Chapter 20

You typed away on the keyboard, your eyes darting over the myriad of security feeds displayed on the monitor.

Come on!

You were on borrowed time. Any moment now, OmniCorp would discover the intrusion. You had to move quickly, no time for second-guessing.

You couldn't wait for backup; you had to find Taehyung yourself.

After what felt like an eternity, your heart leapt as you finally spotted him in an interrogation room on Sub Level 4.

Oh, thank god.

Relief washed over you, but worry quickly followed. Taehyung didn't look so good. He was slumped in a chair, his unruly hair matted with sweat, covering half his face. His head lolled to one side, his body limp. He looked unconscious.

Hang in there, Tae.

You quickly erased your digital footprint from the computer terminal. You couldn't afford to leave any traces behind. With a final keystroke, you shut it down.

As you exited the room, you threw a quick line to a snoozing guard, "Just wrapping up the system check."

The guard barely acknowledged you with a nod, his eyes half-closed. You breathed a small sigh of relief, only to collide with a man in a suit. He looked you up and down, his eyes narrowing with suspicion.

"How did the check go?" the man demanded, his voice sharp and loud.

How did he know? Did the guard actually call someone to verify my story?

Not waiting for a response he barraged you with more questions. "Did you ensure the firewall integrity? What about the access logs? Were there any anomalies?"

Your mind raced desperately trying to formulate a believable response. "Uh, everything seems to be in order, but I—"

The man grabbed your forearm, pulling you along the corridor. "If you messed this up, I'm reporting you. Do you understand?" His grip was tight, his voice high pitched with agitation.

This guy is going to blow my cover. Think, y/n, think. You've got to act now or it's all over.

As you two rounded a corner, you made a quick decision. Channeling the martial arts move you had seen Jungkook perform, you twisted out of his grip and delivered a swift, precise strike to his temple. The man crumpled to the floor, knocked out cold.

"You talk too much," you muttered, rifling through his pockets for a key card. You noticed his ID badge—Jung Hoseok, tech development department.

Odd... Why is a tech developer so worked up about a security check? This doesn't add up...

You memorized his name, just in case, and rushed off, your pulse pounding in your ears. The elevator doors closed behind you, taking you down to Sub Level 4.

Your earpiece hissed to life, breaking the tense silence. "Y/n!"

"Yoongi? Is that you?" You whispered, relief flooding your voice as you pressed yourself against the elevator wall.

"Yeah, sunshine, it's me. I finally got through. What's your status?" Yoongi's voice was a lifeline.

"I found Taehyung. He's on Sub Level 4 in an interrogation room. I'm heading there now."

"Get him and get out. The maintenance truck leaves soon, and you need to be on it," Yoongi urged, his voice tight.

"I know, but I need you to restore communication with the others. We're running blind here," you insisted, your fingers tapping nervously against your leg.

"I'm working on it. Be careful, girl," Yoongi replied.

You made your way through the corridors, avoiding the patrolling guards. The tension was almost unbearable, your heart pounding with each silent step. You reached the interrogation room, took a deep breath, and hacked the lock. The door slid open with a soft hiss, and you burst inside.

Taehyung looked up, his eyes wide with surprise and relief. "Noona! You're here," he exclaimed, struggling against his restraints.

"Yoongi, I got him, he's ok," you breathed, the enormous weight lifting off your shoulders.

"Great. Now hurry!"

"I'm getting you out of here, baby brother," you said, as you freed him.

You embraced, holding onto each other for a moment longer than necessary, your reunion sinking in.

"We need to move, now," you urged, leading Taehyung towards the loading dock. Then you abruptly stopped.

Shit.

You had completely forgotten about the device Namjoon had instructed you to plant.

"Taehyung, listen to me. You need to find the white maintenance truck by the loading dock on Sub Level 1 and hide in the back."

Taehyung's eyes widened with fear. "What about you?" his voice quivered.

"I have to go back. There's a device I need to plant. It could be our only chance to bring down OmniCorp," you explained, trying to mask your own fear with determination.

Yoongi's voice crackled in your ear, "Y/n, this is insane! You won't have time to make it back before the truck leaves."

"We might not get another opportunity like this. People's freedom is more important than my life," you argued. You knew the risks, but this was bigger than you.

Taehyung clung to your hand, his eyes pleading. "No, noona, don't go," he begged, his voice breaking.

You hugged him tightly, fighting back tears. "I have to. Now go!" You pushed him away and jumped into the elevator, the doors closing between you. Your heart ached, but you had to stay strong.

As the elevator ascended, you steadied yourself.

I can do this. I have to. For Taehyung. For everyone.
