his relief hidden behind his usual sarcasm.

"Y/n! Thank goodness. I almost put out a missing persons report. You okay?"

You managed a small smile. "Yeah, aside from a little concussion, I'm fine. Jungkook and his friend Hoseok got me out."

Yoongi's expression softened, though his smirk remained. "Good. And Taehyung is safe too, in case you were worried. Which I know you were."

"Thank you," you replied, your voice thick with relief. "That's a huge weight off my shoulders."

Namjoon's face appeared next, his eyes narrowed with concern. "Y/n, where are you?"

"I'm not sure, to be honest," you admitted, glancing around the plain room.

"You need to figure it out and tell us right away! We'll come get you. You can't trust them. Jungkook betrayed us!" Namjoon's frustration was clear, his brows knitted in anger.

Your heart pounded. "I don't believe that. He took a knife to protect me. I think OmniCorp used RM tech on me, because the person who interrogated me looked like Jungkook."

"That's because it was him!" Namjoon's voice rose, each word feeling like a stab straight to your heart.

"No, it wasn't. OmniCorp did that to manipulate me," you said firmly.

"Even if Jungkook wasn't the one interrogating you, he still tied us up and left with his buddy Jimin," Namjoon pressed.

Your patience was wearing thin. "I don't have all the answers right now. Just lay low and we'll talk in a few hours."

With a heavy heart, you ended the call and headed back to Jungkook's room. The door swung open, revealing Jungkook awake in bed.

Despite the pain on his face, a small smile touched his lips. "Hey, it's not as bad as it looks."

Your breath hitched, your heart aching at the sight. You hesitated, a lump in your throat. He reached out his hand. "Come here. How's your head?"

You rushed to his side, clutching his hand desperately. "I'm so sorry!" Your voice cracked as you felt fresh tears spill onto his hand. Jungkook's trembling fingers reached up to wipe them away, a tender smile on his handsome face.

"It's okay. You're safe now," he whispered, his voice barely audible but filled of warmth.

You rested your head on his shoulder, feeling him gently comb through your hair. "Did your brother make it out? I told him to stay in the van until he was driven out."

You looked up in surprise. "You saw Taehyung?"

He nodded.

"What happened after Jimin showed up?" You asked.

Jungkook sighed. "I knew he wouldn't understand and I was afraid he'd call reinforcements, so I pretended to be on his side. I tied up Namjoon and Jin, but not too tightly so they could escape, and led Jimin away to buy them time."

Your brow furrowed in confusion. "But what about the communication device you kept checking?"

"I used it to talk to Hoseok and let him know I was okay. I wanted to have a backup plan in case things went sideways. I didn't like sending you in like that, so I wanted to make sure you had extra support."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Jungkook managed a weak chuckle before grimacing in pain. "You know Namjoon. He already didn't trust me. I didn't want to give him more reasons to doubt me."

"So you sent Hoseok to check on me?" You asked, trying to process everything.

"Yes. When we lost contact, I was worried about you. I wasn't sure Jin would have enough time to meet up with you, so I messaged Hoseok. I also asked him to prepare a hovercraft."

You winced, guilt washing over you again. "You should've told me. I knocked him out... poor Hoseok."

"I know. I'm sorry. No more secret plans," Jungkook said softly, touching your cheek.

I hate myself for doubting him.

You hid your face in his shoulder again.

Just then, Hoseok entered the room, a bright smile on his face. "I hear you're talking about moi," he said, coming closer to examine Jungkook's wound. "I was going to explain everything to you, y/n, but it looks like you got ahead of me."

Your cheeks flushed with embarrassment. "I'm really sorry about that."

Hoseok shrugged off your apology. "It's fine. But did you tell him about the two Jungkooks?"

Jungkook blinked in confusion. "Two of me?"

"Yeah, because of the simulation tech, I saw you fighting yourself," you explained.

Jungkook's expression cleared as he winced while Hoseok changed the bandages. "Now what you said in the hovercraft makes sense. It was Kane. He tried to take you away..."

"Is he the one who stabbed you?" Your anger flared, your eyes darkening.

Jungkook nodded, his face twisting in pain.

"That son of a bitch! He'll pay for that. He'll pay for everything," you spat, furious.

Hoseok's tone grew serious. "Jungkook needs more rest. You both do." He prepared a shot of antibiotics, the clear liquid gleaming in the cold light of the room. With a light hand, he injected it into Jungkook's arm. "And this," he added, producing a vial with a faintly glowing substance, "is a nanite serum. It'll speed up the healing."

You watched in silence as Hoseok administered the medication. As the serum entered Jungkook's bloodstream, you could almost see a bit of color returning to his cheeks.

You got up to leave, but Jungkook's weak voice stopped you. "Stay."

You smiled softly and carefully climbed onto the bed, mindful of the tubes. "I'm sorry," you repeated, your voice a tender murmur.

"Don't worry about me, y/n. Tomorrow I'll be good as new."

You closed your eyes, feeling your body relax next to his. The relief of being safe, knowing Taehyung was okay, and having Jungkook by your side was so strong, tears stung your eyes again. You smiled and let them fall.

Everything's going to be okay.
