Chapter 21

You bounced on the balls of your feet, feeling your stomach twist.

Stupid, y/n, real stupid! Now you won't have a safe way out.

Your heart was still pounding from finally reuniting with Taehyung. You thought of his face, bruised and tired, and shut your eyes tightly.

It's okay, he'll get out. Now I just need to avoid any more attention.

The elevator ascended silently, its lights flickering. On the ground floor, a group of people wearing tech support badges stepped in.

Spoke too soon.

One of them, a guy with a friendly smile, glanced at your badge. "Hey, you're tech support too? Haven't seen you around before."

You forced a smile, your palms sweaty. "Yeah, I'm new. First day actually. Thought I'd pull an all-nighter."

The group nodded approvingly. The elevator's metallic air mixed with the faint smell of coffee and sweat. "That's dedication," said a woman with a curly bob. "What's your name?"

"Um... Piper," you replied, using the first name that popped into your head. "Nice to meet you all."

They exchanged polite smiles, and you tried to keep your cool.

This is going great, y/n. Totally not suspicious at all.

As the elevator reached the fourth floor, you stepped out. "See you around," you called over your shoulder, praying they wouldn't follow you.

"Good luck, Piper," you heard as you hurried down the corridor.

The fluorescent lights buzzed faintly, casting a harsh glare on the polished floors. The security guard eyed you as you approached, his eyebrows raised in curiosity.

"Did you get in trouble?" he asked, noticing your flustered face.

"Ugh, total nightmare," you blurted out, your voice trembling. "This suit was asking so many questions about firewall integrity. I thought I was going to lose my job right then and there!"

The guard chuckled sympathetically. "This exec guys can be a pain. Go on in."

You offered a grateful smile and slipped back inside the control room. The door closed behind you with a soft click, and you let out a shaky breath.

I can't believe I'm pulling this off.

The room was cool, almost chilly. You moved quickly, deftly handling the small device Namjoon had given you, its weight feeling heavier with each second.

You found the right panel, unscrewed it, and connected the device to the main system. The device hummed to life, its lights blinking in a reassuring pattern.

Okay, y/n, you got this. Just a simple task. No pressure or anything.

Your earpiece crackled. "Y/n, how's it going?" Yoongi's voice was a welcome sound in the tense room.

"Well, it's going," you whispered, trying to keep your hands steady. "This thing better work because I'm about to have a heart attack."

"Just breathe, buttercup. You're almost there."

"I swear, if this thing doesn't work, I'm going to—"

"It'll work," Yoongi interrupted, chuckling. "Stop worrying."

"I can't help it! Do you know how hard it is to be undercover? They ask all these questions and I have to make up stuff on the spot. And then this guy grabs me—"

"Y/n, focus. You're rambling," Yoongi teased. "Deep breaths.  In and out. Simple."

"I'm just saying, it's no joke, you know, pretending to be calm while my insides are doing the cha-cha-cha."

"Yeah, yeah, you're a real hero," Yoongi said with mock seriousness. "Just hurry up and plant the device. We don't have all day."

"Almost done. And you know, a little more appreciation wouldn't hurt."

"You're right. You're amazing, y/n. Now shut up and finish."

You couldn't help but smile. "Alright, alright. I'm almost done."

As you finished and turned to leave, you spoke into the earpiece. "Yoongi, I think I actually—"

The door swung open suddenly. You froze.

"Shit."

You found yourself staring straight into the barrel of a gun.

The cold metal glinted under the fluorescent lights, and you could feel your blood run cold.

I'm screwed.
