TWENTY-THREE

Months had gone by. It was now January and Marvello was still no where to be found. It perplexed even the greatest wizards and witches, wondering how a man could disappear without a trace like Marvello did. Even his father had left some kind of trail. There was absolutely nothing that even gave them a hint as to where Marvello could be hiding.

That was until one night when Fred Weasley was working late at the shop, alone. Elle has taken the kids home to get them to bed. George was at dinner with Callie and Teddy, leaving Fred to be the only one working. Fred didn't realize the time, as he was so wrapped up in what he was working on.

Diagon Alley was seemingly deserted. Everyone was either in bed or at the Leaky Cauldron, getting drunk on fire whiskey. And so no one noticed five men in black cloaks sneak into Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes around midnight on January the fifth.

Fred was so engrossed in the product design he was working on that he didn't notice the men until it was too late. One of the men hesitated when he seen the pictures on Fred's desk; a picture of him, Elle, and the kids taken just last summer, one of him and Elle when they were young. They were sitting on the couch at the Burrow, well actually Elle was on Fred's lap, bent over laughing as Fred was tickling her. It was both Fred and Elle's favorite picture of them together. The last picture was the most recent one taken of the Weasley clan, taken the last Christmas. The kids had tried to spell out inappropriate words with their Weasley sweaters, but Molly quickly put an end to that.

The man looked to Marvello and then snapped out of it. He grabbed the back of Fred's shirt, spinning him around in his chair.

Fred was not one to cower in fear. He reached for his wand, which was sitting in the chair beside his leg. He quickly sent a curse to the nearest Death Eater, sending him flying into the shelves, unconscious.

One of the men tried to come at Fred from behind, but Fred quickly reared his elbow back,  hitting the man in the gut. While the man had crouched, holding his stomach, Fred hit the man's head, making him black out as well.

"Enough!" The cold voice of Marvello finally spoke. He was standing off to the back, watching as his men tried to take down the tall red-headed man.

"Surrender now, Weasley, and I'll make your death a bit less painful," he hissed, sounding rather like a snake.

Fred sneered. He was not going to go down without a fight. He had to get home to Elle and the kids. He couldn't have survived a coma, only to die at the hands of a man who just wanted to copy his father.

He needed to have his forever with Elle. He had to. He needed to be there to walk Reese and Josie down the aisle.

"Never." Before Marvello could say anything else, he continued, "Why do this, Marvello? Why are you out to get us? Sure, we may have killed your father, but let's face it, Marvello. He didn't give you love. You were groomed from the day you were born to ruin lives. You can stop that, Marvello. You can change." Fred figured if he distracted him long enough, then he could take the other two men down.

He used wordless, wandless magic to cut off their breathing just long enough for them to fall unconscious.

When the two men fell, Marvello hissed. "You stupid man! I gave you the chance to ask for mercy, and you ignored it!" He paused, stepping closer to Fred. "You will be begging me to die. You were meant to die at the Battle of Hogwarts. Instead, you'll die tonight," he growled, looking Fred in the eyes.

Fred gulped. "I will see my family again."

"Yes, you will. Whenever they come up to meet you in heaven."

And so Fred Weasley thought of his family as he lunged at Marvello. He grunted when Marvello stabbed him, sending him down on his knees.

And like he was never there, Marvello and his four men were gone. Using what remaining strength he had, Fred sent a patronus to Elle and the kids. "Elle... I love you. I always have and I always will. You and the kids are my world. Tell them that I'll always be with them. I love you all," his voice cracked.

And to George, he sent one saying, "Georgie, Stay strong. Love you, Forge."
