007. morning star

"Ready to sign?" Camille asked a few minutes later, walking up to Simon with the Writ in her hand. "Take us to the apartment, give us the book, then you can have your pardon." Simon ordered. Camille looked at Clary, Madi and Alec, annoyed before she sarcastically smiled. "I wouldn't have it any other way."

"Good."

☠︎︎

Camille lead Magnus, Malia, Alec, Izzy, Madi, Clary and Simon into her apartment as Simon whispered to Clary, "I thought the underground parking was nice."

They entered the study as Alec blurted, "Wow. You've got a lot of books." Camille just shrugged, "I've got a lot of time on my hands."

Simon and Clary started checking out books one by one, whilst Malia was flinging them out of the shelves with her magic and checking the titles before letting the books all drop to the floor. "Oops." The Bane said sarcastically, feeling Camille's eyes on her.

"This place creeps me out." Izzy spoke up. "Yeah. Let's check the perimeter." Alec suggested, looking to Izzy, Madi and then Magnus. "Good idea. If I know Camille, she'll have a trick or three up her sleeve." Magnus confessed.

With that, Madi, Izzy, Alec, and Magnus leave.

"I still don't get it. Why do you have this place if you live at Hotel DuMort?" Clary asked Camille. "The DuMort has too many rules. Think of it like Gracie Mansion. It's the official residence, but it doesn't mean I have to live there. This place gives me the freedom to indulge in certain... proclivities." Camille declared as she grabbed a feather to write with from her desk and went to Simon.

"You know, the mayor has the same problem." Simon piped up before Camille pricked Simon to get his blood.

"Ow! Hey!"

"Come with me." Camille insisted, as they go over to the desk and Camille has grabbed the Writ. "On the dotted line." Simon took the feather from Camille, and then looked at Clary and Malia. He then signed it.

Once taking the Writ, Camille gave it to her butler. "Thank you." She said.

"He did what you asked. Now give us the Book of the White." Malia ordered, taking a step towards Camille. "I'd love to... but I can't. I have no idea where it is." The vampire insisted. "Dot gave it to you!" Clary growled. "I'm sure it's here somewhere. But if the idea was to hide it, telling me would defeat the purpose. Dot must have put it somewhere when I wasn't looking." Camille shrugged.

"So we have to search the whole apartment?" Clary asked. "See? That's the spirit. Although, I'd start now. I've got four more rooms just like this one." Camille said before she left the room.

"Have I told you guys that I hate her?" Malia asked, gritting her teeth as she searched through more titles, using her magic. "No." Simon answered, sarcastically.

"I wish my mom had left us something. Some sort of clue." Clary trailed off. "Maybe she did. Did she ever say anything about a book?" Malia asked. "I don't think so. And if she did, she erased my memory of anything to do with the Shadow world." Clary replied, still searching.

"Well, there's gotta be something. Maybe the clue has something to do with color, you know?" Simon spoke as Clary was looking at a familiar book, wedged in the shelf.

"Clary, that's a cookbook." Simon noted as Clary had taken the book from the shelf. "I've seen this before. Chicken cacciatore, remember? My mom used to make it all the time." Clary replied, placing the book on the desk to go through it. Clary started flipping through the pages, as Malia and Simon joined her at the desk.

"How could I forget? Even better the next day. The gift that keeps on giving." Simon says dreamily as Clary is at the recipe and there's a bookmark on the page.

"Maybe more than you realized." Malia confessed as Clary took the other end of the bookmark out of her pocket and held it to the one in the cookbook. They melted together and the book transformed into the Book of the White.

"This is it." Clary boomed, excitedly. Malia turned to Clary, a smile on her face. "You did it!" The Bane cheered.

Out of excitement, Clary threw her arms around Malia and hugged her. Malia blinked in surprise, before she awkwardly hugged the Fray girl back, not being used to this kind of affection.

Suddenly, Izzy appeared. "We gotta go. He's here." She spoke fast as Malia asked, "Where's Magnus?"

Isabelle swallowed thickly, "They've got him.. as well as Alec and Madi. Cmon— we need to go!"

With that, the group left, as Clary clutched the book in her arms.

☠︎︎

"Clarissa. So good to see you again." Valentine begun, eyeing his daughter as Malia frowned, quickly stepping in front of Clary and Izzy. "Where's your brother?" Valentine asked his daughter. "You think I'd tell you?" Clary snapped as Valentine took a step towards the trio. "You won't have to."

Jumping in front of Clary, Malia and Izzy, Simon almost attacked Valentine. "Stay away from them!" He hissed, as Valentine pushed Simon away easily. "Simon!" Isabelle called out in fear as Valentine was about to strike Simon with his blade.

Izzy wrapped her whip around Valentine's wrist but he pulled on it, causing Izzy to fall to the ground. Valentine went to strike Simon but suddenly his hand was trapped in place, by Malia's magic.

He turned to the warlock, who had piercing yellow eyes. "Hands off." She hissed, before throwing Valentine across the room with her magic.

Valentine's men quickly grabbed Simon and Izzy, holding blades to their throats. "One more move warlock, and I'll have your friends heads." Valentine ordered, getting to his feet. Clary's eyes widened in fear for a moment, and Malia noticed this. With the blink of an eye, her warlock mark was hidden again as her brown eyes were visible.

Suddenly, a man grabbed ahold of Malia now, restraining her. She felt a cold blade against her neck and knew she could have easily moved it away from her body with magic.. but Valentine would easily have Clary and Magnus' friends executed.

"Stop! This time you're not getting away." Jace yelled, suddenly running into the room. Valentine turned to face Jace, "Finally ready to kill your own father?" He asked to which Jace responded with, "You abandoned me."

"I was protecting you. You weren't ready then, but you've grown. You've become the warrior I've trained you to be." Valentine insisted as Jace replied, "You trained me well."

"And yet, I still have so much to teach you. I brought you here for a reason. Look, fight me, and watch your friends die." Valentine insisted as more men came in, holding Alec, Magnus and Madi captive.

"See, you are strong, but they make you weak."

"Let us go. You can have the book. We won't be able to stop you without it." Clary insisted as Valentine turned to face his daughter. "Ah, Clarissa. So like your mother. Willing to do anything for those that you love. I'm touched, but... the book was never part of my plan. I want you to wake up your mother. I know that you'll both join me eventually. It's fated." He said as Clary looked disgusted.

Valentine turned around to Jace, "You ready?" He asked. Jace looked at his friends and back at Valentine before he lowered his blade. "If I go with you, promise me you won't hurt them." Jace said as Valentine nodded. "You have my word."

"This is insane!" Clary blurted out. "I'm sorry, Clary." Jace responded. "Jace, what are you doing? You can't be serious!" Madi managed to call out, catching his attention. "Valentine is wrong. You're not like him. You're not!" Jace shook his head, "You don't know that, Madi. You don't know that."

"But I do, Jace. We've trained and fought together side by side for years! I know that the boy I have fallen completely in love with, is absolutely nothing like that absolute monster!" Madi cried out, as Jace looked at her in awe.. more surprise than anything. He didn't even know what to say, but he took a moment to process her words.

"Let them go." Valentine said, as his men let go of the group members they'd held captive. Malia quickly went to Clary's side. "Malia." Clary blurted, in relief.

Izzy and Alec both wanted to go to Jace but he wield his blade towards them. "Get back, get back."

As this happened, Valentine opened a portal.

"Jace!" Madi called out, approaching him as Valentine's men went through the portal. "Please, stay." She pleaded, as he held his blade up, trying to keep her back. "I'm sorry Madeline." Jace managed to say, before Valentine took him by his arm and they go through the portal.

Madi suddenly raced towards the portal, but found herself frozen in place suddenly. The portal closed, and this force on the Lightwood was released

She turned to face Malia, who'd used magic on her. "What are you doing?!" She asked, furiously. "Saving your life, Lightwood. If you enter a Portal not knowing where you're going, you'll be stuck in limbo forever." Malia responded.

Madi felt tears pool in her eyes, and quickly Izzy rushed forward to embrace her, as the smaller girl sobbed.

Malia turned to Clary, finding her fixated on a spot on the floor, as she seemed lost in thought. The Fray's eyes filled were tears, Malia stepped forward. "Hey.." She said softly, as Clary just about fell into her arms, and cried.
