twenty-four: sister sister
twenty-four: sister sister
"Mum really wishes you'd come, H. You know how important New Years is to her and to Dad... and they haven't seen you in months... They miss you, I miss you." Gemma says on the other end of the phone early the next morning, so early that I was still half asleep. Her call had woken me up from a rather blissful sleep with Niall against my chest, forcing me out of the bed so I wouldn't wake him as I talked to her. It was just past six-thirty, Niall and I hadn't even gone to bed till three.
"I get that, Gem. I understand that they miss me but the idea of being stuck in a room filled with people I hate just doesn't exactly appeal to me. Just tell them I had to work or something, I'm sure they'll understand." I said quietly, glancing towards the hallway as I hear the sound of one of the doors opening but no one comes out of either room.
"H, I know this year has been hard on you and I've been understanding of it because I can't even begin to imagine what you went through... but this is about more than just you, so I'm not going to lie for you this time. You either tell Mum and Dad yourself, or you can come to the party. I'm not asking you to stay till midnight, just make an appearance, say hello." Gemma argues on the other end, earning a sigh from me.
"They blame me, Gemma." I whispered, biting down on my lip for a second as Gemma lets out a sigh of her own on the other end.
"I know they do, H... but they won't ever know the real story if you keep avoiding them. Just come home for one day, H. Bring Liam if you have to... Just stop hiding" Gemma says and I hate the fact that now I felt guilty. Gemma always had a way of doing that, she did it for the best though and I knew she was right. I catch a glimpse of Niall walking down the hallway now, my heart fluttering just a little at how adorable he looked in the sweater he'd borrowed from me. It was too big for him, the sleeves going over his hands and the end of it hanging over his mid-thigh.
"I'll think about it, Gemma... I gotta go though, so I'll talk to you more about it later..." I said, smiling softly at Niall who's made it into the kitchen now and is already latching himself to my side. Niall was always cuddly, especially when he was still tired.
"Okay... I love you, Harry." Gemma says, the tone of her voice letting me know that she was most definitely going to keep me to my word about talking later.
"I love you too, Gem." And with that I hung up, wrapping both my arms around Niall and placing a soft kiss to the top of his head. He lets out a content sigh at that, nuzzling further into my side before he yawns.
"Who was that?" He asked, his voice still a little hoarse due to the fact he'd just woken up.
"My sister. What are you doing up anyways? It's not even seven yet." I asked, changing the subject because I didn't want to talk about what Gemma called me for.
"Bed was cold, you should really invest in heavier blankets." Niall mumbles and I let out a soft chuckle as I shake my head.
"There's a whole bunch in the closet, babe."
"Couldn't reach them, besides you're instant warmth... those take a while." Niall's voice is still quiet and I can tell he's about to fall back asleep standing up. I fight back to quip about his height, knowing that it wouldn't be well received with how tired we both were.
"Let's head back to bed, are you working today?" I asked, slowly moving with Niall out of the kitchen.
"Working the night shift, don't need to leave till four." Niall whispers, keeping his face buried in my side as we walk towards my room. It takes a few minutes to reach the bedroom, both of us collapsing back onto the bed and Niall's head is back to it's rightful place on my chest. He's already back to sleep, but me... I was wide awake.
The idea of going back home, even for a day was enough to make my anxiety skyrocket. Home was such a foreign concept for me, the place tainted with so many different memories that I knew for a fact would haunt me for quiet some time.
But as I looked down at Niall, fast asleep on my chest without a care in the world, I couldn't help but think about all the new memories we could make there, together. That is if he would even be willing to go... New Years Eve was what couples celebrated and we weren't a couple yet... We had only established that we were dating and that had been enough at the time... but New Years was a big thing and I didn't want him to feel any pressure by inviting him to a party that would have my entire family in attendance. It wouldn't hurt to ask though... maybe he'd want to go.
I could take my princess to an actual ball, that was one hell of an idea....
